How we researched this guide
We compared 5 full synthetic 5W-30 motor oils, all in 5-quart jugs, and checked 6 Amazon listing records (the 5 oils plus 1 oil filter) for part numbers, viscosity, size and maker-stated interval claims. We also checked specification explainers for API SP and ILSAC GF-6 so the specification advice in this guide matches what those standards actually mean.
Owner-report coverage in this research is listing-level only. No independent test data was used, no review text is quoted, and no rating is shown. Where a maker claim is repeated here, it is worded as a maker claim, and the vehicle owner manual is treated as the final word on interval and specification.
The 30-second answer
Engine oil is the fluid; an oil change is the service that replaces it, along with the filter. Buy the viscosity and specification your manual names, then let the manual interval — not the number on the bottle — set the change. For most everyday drivers that points to the Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-30, for a longer maker-stated drain to the Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W-30, for an everyday full synthetic alternative to the Valvoline Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-30, for a gas-to-liquid base oil to the Pennzoil Platinum Full Synthetic 5W-30, and for engines past 75,000 miles to the Valvoline Full Synthetic High Mileage with MaxLife Technology 5W-30.

Oil-change interval finder
This finder narrows the pick. It never extends your interval: your owner manual sets the change, and severe driving shortens it. Answer the two questions and the finder names one pick from this article.
How to choose engine oil for your oil change
Match the viscosity your manual names
In a grade such as 5W-30, the first number describes cold flow and the second describes thickness at operating temperature. All five picks here are 5W-30, so this guide only helps if your manual actually calls for 5W-30. Do not substitute a different grade because a bottle is on offer.
Match the specification, not just the grade
Look for the API and ILSAC marks your manual requires, such as API SP and ILSAC GF-6, plus any maker approval such as GM dexos where your manual calls for one. A correct viscosity with the wrong specification is still the wrong oil, and a specification your engine does not need adds nothing.
Let the manual set the interval
Oil type affects how well oil holds up inside an interval; it does not rewrite the interval. The maker figures quoted in this guide are bottle claims with conditions attached. If your manual says a shorter interval, the manual wins, and the oil-life monitor, where fitted, is a second check, not a replacement for it.
Count severe service honestly
Short trips under five miles, stop-and-go traffic, long idling, towing, extreme heat or cold, and dusty roads all count as severe service for many manuals. Under severe service the safe interval shortens, because the engine may never fully warm up and moisture and fuel stay in the oil longer.
Match the oil to the engine’s age
A new or low-mileage engine needs the specified full synthetic and nothing more exotic. Past 75,000 miles, seal conditioners in a high-mileage formula address the leaks and consumption older engines develop. Buying a high-mileage oil for a new engine is not harmful in itself, but it solves a problem you do not yet have.
Pair every change with the right filter
An oil change without a filter change leaves old contaminants in the system, and a long-drain oil needs a filter rated for that longer drain. Check filter fitment for your exact vehicle before ordering, because filter thread and size vary, and a filter that looks close is not the same as a filter that fits.
Engine oil by approach
| Approach | What you get | Example pick |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday | Specified full synthetic, manual interval | Mobil 1 Advanced 5W-30 |
| Extended drain | Longer maker-stated drain, long-drain filter needed | Castrol EDGE Extended 5W-30 |
| High mileage | Seal conditioners for older engines | Valvoline MaxLife 5W-30 |
| Base-oil choice | Gas-to-liquid base oil, guarantee conditions apply | Pennzoil Platinum 5W-30 |
Types of engine oil in this comparison
| Type | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full synthetic | Resists oxidation and heat breakdown | Must still match spec and interval | Most modern engines |
| Extended-performance synthetic | Longer maker-stated drain | Needs a long-drain filter; manual governs | Drivers who want fewer changes |
| High-mileage synthetic | Seal conditioners for older engines | No benefit before age-related wear appears | Engines over 75,000 miles |
The distinction that matters most is not the marketing label but the specification on the bottle and the interval in your manual. For a fuller view of the wider maintenance picture, see our maintenance checklist, and for the categories this guide sits in, see Engine and Maintenance and Engine Oil.
Detailed reviews: the five 5W-30 oils compared
Each block below follows the same pattern: why it is a pick, its documented specs, who it fits, what owners report at listing level, who should skip it, and what to pair it with. No block claims a test result, and every interval figure is a maker claim with the manual as the governing document.
Best everyday pick: Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-30
Best everyday pick
Why the Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-30 is our pick
This is the straightforward choice: a full synthetic meeting ILSAC GF-6, with a maker-stated window of up to 10,000 miles or one year, whichever comes first. ExxonMobil lists it for modern passenger cars, SUVs, light vans and light trucks.

Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-30: what owners report
Owner-report coverage here is listing-level only, so this section reports themes rather than quoted reviews. Listing traffic for this oil centres on its everyday use in cars and trucks and on its GF-6 specification, which is what buyers check before ordering. No star rating or review wording is reproduced here, and no test conclusion is drawn from listing traffic. For the listing itself, see the Mobil 1 Advanced 5W-30 listing.
Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-30: who should not buy
If your manual calls for a different viscosity, a different specification, or a maker approval this oil does not carry, do not buy it on the strength of this guide. If your engine is past 75,000 miles and showing consumption or seepage, the high-mileage pick below is the more relevant choice. See the oil drain pan guide before your first do-it-yourself change.
Mobil 1 Advanced Full Synthetic 5W-30: pair it with
Pair every change with a new filter matched to your vehicle, such as the Mobil 1 M1-110A filter where fitment matches. Check fitment first, because this filter is vehicle-specific. Check Price

Longest maker-stated drain: Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W-30
Longest maker-stated drain
Why the Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W-30 is our pick
This is the pick for the longest maker-stated drain: Castrol states a 25,000-mile interval and describes this as its strongest motor oil. That claim only helps if your manual allows a long drain and your filter is rated for it.
Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W-30 key specs
- Viscosity: 5W-30
- Type: Advanced full synthetic motor oil
- Size: 5 quarts (160 fluid ounces)
- Part number: 1598B1
- UPC: 079191230879
- Maker drain claim: Extended drain interval of 25,000 miles
- Maker description: Castrol’s strongest motor oil as stated by Castrol
- Standards stated: Exceeds API and GM dexos test limits as stated by Castrol
- ACEA: Performance requirements of ACEA as stated by Castrol
- Vehicle types listed: Car, gasoline and light-duty diesel, hybrids, truck
- Container: 5-quart jug

Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W-30: fits and best for
This oil fits engines whose manuals call for 5W-30 and permit a long drain, and it is best for high-mileage drivers wanting fewer changes. It is not a shortcut around a shorter manual interval, nor a fix for oil consumption.
Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W-30 pros and watch-outs
- Longest maker-stated drain in this comparison
- Full synthetic with broad listed vehicle coverage
- Stated dexos and ACEA performance claims
- Single 5-quart jug for most fills
- Long drain needs a filter rated for longer intervals
- Manual interval still governs over the bottle claim
- Short-trip driving calls for the severe-service schedule
Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W-30: what owners report
Owner-report coverage here is listing-level only. Listing traffic for this oil centres on its extended-drain positioning. No review wording or rating is reproduced, and no conclusion about real-world drain life is drawn from listing traffic. For the listing itself, see the Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W-30 listing.
Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W-30: who should not buy
If your manual sets a short interval, or your driving is severe service, do not stretch to the bottle figure. If your engine consumes oil, a longer drain makes monitoring harder, not easier, so choose a standard interval oil and check the level often. Drivers who want a plain everyday oil should look at the Valvoline Advanced pick below.
Castrol EDGE Extended Performance 5W-30: pair it with
Pair this oil with a filter rated for longer intervals, matched to your exact vehicle, and change the filter with the oil. A filter that is not rated for a long drain is the weak link in any extended-drain plan. The Mobil 1 M1-110A filter is one verified option where fitment matches. Check Price
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: check the oil level at every fuel stop during a long drain, because a long interval only works if the level stays full. See our engine flush guide for gas engines before adding any flush product to a long-drain plan.

Valvoline Full Synthetic High Mileage MaxLife 5W-30: what owners report
Owner-report coverage here is listing-level only. Listing traffic for this oil centres on high-mileage use in cars and trucks, which matches its stated age threshold. No review wording or rating is reproduced, and no claim about leak reduction in any specific engine is made from listing traffic. For the listing itself, see the Valvoline MaxLife 5W-30 listing.
Valvoline Full Synthetic High Mileage MaxLife 5W-30: who should not buy
If your engine is low mileage and tight, do not buy a high-mileage formula for a problem you do not have; choose an everyday pick instead. If your engine has a major leak or mechanical fault, see a mechanic rather than hoping an oil change will fix it. If your manual calls for a different grade, this oil is not a substitute.
Valvoline Full Synthetic High Mileage MaxLife 5W-30: pair it with
Pair this oil with a new filter at every change, and check the level more often on an older engine, because consumption is the issue this oil is meant to manage. The Mobil 1 M1-110A filter is one verified option where fitment matches. Check Price
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: log the level at each fuel stop for the first month after switching, so you learn your engine’s real consumption rate. See our automotive degreasers guide if seepage has left residue you need to clean before you can spot a new leak.

Oil change basics
An oil change is a short, repeatable job, but its details matter. Warm the engine only as your manual directs, because hot oil burns and cold oil drains slowly, and never work under a vehicle supported only by a jack. Drain the old oil fully, replace the filter, fit the drain plug to the torque your manual states, and fill with the amount your manual states, not the jug size. Start the engine, check for leaks at the filter and plug, stop, wait, and recheck the level, topping up only to the full mark. Keep the old oil in a sealed container for recycling, and never pour it on the ground or into a drain. For the tools this job needs, see our oil drain pan guide and our oil filter wrench guide, and for diesel owners, note that diesel engines have their own specifications, as covered in our heavy-duty diesel truck engine guide.
Safety essentials
Never work under a vehicle held up only by a jack; use rated stands on level ground. Let hot oil cool enough to handle safely, and wear gloves and eye protection. Keep the drain plug and filter threads clean so neither cross-threads. Fill only to the full mark, never above it. Check for leaks after starting, before driving. Recycle used oil and filters through a proper collection point.
Three items for a safe change, each with a verified listing: the Mobil 1 M1-110A filter where fitment matches, Check Price; the Mobil 1 Advanced oil for the fill, Check Price; and the Valvoline MaxLife oil for an older engine’s fill, Check Price. The winch accessory pool in the pattern brief does not apply to this oil article, so no winch accessory is listed here; the drain pan and filter wrench are covered by the internal guides linked above.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Oil level drops between changes | Consumption or a slow leak | Check level weekly; inspect for seepage |
| Oil looks dark soon after a change | Normal soot and deposits in use | Judge by interval, not colour alone |
| Oil warning light comes on | Low level or low pressure | Stop safely; check level; seek help |
| Leak at the filter after a change | Old gasket left behind or loose filter | Remove, clean seat, refit correctly |
| Leak at the drain plug | Worn washer or wrong torque | Replace washer; torque to manual spec |
| Wrong oil added by mistake | Grade or specification mismatch | Do not drive far; drain and refill correctly |
Who should NOT buy these
Drivers whose manual calls for a different grade should not buy any of these oils. Every pick here is 5W-30, so a manual that calls for 0W-20, 5W-20 or any other grade rules out the whole group, however well documented the oil is.
Drivers with a mechanical fault should not buy oil as a repair. A failed seal, a worn bearing or a major leak needs diagnosis and repair, and no high-mileage formula or extended-drain oil will restore a worn engine.
Drivers who will not check the level should not choose a long drain. Extended intervals only work when the level stays full, so if level checks will not happen, a standard manual interval with frequent checks is the safer plan.
Diesel owners with a diesel-specific specification should not assume these gasoline-focused picks cover them. Check the diesel specification your manual names, including any diesel approval, before using any oil in this comparison.

FAQ
What is the difference between engine oil and an oil change?
Engine oil is the fluid that lubricates, cools and cleans inside the engine. An oil change is the service that drains the old oil, replaces the filter and refills with fresh oil to the level and specification your manual states. Buying good oil without changing it on schedule, or changing on schedule with the wrong oil, both miss the point.
How often should I change my engine oil?
Follow your owner manual, including its severe-service schedule where your driving qualifies. Oil type affects how well oil holds up inside that interval, but it does not rewrite the interval. Short trips, stop-and-go traffic, towing, idling, dust and extreme temperatures all shorten the safe interval for many manuals.
Does full synthetic oil really last longer than conventional oil?
Full synthetic base stock resists oxidation and thermal breakdown better than conventional oil and flows better at cold start, which is why maker-stated windows for full synthetics are longer. That does not make the bottle figure your interval. Your manual interval still governs, and the filter must be rated for any longer drain you plan.
What does 5W-30 mean?
In 5W-30, the first number describes how the oil flows when cold and the second describes its thickness at operating temperature. The grade must match your manual, and the specification matters just as much: look for the API and ILSAC marks your manual requires, plus any maker approval such as GM dexos where it is called for.
Can I use a high-mileage oil in a newer engine?
You can, but there is no benefit before age-related issues appear. High-mileage formulas add seal conditioners for engines past 75,000 miles that are starting to show seepage or consumption. A tight, low-mileage engine gains nothing from them, so an everyday full synthetic is the simpler choice until that threshold.
Should I change the filter at every oil change?
Yes. An oil change without a filter change leaves trapped contaminants in the system, and a long-drain oil needs a filter rated for that longer drain. Always check filter fitment for your exact vehicle, because thread size and dimensions vary, and a filter that looks close is not the same as one that fits.
Is dark oil a sign that I need a change immediately?
Not on its own. Oil darkens in normal use as it carries soot and deposits, so colour alone does not set the interval. Judge the change by mileage, time and your manual schedule, and by the level on the dipstick. A sudden drop in level, a warning light or a new leak matters far more than colour.
What happens if I use the wrong viscosity?
The wrong viscosity can change cold-start flow and operating-temperature film strength, and it can affect efficiency. Using the manufacturer recommended grade protects both protection and economy, while a thicker or thinner grade than specified risks wear or reduced efficiency. If the wrong oil was just added, drain and refill with the correct grade and specification.
Do I need an engine flush with every oil change?
No. A flush is not part of a routine oil change, and it should never be added casually to a long-drain plan. If you are considering one, read a dedicated guide first, such as our engine flush guide for gas engines, and follow your manual rather than treating a flush as routine maintenance.
