How we researched this guide
We compared 6 compact winches suited to small trucks and light rigs, checking 12 maker documents and manuals: WARN’s AXON spec sheet and powersports lineup page, Can-Am’s factory VRX 45-S listing, Superwinch’s Winch2Go technical data guide, SuperATV’s Black Ops 4500 page and sizing atlas, Champion’s 4500-kit manual, X-BULL’s warranty terms, and published GVWR figures for the Jimny, Maverick and Santa Cruz. Every spec here comes from those documents — nothing was tested, and conflicts are printed as conflicts, not resolved silently.
Owner evidence comes from MotoIQ’s hands-on Winch2Go test, ATV.com’s AXON platform review, forum threads on X-BULL (brand-level, labelled as such), and aggregate owner feedback on the Black Ops 4500. Coverage is thin for the VRX 45-S, the AXON 45-S and the Champion 4500 — each review says so rather than inventing praise.
The 30-second answer
Six compact winches for small trucks: WARN VRX 45-S, WARN AXON 45-S, X-BULL 4500, Superwinch Winch2Go 4000, Champion 4500-lb Wireless Winch Kit, SuperATV Black Ops 4500. The WARN VRX 45-S is the best all-round sealed compact winch; the WARN AXON 45-S is the premium Motactor build; the X-BULL 4500 is the lowest buy-in with a complete kit; the Superwinch Winch2Go 4000 is the portable no-mount answer; the Champion 4500 kit is the best value with wireless control; and the SuperATV Black Ops 4500 is the SxS crossover. All six suit rigs loaded to about 3,000 lb — heavier small trucks need the full-size class.
Top Pick
WARN VRX 45-S
4,500 lb of WARN pulling power with IP68 sealing and synthetic rope, on the 3.0 x 6.59 in bolt pattern most small-truck bumper plates already fit — the compact winch we would bolt to a light rig first.
Best Premium
WARN AXON 45-S
WARN's Motactor packs motor and contactor into one sealed unit, the Rockerbar digital switch and corded remote report load and temperature, and IP68 sealing plus stainless fasteners shrug off corrosion — the no-compromise compact winch.
Best Budget
X-BULL 4500
A complete 4,500-lb synthetic-rope kit — wireless and wired remotes, aluminum hawse, mounting plate in the box — for the lowest buy-in of any sealed winch here. The honest budget pick if you accept a 1-year warranty and IP66 sealing.
Best Portable
Superwinch Winch2Go 4000
A 4,000-lb winch in a toolbox with a snatch block, straps, shackles, gloves and quick-connect leads — the grab-and-go answer for small trucks with no bumper plate and no permanent mount.
Best Value Kit
Champion 4500-lb Wireless Winch Kit
4,500 lb, a wireless remote plus a handlebar mini-rocker, and a mounting channel in the box — the cheapest way to put a name-brand winch with real warranty support on a light rig.
Best for SxS Crossover
SuperATV Black Ops 4500
A 4,500-lb sealed winch with a waterproof solenoid, wireless plus two rocker switches, and 50 ft of synthetic rope — the crossover pick for small trucks that share garage space with a side-by-side.

Small-truck winch size finder
Enter your truck’s LOADED weight — curb weight plus people, gear and cargo. We multiply by 1.5, the industry sizing rule. Every answer leads to one of this guide’s six winches or to our full-size truck winch guide if the compact class is undersized for you. Never size down.
How to choose a winch for a small truck
Line pull vs your truck’s loaded weight
Size by loaded weight — curb weight plus people, gear and cargo — multiplied by 1.5. The 4,000–4,500 lb winches here suit rigs loaded to about 2,600–3,000 lb. A compact pickup at working weight usually lands far above that, so weigh your actual rig first. The size finder above does the math.
Synthetic rope vs steel cable
Synthetic rope is lighter, safer if it breaks, and easier on the hands — the right default for mixed use. Steel cable resists abrasion and UV better but demands gloves and careful spooling. Re-spool under load after every use, and our best synthetic winch rope replacement guide covers what to buy at the first sign of fraying or heat glazing.
Bumper, plate and bolt-pattern fitment
Compact winches do not share one bolt pattern: WARN uses 3.0 x 6.59 in here, X-BULL uses 3.0 x 4.8 in, Black Ops uses 3.0 x 6.6 in, and Champion uses 4.9 x 3 in. Match the winch to your bumper plate before ordering — adapters add failure points. Unibody trucks like the Maverick and Santa Cruz need hidden winch mounts on the bumper beam.
Sensors, cameras and driver aids
Modern small trucks hide radar, parking sensors and cameras behind the bumper cover exactly where a winch plate wants to live. Relocating or blocking a sensor can disable adaptive cruise or emergency braking. Check your owner’s manual for sensor locations before cutting.
Nose weight and payload
Winches here run 17 lb (VRX 45-S) to about 43 lb all-in (Winch2Go), plus plate and wiring. It all sits ahead of the front axle, where it affects steering feel most — count the winch, plate, rope and recovery gear together in your payload math.
Battery and alternator capacity
Compact winches still pull serious current: 208 A (AXON 45-S) to 280 A (Champion) at full load. Your battery must be healthy and the engine should be running during hard pulls. Keep terminals clean and use the cable gauge the maker specifies.
Small-truck GVWR and the 1.5x rule
The table below applies the 1.5x sizing rule to real published GVWR figures. The takeaway is blunt: most modern small pickups need the full-size winch class at working weight. The compact winches in this guide are for rigs that genuinely stay light — Jimny-class vehicles, older compact pickups run light, and side-by-sides. For quads and UTVs rather than trucks, our best 4,500-lb winch for ATV/UTV guide covers the same weight class tuned for those machines, and our best ATV winch guide covers quad-duty machines.
| Vehicle | GVWR | 1.5x pull needed | Compact-class fit | Source |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Suzuki Jimny 1.5L 5MT (2019+) | 3,163 lb | 4,745 lb | Marginal — fits when lightly loaded | Owner manual |
| Ford Maverick 2.5L Hybrid FWD (2022) | 5,200 lb | 7,800 lb | Full-size class | Autoweb |
| Hyundai Santa Cruz 2.5L SE FWD (2022) | 5,610 lb | 8,415 lb | Full-size class | TowingCap |
Compact winches by budget
What the money buys in the compact class — every tier below is a pick from this guide, and none of them carries a price in this article per site rules. For wallet-friendly options beyond the compact class, see our best budget winch for truck guide. If price is the deciding factor across every winch class, our best cheap winch guide ranks the value end of the whole market.
| Tier | What you get | Example pick |
|---|---|---|
| Tight budget | 4,500 lb pull, IP66 sealing, wireless + wired remotes, plate in the box | X-BULL 4500 — Best Budget |
| Mid-range value | 4,500 lb pull, wireless + mini-rocker, mounting channel in the box | Champion 4500 — Best Value Kit |
| No permanent mount | 4,000 lb portable kit with block, straps, shackles and gloves | Winch2Go 4000 — Best Portable |
| Premium | 4,500 lb pull, IP68, integrated motor/contactor, digital load feedback | AXON 45-S — Best Premium |
Synthetic rope vs steel cable for small trucks
Five of the six winches here ship with synthetic rope; the Champion 4500’s pinned listing maps to steel cable, with a synthetic variant in Champion’s current lineup. Choose by how you will actually use the truck.
| Rope type | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Synthetic rope | Light, safe if it breaks, easy on hands, floats | UV and abrasion wear; needs washing and inspection | Daily-driven small trucks and mixed trail use |
| Steel cable | Abrasion-resistant, UV-proof, cheaper to replace | Heavy, kinks, stores energy — dangerous if it snaps; needs gloves | Work rigs and abrasive rocky terrain |
Detailed reviews: 6 compact winches for small trucks
Six winches, one weight class — 4,000 to 4,500 lb — with very different ideas about sealing, controls and value. Each review covers its award, maker-published specs, fitment, owner reports and watch-outs.
Top Pick: WARN VRX 45-S
Top Pick
Why the WARN VRX 45-S is our pick
The VRX 45-S is the compact-class benchmark: 4,500 lb through a 198:1 three-stage planetary, IP68 sealing, and WARN's limited lifetime mechanical plus 3-year electrical warranty. It ships with 50 ft of synthetic rope on a cast aluminum hawse, and at 17.0 lb it is the lightest sealed winch here.
WARN VRX 45-S key specs
- Part number: 101040
- Rated line pull: 4,500 lb (2,041 kg), single line
- Motor: 12V DC permanent magnet (hp not published)
- Gear ratio: 198:1, 3-stage planetary
- Rope: Synthetic, 1/4 in x 50 ft
- Fairlead: Cast aluminum hawse
- Sealing: IP68 waterproof
- Bolt pattern: 3.0 x 6.59 in
- Weight: 17.0 lb
- Controls: Dash rocker + corded remote
- Warranty: Limited lifetime mechanical / 3-year electrical
WARN VRX 45-S: fits and best for
Fits bumper plates and ATV/UTV mounts on the 3.0 x 6.59 in pattern — the most common compact footprint, also used on Can-Am's factory VRX 45-S kits. Best for Jimny-class rigs and light compact pickups loaded under 3,000 lb.
WARN VRX 45-S: pros and watch-outs
- IP68 sealing — genuinely submersible per WARN
- Lightest sealed winch here at 17.0 lb
- Synthetic rope + aluminum hawse included — no cable swap needed
- Lifetime mechanical / 3-year electrical warranty is the class best
- Standard 3.0 x 6.59 in pattern fits most existing plates
- Costs more than the budget picks in this guide
- Corded remote only — no wireless in the box
- Motor horsepower not published by WARN
- 50 ft rope is short for long pulls — carry an extension strap
WARN VRX 45-S: what owners report
Owner coverage specific to the VRX 45-S is thin in the forums we checked. Can-Am's factory VRX 45-S listing carries owner fitment discussion, and a Rocky Mountain ATV/MC verified buyer reports the VRX 45 steel sibling installing as planned. (Can-Am — WARN VRX 45-S winch (OEM listing))
WARN VRX 45-S: who should not buy
Skip it if wireless control is a must-have — the digital remote on the AXON 45-S is the upgrade, and the Champion kit gives you wireless on a budget. WARN AXON 45-S.
WARN VRX 45-S: pair it with
Pair it with WARN's fitted winch cover (part 91414) to keep UV and grit off the synthetic rope between trips: Check Price (WARN winch cover 91414)

Best Premium: WARN AXON 45-S
Best Premium
Why the WARN AXON 45-S is our pick
The AXON 45-S is WARN's flagship compact winch. The Motactor integrates motor and contactor into one IP68-sealed unit — faster to install, with no separate solenoid box to corrode. It is rated at 4,500 lb through 239:1 gears, and the digital corded remote reports load and temperature. Warranty is the class best: limited lifetime mechanical, 3-year electrical.
WARN AXON 45-S key specs
- Part number: 101140
- Rated line pull: 4,500 lb (2,041 kg), single line
- Motor: Motactor 12V DC permanent magnet, motor + contactor integrated (hp not published)
- Gear ratio: 239:1, 3-stage planetary
- Rope: Spydura synthetic, 1/4 in x 50 ft
- Fairlead: Epic hawse
- Sealing: IP68 waterproof
- Controls: Rockerbar digital switch + digital corded remote (load/temp feedback)
- Construction: One-piece tie plate, all-metal
- Fasteners: All stainless steel
- Warranty: Limited lifetime mechanical / 3-year electrical
WARN AXON 45-S: fits and best for
Best for owners who want the most refined compact winch — light rigs used hard in wet, salty or muddy conditions. Check the AXON's footprint against your mount first: its Motactor body differs from the VRX bolt pattern.
WARN AXON 45-S: pros and watch-outs
- Motactor integration — fastest install, no separate contactor to corrode
- IP68 sealing plus a 400+ hour salt-spray corrosion rating (WARN)
- Digital remote with load and temperature feedback
- Lifetime mechanical / 3-year electrical warranty
- All-metal tie-plate construction with stainless fasteners
- Premium pricing for the compact class
- Weight not published — a watch-out for payload counters
- Mount footprint differs from VRX — verify plate fitment
- 50 ft rope is short for long pulls
WARN AXON 45-S: what owners report
Owner coverage for the AXON 45-S itself is thin — we say so rather than padding it. ATV.com's review of the AXON 45RC (the same winch on a short drum) praises the IP68 sealing and Motactor design and recommends the 45S for the extra rope. (ATV.com — WARN AXON 45RC winch review)
WARN AXON 45-S: who should not buy
Skip it if the budget is tight — the VRX 45-S gives you WARN's IP68 sealing and the same warranty for less. Read the top pick: WARN VRX 45-S.
WARN AXON 45-S: pair it with

Tip: The AXON's load limiter trips when you exceed capacity — treat it as a re-rig signal. Our sizing guide explains the 1.5x rule: what size winch for a truck.
Best Budget: X-BULL 4500
Best Budget
Why the X-BULL 4500 is our pick
The X-BULL 4500 is the value play: a 1.5 HP permanent-magnet motor with 136:1 gears for a 4,500-lb rating, and the box includes synthetic 1/4 x 50 ft rope, an aluminum hawse, wireless AND wired remotes, and a mounting plate. Sealing is IP66 — dust and heavy spray, not submersion — and the 1-year warranty names the motor, solenoids and rope as consumables.
X-BULL 4500 key specs
- MPN: AM0004
- Rated line pull: 4,500 lb (2,041 kg), single line
- Motor: 1.5 HP 12V DC permanent magnet
- Gear ratio: 136:1, 3-stage planetary
- Rope: Synthetic, 1/4 in x 50 ft (3.2 ft protective sleeve)
- Fairlead: Aluminum hawse
- Sealing: IP66
- Bolt pattern: 3.0 x 4.8 in
- Controls: Wireless + wired remotes (maker box list)
- Weight: 21.60 lb (maker; Amazon lists 21.1 lb)
- Warranty: 1 year (motor, solenoids, cables, ropes named as consumables)
X-BULL 4500: fits and best for
Fits ATV/UTV and small-truck mounts on the 3.0 x 4.8 in pattern, and the included mounting plate covers many applications — but measure first: the maker's bolt-pattern figure conflicts with a stray Amazon bullet. Best for budget-minded owners of light rigs who winch occasionally.
X-BULL 4500: pros and watch-outs
- Most complete kit for the money — plate and both remotes included
- Synthetic rope + aluminum hawse in the box
- 1.5 HP motor is honest for the 4,500-lb rating
- Wireless remote with 82 ft range (Amazon feature bullet)
- 3.2 ft rope protection sleeve included
- IP66, not IP68 — not for submersion
- 1-year warranty with motor, solenoid and rope named as consumables
- Owner record is thin and includes a corrosion/warranty complaint on a larger X-Bull
- Bolt-pattern and remote-count conflicts on the listing — verify on arrival
X-BULL 4500: what owners report
Forum owner coverage specific to the 4500 is thin. A Jeep Gladiator Forum thread on a larger X-Bull (not the 4500) reports clutch-hardware corrosion and a poor warranty experience — brand-level colour. An independent review of the truck-size line is here: (OverlandSite — X-Bull winch review (truck-size model))
X-BULL 4500: who should not buy
Skip it if you winch in deep water or mud regularly — IP66 is not IP68, and the warranty carve-outs are real. The VRX 45-S is the sealed upgrade: WARN VRX 45-S.
X-BULL 4500: pair it with

Best Portable: Superwinch Winch2Go 4000
Best Portable
Why the Superwinch Winch2Go 4000 is our pick
The Winch2Go is the only pick here that needs no mount: a 4,000-lb Superwinch in a portable toolbox, with an included pulley block that doubles the pull to 8,000 lb for the rare heavy recovery. Superwinch's data lists a 1.4 HP motor, 166:1 gearing and a sealed handheld rocker; the kit packs three shackles, two straps, gloves and 10 ft quick-connect leads. About 43 lb all-in.
Superwinch Winch2Go 4000 key specs
- Part number: 1140232
- Rated line pull: 4,000 lb single line (8,000 lb double-line with included pulley block)
- Motor: 1.4 HP (1.0 kW) 12V DC permanent magnet
- Gear ratio: 166:1
- Rope: Synthetic — 7/32 in x 47 ft (Amazon title) vs 3/16 in x 50 ft (Superwinch sheets)
- Fairlead: Hawse fairlead in baseplate
- Controls: Sealed handheld rocker switch
- Weight: About 43 lb all-in (wire) / 41 lb (synthetic)
- Kit includes: 3 shackles, 2 straps, pulley block, gloves, 10 ft quick-connect leads
- Warranty: 2-year limited
Superwinch Winch2Go 4000: fits and best for
Fits any small truck with a 12V battery and an anchor point — no bumper, plate or drilling required, which makes it the answer for unibody trucks and leased vehicles. Best for owners who need recovery capability a few times a year. Note: 4,000 lb single-line covers rigs loaded to about 2,666 lb — double-line anything heavier.
Superwinch Winch2Go 4000: pros and watch-outs
- No permanent mount — works on any 12V vehicle
- Complete kit: block, straps, shackles, gloves included
- Double-line rigging reaches 8,000 lb when needed
- Sealed handheld rocker — simple and glove-friendly
- 2-year Superwinch warranty
- Heaviest option here at about 43 lb all-in
- Rope spec conflict (7/32×47 vs 3/16×50) — confirm on arrival
- Line spools unevenly on off-centre pulls (MotoIQ)
- Toolbox format is bulky to store in a small bed
Superwinch Winch2Go 4000: what owners report
MotoIQ's hands-on Winch2Go test — a one-person race team loading a car onto a trailer — calls the kit complete and practical, and notes uneven spooling on off-centre pulls. Broader owner coverage is thin. (MotoIQ — tested: Superwinch Winch2Go portable winch)
Superwinch Winch2Go 4000: who should not buy
Skip it if you winch monthly — a permanent mount is faster and safer for frequent use. The VRX 45-S is the fit-and-forget answer: WARN VRX 45-S.
Superwinch Winch2Go 4000: pair it with

Best Value Kit: Champion 4500-lb Wireless Winch Kit
Best Value Kit
Why the Champion 4500-lb Wireless Winch Kit is our pick
Champion's 4500-lb kit is the value benchmark: a 1.6 HP motor and 180:1 gears for the full 4,500-lb rating, with a wireless remote, mini-rocker switch and mounting channel in the box. The manual's performance table is unusually honest: 280 A and 4.6 fpm at full load, one minute maximum at rated load with five minutes cooling. 2-year limited warranty with US support.
Champion 4500-lb Wireless Winch Kit key specs
- Model: 14560

- Brake: Automatic drum brake
- Mounting channel: Included in the box

Champion 4500-lb Wireless Winch Kit: fits and best for
Fits the standard small-winch 4.9 x 3 in bolt pattern and includes its own mounting channel — the easiest install here for a first-time owner. Best for light-duty use on rigs loaded under 3,000 lb. No IP rating is published, so keep it dry.
Champion 4500-lb Wireless Winch Kit: pros and watch-outs
- Wireless remote + mini-rocker included — best control set for the money
- Mounting channel in the box
- Honest manual: published amp, speed and duty figures
- 2-year warranty with real US support
- 180:1 gearing is the tallest here — strong holding power
- No IP rating published — keep it dry
- 38 ft rope is the shortest here — plan on an extension strap
- Steel cable needs gloves and care (synthetic variant exists — confirm which ships)
- 1-minute maximum at rated load per the manual
Champion 4500-lb Wireless Winch Kit: what owners report
Dedicated forum owner coverage for the 4500 kit is thin — we say so rather than inventing praise. Champion's own instruction manual is the most detailed document available, including the full performance table: (Champion 4500-lb winch instruction manual)
Champion 4500-lb Wireless Winch Kit: who should not buy

Best for SxS Crossover: SuperATV Black Ops 4500
Best for SxS Crossover
Why the SuperATV Black Ops 4500 is our pick
The Black Ops 4500 is the SxS world's answer to the small-truck question: a sealed 4,500-lb winch with a waterproof solenoid, water-resistant wireless receiver, and three controls — wireless, dash rocker, handlebar rocker — in the box. SuperATV rates the 1.3 HP motor through 166:1 gears with 50 ft of synthetic rope on an aluminum hawse.
SuperATV Black Ops 4500 key specs
- Rated line pull: 4,500 lb (2,041 kg), single line
- Motor: 1.3 HP 12V DC permanent magnet
- Gear ratio: 166:1
- Rope: Synthetic, 50 ft
- Fairlead: Aluminum hawse
- Sealing: Sealed — no IP number published
- Solenoid: Waterproof; water-resistant wireless receiver
- Controls: Wireless + dash rocker + handlebar rocker
- Bolt pattern: 3.0 x 6.6 in
- In the box: Hook kit, pull strap, rope stopper, hardware
- Weight: Not published
- Warranty: 1 year
SuperATV Black Ops 4500: fits and best for
Fits mounts on the 3.0 x 6.6 in pattern — verify against your truck's plate, since this footprint is wider than the WARN compact pattern and the winch ships without a vehicle-specific plate. Best for owners who already run SuperATV gear on a SxS.
SuperATV Black Ops 4500: pros and watch-outs
- Three control options in the box — the most here
- Waterproof solenoid + water-resistant receiver
- 50 ft synthetic rope with hook kit and strap included
- Sealed against mud and water
- SuperATV's install support line is a real help resource
- No IP number published — sealed is the whole claim
- 3.0 x 6.6 in pattern — check your plate, wider than WARN's
- Weight not published
- 1-year warranty is the class minimum

Installation & wiring basics
A compact winch install is a weekend driveway job, but the details matter more on a small truck than a full-size one. Bolt the winch to a plate or bumper mount rated for at least the winch’s pull, using SAE grade 5 or better hardware torqued to the mount maker’s spec — the winch is only as strong as what it is bolted to. Route the battery cables away from heat and sharp edges, fuse or breaker-protect the positive lead near the battery, and keep every connection clean and tight: most winch failures we see in manuals trace to voltage drop at a corroded terminal, not to the winch itself. All six picks here are 12V electric winches; for the wider field, see our best electric winch for truck guide.
Before the first real pull, spool the rope onto the drum under load — at least 10% of rated pull — so it lays evenly. An uneven first spool causes the binding that shortens rope life. If your truck is a unibody (Maverick, Santa Cruz) or sensor-dense behind the bumper, get a professional to handle the mount — or run the portable pick. A receiver-hitch winch mount is the other no-drill answer for trucks whose bumpers cannot take a plate. Step-by-step: how to install a winch on a truck, how to mount a winch on a truck, and how to wire a winch to a truck battery. winch mounting plates for trucks covers plate options.
Safety essentials
- Never exceed the winch's rated line pull — the rating is the limit, not a suggestion.
- Keep everyone clear of the rope while it is under tension, and never step over a loaded line.
- Wear gloves with steel cable, and inspect synthetic rope for fraying before every use.
- Lay a winch damper or heavy blanket over the rope on every pull.
- Keep hands, clothing and hair away from the drum and fairlead while spooling.
- Never use a winch to lift a load overhead or to tow a vehicle on the road.
Three recovery accessories worth buying with any winch here:
WARN Epic snatch block — Doubles your pull for heavy recoveries and lets you change pull direction. Check Price More options: best snatch block for winching.
GearAmerica tree saver strap — The correct anchor for trees — never wrap bare rope or cable around a trunk. Check Price More options: best tree saver strap.
AMBULL D-ring shackles — Rated connection points for straps, blocks and the winch hook. Check Price More options: best D-ring shackles for recovery.
A note on the sizing doctrine: a snatch block doubles pulling power, but it does not change the 1.5x sizing rule. Never buy an undersized winch planning to ‘fix’ it with a block.
Troubleshooting
The most common compact-winch faults, drawn from the maker manuals. Electrical faults outnumber mechanical ones — check the battery and connections first.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Motor runs, drum does not turn | Clutch not engaged | Move the clutch to the In / engaged position and re-test |
| Motor runs slowly or weakly | Low voltage; corroded or loose battery cables | Charge the battery, clean and tighten every connection |
| Motor does not turn on | Loose battery cables; faulty switch or remote | Check cables first, then test with the wired remote |
| Motor overheats | Pulling too long at or near rated load | Stop immediately, let it cool 5 minutes (Champion manual) |
| Rope tangles or spools unevenly | First spool done without tension; damaged fairlead | Re-spool under light tension; inspect the fairlead for burrs |
| AXON load limiter trips | Pull exceeded winch capacity | Reduce the load or re-rig — never override the limiter |
Who should NOT buy these winches
Your loaded truck tops 3,000 lb. A 4,500-lb winch is undersized past that point under the 1.5x rule, and no bargain is worth a winch that cannot finish the pull. Our full-size truck winch guide has the right class.
You winch for work, daily. Contractors, ranchers and tow operators need the duty cycle and serviceability of a bigger platform. See our heavy-duty truck winch guide.
You tow heavy trailers with the truck. Trailer recovery loads dwarf what a compact winch is rated for. The right tool is a full-size winch: 12,000-lb winch guide.
You cannot or will not drill into the truck. Leased and unibody trucks do not take permanent mounts gracefully — that is exactly what the portable pick is for. Read the Winch2Go review above.

FAQ
What size winch does a small truck actually need?
Multiply your truck's loaded weight — curb weight plus people, gear and cargo — by 1.5. That is the industry sizing rule. A 4,500-lb winch suits a rig loaded to about 3,000 lb; a 4,000-lb winch covers about 2,666 lb. Land higher than that and you need the full-size winch class. The size finder in this guide does the math for you.
Can I put a 4,500-lb winch on a Ford Maverick?
Not as a primary recovery winch at working weight. The Maverick's published GVWR is 5,200 lb, needing about 7,800 lb of pull under the 1.5x rule — far past the compact class. A 4,500-lb winch there would be undersized, and we never recommend an undersized winch.
Is a 2,500-lb winch enough for a Suzuki Jimny?
No. The Jimny's published GVWR is 3,163 lb, needing about 4,745 lb of pull — even a 4,500-lb winch is marginal at full GVWR and only fits a lightly loaded Jimny. A 2,500-lb winch would be roughly half the required pull.
Will these compact winches fit my truck's bumper?
Check the bolt pattern before ordering — compact winches do not share one. WARN uses 3.0 x 6.59 in here, X-BULL uses 3.0 x 4.8 in, Black Ops uses 3.0 x 6.6 in, and Champion uses 4.9 x 3 in. Most small-truck bumper plates are drilled for one pattern, so match the winch to the plate. The portable Winch2Go needs no mount at all.
Synthetic rope or steel cable on a small truck?
Synthetic is the better default: lighter, safer if it breaks, and easier on the hands. Steel cable resists abrasion and UV better but kinks, demands gloves, and stores dangerous energy under load. Five of the six winches here ship with synthetic rope.
Do I need a bigger battery or alternator for a compact winch?
Usually not a bigger alternator, but your battery must be healthy. Compact winches draw 208 to 280 amps at full load — enough to collapse a weak battery mid-pull. Keep the engine running during hard pulls and keep terminals clean.
Can a snatch block make a smaller winch big enough?
No — this is the most dangerous myth in winching. A snatch block doubles pulling power and is excellent rigging gear, but it does not change the 1.5x sizing rule. Buying an undersized winch and planning to fix it with a block leaves you one failed rig away from a stuck truck. Size the winch right first, then add the block.
How waterproof are these winches, really?
The WARN VRX 45-S and AXON 45-S are rated IP68 — genuinely submersible per WARN. The X-BULL 4500 is rated IP66: dust and heavy spray, not submersion. The Black Ops 4500 is described only as sealed with a waterproof solenoid — no IP number published. For the Champion and Winch2Go, no rating is published either: keep them dry and covered.
What warranty do WARN VRX and AXON winches carry?
Limited lifetime on mechanical components and 3 years on electrical parts — WARN's published term for both the VRX and AXON lines in North America, and the strongest warranty in this guide. The 7-year term you may see quoted belongs to WARN's VR EVO and ZEON truck winch lines, not to VRX or AXON.
Where do you mount a winch on a unibody truck?
Unibody trucks like the Maverick and Santa Cruz have no frame rails to bolt a plate to, so they need hidden winch mounts tied into the bumper beam and crash structure — a professional install, and one that must work around radar and parking sensors. If that sounds like too much, the portable Winch2Go needs no mount at all.
