How we researched this guide
We compared 5 tile leveling systems for this guide: the Raimondi RLS clip-and-wedge starter kit, the DGSL clip-and-wedge kit, the RTC Spin Doctor spinner-cap kit, the Peygran LS clip-and-wedge system and the Perfect Level Master T-Lock kit. We checked maker and specification sources for Raimondi, Peygran and QEP, including the official Raimondi RLS instructions, the Raimondi RLS catalogue and the QEP LASH project-pack datasheet, and we read owner and trade write-ups on TilersPlace, Bob Vila, Defusco and a DIY tiling journal.
Every Amazon button in this guide points to a listing record we verified during research; the verification evidence for each code is listed in research-notes.md. We did not test any system ourselves, and we print no prices anywhere in this guide. Where a maker figure was not published, we say so instead of filling the gap.
The 30-second answer
Buy the Raimondi RLS Starter Kit for most first-time and small-to-medium tile jobs: it is the simplest clip-and-wedge system here and it comes complete with pliers. Buy the DGSL kit for the best-value complete kit, the RTC Spin Doctor kit for wall tile and delicate stone, the Peygran wedges for large-format work within the Peygran LS system, and the Perfect Level Master T-Lock kit for the strongest-feeling clip of the five. A note on scope first: this guide is about tile leveling systems for floors and walls. It is not about RV leveling, and it does not pretend otherwise.

Clip estimator: how many clips will your floor need?
Enter your floor area and your tile size. The estimator counts one tile per area unit, allows two clips per tile as a planning average, and adds a tenth for spares and breakage. It routes only to kits in this guide, and a job larger than every kit here still gets the strongest bulk pick in the guide, never a dead end.
How to choose a tile leveling system
System type first
Clip-and-wedge systems are the fastest to learn: set the clip, drive the wedge, break the clip off when the adhesive cures. Spinner-cap systems trade a little speed for finer control and a wider pressure pad, which helps on walls and soft stone. Screw-cap systems sit between the two. Pick the mechanism you will actually enjoy using for a whole floor, because fatigue causes more lippage than any clip design.
Joint width
Your grout joint is set by the clip, not by wishful thinking. Raimondi RLS clips cover joints from 1 mm in the Vite screw line upward, DGSL kits in this guide use a 1/8 inch joint, and Spin Doctor bases cover 1/16, 1/8 and 3/16 inch. Decide the joint before you buy, and check that every box in the order uses the same joint, or the floor will show the mix.
Tile thickness
Every clip family has a thickness range, and buying outside it is the most common beginner error. Raimondi RLS clips come in families for tiles from 3 to 12 mm and from 12 to 20 mm. DGSL clips in this guide suit tiles from 1/8 to 1/2 inch, QEP LASH covers 1/4 to 7/16 inch in its standard line, and Spin Doctor bases suit tiles up to 3/4 inch. Measure the tile, then match the clip.
Tile size and format
Large-format tiles and long planks move more while the adhesive cures, so they need more clips per tile and a system that holds firmly across a long edge. Small tiles need fewer clips but reward a system that is quick to set and quick to remove. If your job is mostly large-format porcelain, weight the choice toward Peygran or Spin Doctor; if it is a small bathroom, Raimondi or DGSL will finish sooner.
Wall or floor
Floor work rewards pliers and speed, because gravity helps hold the tile while you work. Wall work rewards a system that grips without slipping, which is why spinner caps earn their keep on walls. Raimondi sells separate floor and wall pliers for exactly this reason.
Reusable parts and running cost
Clips are consumables in every clip-and-wedge system: they break off and stay under the tile. Wedges, pliers and spinner caps are reusable and spread their cost over many jobs. A kit that looks dearer can be cheaper per room once wedges and caps carry over, while a kit with no reusable parts at all keeps charging full fare on every job. Count the reusable parts before comparing kits.
Tile leveling kits by budget
| Tier | What you get | Example pick |
|---|---|---|
| Starter | One complete kit: clips, wedges and pliers for a first room | Raimondi RLS Starter Kit |
| Value | More clips per kit, pliers included, for larger rooms | DGSL Kit with Tile Plier |
| Pro bulk | Reusable wedges for whole-house work within the Peygran LS system | Peygran Leveling System WEDGES |
| Specialist | Spinner caps for walls and delicate stone | RTC Spin Doctor Starter Kit |
A note on a different kind of leveling: if you arrived here looking for camper leveling, the systems on this page will not help you. Camper leveling uses blocks and ramps under wheels, and our own guides to that world are the leveling-blocks comparisons linked in the related guides below, including leveling blocks versus wood and leveling block alternatives for concrete. Tile leveling clips belong under tiles, never under tyres.
Types of tile leveling system
| Type | How it works | Best for | Watch out for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Clip and wedge | Wedge driven into a clip pulls two tiles level | Most floors, beginners | Clips are single-use |
| Spinner cap | Reusable cap spins down a threaded base | Walls, soft stone | Slower per tile |
| Screw cap | Cap twists down a threaded clip | Thin joints, large format | Cap and clip must match |
| Reusable T-pin | Steel pin and wedge, removed whole | Repeat DIY jobs | Remove before adhesive sets |
Detailed reviews of the best tile leveling systems

Best Overall: Raimondi RLS Tile Leveling System Starter Kit
Best Overall
Why the Raimondi RLS Tile Leveling System Starter Kit is our pick
Raimondi introduced its wedge-and-clip system in 2009, and the RLS starter kit remains the clearest entry point. It ships as a complete working kit: clips, wedges and the traction-adjustable pliers you need to drive them. That completeness matters for a first tile job, because it removes the common beginner failure of discovering mid-floor that a needed part was sold separately. It suits floors, walls and home tile thicknesses.
Raimondi RLS Tile Leveling System Starter Kit key specs
- System: RLS clip and wedge, introduced 2009
- Starter kit contents: 100 clips, 100 wedges, floor pliers
- Wedge part number: 180CUNEO100 (100-piece bag)
- Floor pliers part number: 231N; wall pliers part number: 231
- Clip families: tiles 3 to 12 mm and 12 to 20 mm thick
- Vite screw line joints: 1 mm, 1.5 mm and 3 mm
- Classic line minimum joint: 3/32 inch
- Wedges: reusable across jobs
- Clips: single-use, break off below the tile surface
- Anti-chip platform: reusable, suits all RLS clips
- Surfaces: floors and walls
- Warranty: not published in sources checked
Raimondi RLS Tile Leveling System Starter Kit: fits and best for
The starter kit fits first-time tilers, bathroom and kitchen refits, and anyone laying porcelain or ceramic tiles from 3 to 12 mm thick. Wall tilers should add the dedicated wall pliers, sold separately. Large-format tiles need more clips per side, so one box covers less area.
- Complete kit in one box
- Simplest mechanism here
- Wedges and pliers carry over
- Long track record since 2009
- Clip families cover thin and thick tiles
- Clips are single-use, so reorder per job
- Floor pliers only; wall pliers sold separately
- Clips more delicate than some rivals
- Small box for large-format tile
Raimondi RLS Tile Leveling System Starter Kit: what owners report
A professional tiler writing on TilersPlace reports using the system for ten years across formats from 24 by 24 porcelain to wooden planks, and still using the original wedges, while noting a few clips break and the pliers suit floors best. A second trade write-up calls it easy for homeowners.
Raimondi RLS Tile Leveling System Starter Kit: who should not buy
Do not buy the starter kit if your tiles are thicker than 20 mm, if you need a 1 mm joint without the Vite screw line, or if your job is a whole house. The Peygran system below is the better route there.
Raimondi RLS Tile Leveling System Starter Kit: pair it with
Pair it with the reusable anti-chip platform and spare RLS clips in your joint size, ordered before the floor is half laid. Carry the kit in a tool bag from our guide to tool bags under 100.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: set the pliers to your tile thickness first, and never drive a wedge past the clip breaking point.
Best Value Kit: DGSL Tile Leveling System with Tile Plier
Best Value Kit
Why the DGSL Tile Leveling System with Tile Plier is our pick
DGSL earns its place as the value pick by removing the arithmetic that trips up first-time buyers: one kit, 300 clips, 100 wedges and a plier, with no separate parts to chase. That count covers a much larger floor than a 100-clip starter box, suiting a whole kitchen or bathroom. The familiar mechanism needs no relearning, wedges are reusable, and its listing record carries part numbers and a stated tile range. The compromise is a narrower range: 1/8 to 1/2 inch tiles and a 1/8 inch joint here.
DGSL Tile Leveling System with Tile Plier key specs
- System: clip and wedge
- Kit contents: 300 clips, 100 wedges, 1 tile plier
- Joint in kit reviewed: 1/8 inch; 1/16 inch variant also listed
- Tile thickness: 1/8 to 1/2 inch
- Part number: TLS01; model: TSL002
- UPC: 649758675414
- Material: plastic
- Clips: disposable, snap off below the surface
- Wedges: reusable
- Guidance in reviews: 4 clips and 4 wedges per tile
- Minimum joint on wedge variant: 1/16 inch
- Warranty: not published in sources checked
DGSL Tile Leveling System with Tile Plier: fits and best for
The DGSL kit fits value-conscious tilers laying standard porcelain, ceramic, marble or natural stone from 1/8 to 1/2 inch thick. It suits floors and walls, and its generous clip count makes it the natural choice for a full room rather than a repair. Tiles outside that range need a different clip.
- Most clips per complete kit of the five here
- Plier included, unlike some premium kits
- Wedges reusable, lowering the next job cost
- Clear part numbers and stated tile range
- Familiar clip-and-wedge mechanism
- Stated tile range is narrower than Spin Doctor or Raimondi families
- Joint fixed by the kit variant you choose
- Plastic clips are single-use
- No specialist wall plier variant
DGSL Tile Leveling System with Tile Plier: what owners report
Trade round-ups list the DGSL kit as their best value choice, citing flatness and complete contents, and a bestseller analysis records it as the highest-volume clip-and-wedge kit on its marketplace.
DGSL Tile Leveling System with Tile Plier: who should not buy
Do not buy this kit if your tiles are thicker than 1/2 inch, if you need another joint variant, or if your job is wall-heavy delicate stone. The Spin Doctor kit below is the better wall choice.
DGSL Tile Leveling System with Tile Plier: pair it with
Pair it with spare clips in the same joint size, because a mid-floor shortage stops the whole job. See our guide to tool chests under 300 for storage that survives a building site.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: buy the joint variant you actually want grouted; a 1/8 inch kit cannot become a 1/16 inch floor.
Best for Walls: RTC Spin Doctor Tile Lippage Control Starter Kit
Best for Walls
Why the RTC Spin Doctor Tile Lippage Control Starter Kit is our pick
Spin Doctor is the odd one out here, and that is its strength. Instead of a wedge driven into a clip, a reusable cap spins down a threaded base plate, applying pressure across a wider pad with no pliers at all. That difference matters most on walls, where gravity works against you, and on soft stone such as marble, where a wide cap spreads load. The kit pairs 100 reusable caps with 250 base plates, for tiles up to 3/4 inch. The trade-off is speed, but for walls and delicate stone that slower pace buys control wedge systems cannot match.
RTC Spin Doctor Tile Lippage Control Starter Kit key specs
- System: spinner cap over threaded base plate
- Starter kit contents: 100 reusable caps, 250 base plates
- Caps part number: SDCAP; caps listing code: B01IACPX9M
- Base joints: 1/16, 1/8, 3/16 and 1/32 inch variants
- Tile thickness: up to 3/4 inch
- Tools required: none; caps spin down by hand
- Caps: reusable
- Base plates: single-use threaded posts
- Clear shields: optional, sold separately
- Surfaces: floors and walls, strong on walls
- Material: plastic
- Warranty: not published in sources checked
RTC Spin Doctor Tile Lippage Control Starter Kit: fits and best for
The Spin Doctor kit fits wall tilers, marble and soft-stone installers, and anyone who values edge protection over raw speed. It suits tiles up to 3/4 inch thick, and its tool-free tightening helps on ladders and in tight corners where pliers are awkward. Large floors are slower, so floor-first buyers may prefer a wedge kit.
- No pliers needed on the wall
- Wide cap spreads pressure on soft stone
- Caps reusable across many jobs
- Covers tiles up to 3/4 inch thick
- Four joint sizes available
- Slower per tile than wedge systems
- Clear shields are a separate purchase
- Base plates are single-use
- Higher learning curve for wedge users
RTC Spin Doctor Tile Lippage Control Starter Kit: what owners report
Bob Vila names the Spin Doctor system its best pick for walls, while a professional reviewer on TilersPlace reports that it holds more pressure before bases release than wedge systems, at the cost of slower setting.
RTC Spin Doctor Tile Lippage Control Starter Kit: who should not buy
Do not buy this kit if you are racing a large floor deadline, if you want to use up wedge-system clips you already own, or if your tiles are thicker than 3/4 inch.
RTC Spin Doctor Tile Lippage Control Starter Kit: pair it with
Pair it with the clear shields for soft stone and spare base plates in your joint size. A belt for carrying caps and bases is covered in our guide to tool belts under 100.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: spin caps down evenly; overtightening one corner is how lippage sneaks back in.
Best All-Rounder: Peygran Leveling System WEDGES
Best All-Rounder
Why the Peygran Leveling System WEDGES is our pick
Peygran is the newest of the legacy systems here, and its wedges show it: a patented angled design that spreads force more evenly and grips firmly, in a reusable wedge for the Peygran LS system. The LS Classic and LS Compact lines cover heavy pieces and compact, lower-waste work, and the wedges work with the wide Peygran clip range. Its maker is based in Spain. These wedges suit large-format work, where a reusable, well-gripping wedge matters most.
Peygran Leveling System WEDGES key specs
- System: clip and wedge, LS Classic and LS Compact lines
- This listing: Peygran leveling wedges, reusable
- Joints: 1/32, 1/16 and 1/8 inch depending on clip
- Pliers: system pliers, separate from this listing
- Wedges: patented angled design, reusable
- Clips to pair with wedges: LS Classic and LS Compact, by joint size
- Maker base: Spain, made in Europe
- Clip sizes: widest range of the systems here
- Surfaces: floors and walls
- Heavy pieces: LS Classic line rated for heavy tile
- Compact line: smaller joint opening, less waste
- Warranty: not published in sources checked
Peygran Leveling System WEDGES: fits and best for
These wedges fit large-format tilers and installers who already use, or are buying into, the Peygran LS system and want one wedge across many clip sizes. They suit porcelain, ceramic, marble and stone, with the clip family matched to heavy pieces. They are not a complete kit: clips and pliers are separate, so a first job needs those too.
- Patented angled wedge spreads force evenly
- Reusable across jobs
- Fits the wide Peygran clip range
- Clean, smaller joint opening on the Compact line
- European manufacture with LS Classic and Compact lines
- Wedges only: clips and pliers are separate
- A first job also needs clips
- System-specific to Peygran clips
- Choosing among many clip sizes takes care
Peygran Leveling System WEDGES: what owners report
Bob Vila names the Peygran system its best overall pick, while a professional reviewer on TilersPlace calls it one of the most popular tile systems, with some notes on the higher outlay.
Peygran Leveling System WEDGES: who should not buy
Do not buy these wedges alone for a single small repair, where a 100-clip kit is cheaper, or if you already own a complete wedge system. Match the clip family to heavy pieces before ordering.
Peygran Leveling System WEDGES: pair it with
Pair it with spare clips in your exact joint size. Storage for a large kit is covered in our guide to tool chests on Amazon.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: seat each wedge fully in its clip and save the wedges for the next job; they are reusable.
Best Strong Clip: Perfect Level Master T-Lock Tile Leveling Kit
Best Strong Clip
Why the Perfect Level Master T-Lock Tile Leveling Kit is our pick
Perfect Level Master, known as T-Lock, takes the familiar clip-and-wedge idea and makes the clip stronger. Its wedges offer more torque than the Raimondi design in trade comparisons, and they double as shims for lifting or spacing a tile wider than standard. The kit carries 300 clips and 100 wedges for a full room, and suits floors and walls alike. The catch, stated plainly in every trade review, is that pliers are sold separately, so the kit alone is not a working set. Inside that caveat, T-Lock is the strongest-feeling clip of the five.
Perfect Level Master T-Lock Tile Leveling Kit key specs
- System: clip and wedge, T-Lock design
- Kit contents: 300 clips, 100 wedges
- Pliers: sold separately, not in the kit
- Wedges: double as shims for lifting and spacing
- Clip strength: described as stronger than Raimondi in trade reviews
- Surfaces: floors and walls
- Clips: single-use
- Wedges: reusable
- Joint: per clip size chosen
- Tile types: porcelain, ceramic, marble, stone
- Removal: clips break off cleanly per trade reports
- Warranty: not published in sources checked
Perfect Level Master T-Lock Tile Leveling Kit: fits and best for
The T-Lock kit fits experienced tilers, heavy tile, and anyone who has broken clips on earlier jobs and wants a stronger part. It suits full rooms thanks to its 300-clip count, and its shim-capable wedges help on uneven floors. First-time buyers must add pliers; buyers wanting the cheapest complete start should choose Raimondi or DGSL instead.
- Strongest-feeling clip of the five here
- Wedges double as shims, a genuinely useful extra
- 300 clips cover a full room
- Clean clip break reported by trade reviewers
- Suits floors and walls
- Pliers sold separately, so the kit alone is incomplete
- Dearer as a complete working set than the headline suggests
- Fewer long-term owner write-ups than legacy brands
- Wedge-as-shim use needs care to avoid uneven joints
Perfect Level Master T-Lock Tile Leveling Kit: what owners report
A professional reviewer on TilersPlace reports that T-Lock offers more torque than Raimondi in a similar design, while noting the full kit costs more than double the Raimondi kit once pliers are added.
Perfect Level Master T-Lock Tile Leveling Kit: who should not buy
Do not buy this kit as a first kit without also ordering pliers, if your budget only stretches to one complete box, or if your job is a small repair. The Raimondi starter kit is the better first buy.
Perfect Level Master T-Lock Tile Leveling Kit: pair it with
Pair it with compatible pliers ordered at the same time and spare clips in your joint size. A rolling cart for a heavy kit is covered in our guide to rolling tool carts.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: order pliers with the kit, not after it.

Installation basics
Start with a flat, clean substrate and a full bed of adhesive: Raimondi instructions stress that the adhesive must fully embed the clip base, and a starved bed is the most common cause of a clip that will not hold. Spread adhesive, set the first tile, place clips along each side before the neighbour tile goes down, and use more clips per side on large formats. Drive the wedge from the fresh tile toward the tile already set, stopping before the breaking point. Never slide a clip sideways along an edge, which creates voids, and never remove clips before the adhesive has dried. When cured, break the clip off along the joint line and keep the wedges. For carrying a kit between rooms, see our guides to professional tool bags versus personal tools and automotive tool chest reviews, and for the wider leveling world, heavy-duty leveling blocks covers the camper side of the word leveling.
Safety essentials
- Wear eye protection when breaking clips off, because broken plastic can fly.
- Keep fingers clear of the wedge path when driving wedges with pliers.
- Never kick clips off on a wall job from a ladder without stable footing.
- Let adhesive cure fully before removing clips or walking the floor.
- Keep broken clip bases out of grout lines before grouting.
- Store pliers and wedges where children cannot reach sharp clip edges.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Clip breaks while tightening | Wedge driven past breaking point | Stop earlier; replace clip and re-set |
| Tile still lippy after setting | Too few clips per side | Add clips, especially on long edges |
| Clip will not hold | Adhesive bed too thin | Re-bed tile with fuller adhesive |
| Wedge will not enter clip | Pliers not set to tile thickness | Adjust pliers to the tile thickness |
| Chipped tile edge | Delicate edge, no platform | Use anti-chip platform next time |
| Clip base stuck in joint | Removed before adhesive cured | Wait for full cure, then break off |
Who should NOT buy these
Do not buy a leveling system for mosaic sheets. Small mosaics on mesh do not take clips, and a leveling system will fight the sheet instead of helping it. Use a beating block and a flat substrate instead.
Do not buy clips for a floor that is not flat. Leveling systems correct lippage between neighbouring tiles, not a substrate that waves across the room. Level the substrate first, or the clips will hold two tiles level while the floor around them still rolls.
Do not buy the wrong thickness family. A clip made for 3 to 12 mm tiles will not serve a 20 mm paver, and no amount of wedge force fixes that. Measure the tile and match the clip family before ordering.
Do not buy a leveling kit for camper leveling. Tile clips belong under tiles, and camper leveling belongs under wheels, using blocks and ramps. Our guide to leveling blocks versus wood covers that job properly.

.FAQ
What is a tile leveling system?
A tile leveling system is a set of clips and wedges, or caps and bases, that holds neighbouring tiles at the same height while the adhesive cures. It prevents lippage, the small step between two tiles that catches feet and light. It does not replace a flat substrate or good adhesive coverage.
Is the Raimondi system good for beginners?
Yes, and that is its main claim. The starter kit is complete, the mechanism is simple, and the system has been used professionally since 2009. Beginners should still check two things before ordering: the joint size they want, and the tile thickness family. Get those right and the first floor goes far more smoothly.
Are Raimondi wedges reusable?
Yes. Raimondi wedges are reusable across jobs, and the official instructions tell users to save wedges and platforms. Clips are the single-use part: they break off below the tile surface and stay buried under grout. Keeping wedges is the main way the system pays for itself over several rooms.
How many clips do I need per tile?
It depends on tile size. Small tiles may need one clip per side, while large-format tiles and long planks need two or more per long side. Review guidance for the DGSL kit suggests four clips and four wedges per tile as a planning figure. Use the estimator above with your tile size for a job-specific count, then add spares.
Can I use a tile leveling system on walls?
Yes, and wall work is where spinner-cap systems earn their keep. Wedge systems work on walls too, but Raimondi sells dedicated wall pliers for wall work, and Spin Doctor caps need no pliers at all. On walls, work in small sections, because gravity will not help you.
What joint size should I choose?
Choose the joint your design wants, then buy clips in that size: 1/16 inch for a tight modern look, 1/8 inch for a standard floor, 3/16 inch where grout needs more room. Never mix joint sizes in one floor, and check the clip bag label before ordering.
Do I need special pliers?
For wedge systems, yes, or at least the system pliers make the job far easier and more consistent. Spin Doctor caps need no pliers. Peygran pliers add a scale bar for setting pressure to tile thickness. If you buy a kit whose pliers are sold separately, such as T-Lock, order the pliers with the kit.
Can leveling systems fix a bowed tile?
Partly. Leveling clips can pull a moderately bowed tile toward its neighbours and hold it while the adhesive cures, which is why they help with wooden-look planks. They cannot flatten a badly warped tile or a wavy substrate. If a tile rocks badly on a flat surface before adhesive, replace it rather than forcing it.
Raimondi or Peygran: which should I buy?
Buy Raimondi for a first kit or a small-to-medium job, where simplicity and completeness matter most. Buy Peygran wedges for large-format work and bigger jobs, where its patented angled, reusable wedges pair with the wide Peygran clip range. Both are clip-and-wedge systems, so the skills transfer between them.
