Best Heavy Duty Truck Oil Drain Pan (2026): 6 Picks

Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This comes at no extra cost to you.

How we researched this guide

We compared six oil drain pans across three families — closed containers, open pans and a rolling low-profile drain — checking each against maker and retailer documents: FloTool via Northern Tool, Lisle via AutoZone and ToolWeb, Capri Tools listing data, and ATD Tools’ own page. Capacities, dimensions and heights are quoted as the makers state them.

For sizing we checked engine oil capacities against published fluid-capacity charts for the Power Stroke, Cummins, Duramax, 6.4L HEMI and F-150 5.0L, and reviewed owner reports and retailer Q&A, linked in each review. We do not test drain pans and we print no prices. Start with our heavy-duty oils and fluids archive.

The 30-second answer

Buy the pan by your engine’s oil volume, not the badge. Most owners should buy the FloTool Super Duty 24-Qt Drain Container: closed, sealed and big enough for every HD diesel here. Short on space, the FloTool 16-Qt covers Duramax and Cummins drains. Prefer an open pan? The Lisle 17972 and Capri Tools CP21023 sit lowest under stock trucks, the ATD Tools 5183 adds a parts apron, and the rolling Lisle 19202 serves shops and fleets. Diesel owners: see our diesel truck winch guide.

Best Overall

FloTool Super Duty 24-Qt Drain Container 42004MI

Best if your truck drains 12 to 15 qt and the used oil rides to the recycler: a closed 24 qt container with a filter drain cradle, capped pour spout and three grips, sized by its maker for 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups.

Best Compact Closed Container

FloTool Super Duty 16-Qt Drain Container 42003MI

Best if you want the sealed routine in a smaller, lower body: 16 qt, leak-proof, stores upright or flat, and 6.25 in tall, so it slides under stock trucks and takes a full Duramax or Cummins drain with room to spare.

Best Open Pan for Stock Height

Lisle 17972 Oval Drain Pan

Best if you prefer a simple open pan that wipes clean: an 18 qt oval with a maker-claimed 60 percent larger catch area, a jug-sized spout and an anti-splash lip, at a low 6.25 in height.

Best Easy-Clean Open Pan

Capri Tools CP21023 Portable Oil Drain Pan

Best if low profile matters most: at 6 in tall this 4.5 gal open pan leaves hand room to hold the drain plug on the last threads, and the smooth polyethylene wipes out fast. Green is Capri’s anti-freeze colourway; owners use it for oil too.

Best Extra-Large Open Tub

ATD Tools 5183 Heavy-Duty Drain Tub

Best if one drain is never the whole job: a 30 qt open tub whose large apron doubles as a filter-drain and parts-washing surface when transmission or coolant work follows. It is 8 in deep, so lifted trucks suit it best.

Best Rolling Pan for Shops and Fleets

Lisle 19202 Low-Profile Truck Drain

Best if you service several trucks back to back: a 60 qt rolling drain on four rollers with a lid, built to roll under most cab-over axles so changes happen without jacks or stands. Plan storage — it is 49 in long.

Height is the second number that matters: a pan that holds the oil but does not fit under a stock truck is the wrong pan.

Drain pan finder: match the pan to your engine

Pick your engine and the oil volume fills in from the sourced capacity table in this guide, then pick stock or lifted height. Every result recommends a pan from this guide that beats your engine’s full oil volume, with its button.

How to choose a heavy duty truck oil drain pan

Capacity vs your engine’s oil volume

Start with the capacity table below, then add headroom. A Power Stroke drains about 13 to 15 qt with the filter, a Cummins 12 qt and a Duramax 10 qt — before the filter’s oil joins it. A pan rated at or below engine volume overflows mid-drain. Our rule: at least 2 qt over.

Pan height and ground clearance

Measure floor to drain plug, then subtract room for your arm and wrench. Pans here range from 6 in (Capri) to 8 in (FloTool 24 qt, ATD tub), and 2 in decides whether you work comfortably or jack the truck up needlessly. Lifted trucks can buy on capacity alone.

Open pan vs closed container and transport

Open pans catch best and wipe clean fastest, but a full open pan is a sloshing tray carried at arm’s length. Closed containers such as the two FloTools catch through a recessed basin, then seal so oil rides flat or upright to the recycler. A drive away? Closed wins. Shop drum? Open is simpler.

Spout, valve and recycling

Emptying is where cheap pans fail. Look for a spout sized to a jug mouth — Lisle’s 1.125 in spout is the explicit example — or a capped spout on closed containers. A drain valve on the truck, covered in Safety essentials, slows the stream to a hose-width flow.

Material and hot oil

Every pan here is a polyethylene-class plastic except where a maker does not publish the material: these plastics shrug off solvents, do not rust, and flex instead of denting. Hot oil is still hot — drain warm, not straight off a tow, and set the pan on flat concrete, never gravel.

Filter drain provisions

A diesel filter holds a real slug of oil and drips for minutes. The FloTool 24 qt builds the answer in: a molded filter drain cradle. The ATD tub answers with its apron. With the other pans, set the filter upside down in a corner and give it time.

Each review follows the same order — why it earns its award, specs, fit, pros and watch-outs, owner reports, who should skip it, and pairings.

Best Overall: FloTool Super Duty 24-Qt Drain Container 42004MI

Best Overall

Why the FloTool Super Duty 24-Qt Drain Container 42004MI is our pick

The 42004MI solves the whole job in one body: it catches a full 15 qt Power Stroke drain with 9 qt to spare, drains the filter in its molded cradle while you work, then seals and pours from its capped spout at the recycler. The retailer spec names 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups outright.

FloTool Super Duty 24-Qt Drain Container 42004MI key specs

  • Part number: 42004MI (Hopkins FloTool)
  • Capacity: 24 qt (6 gal)
  • Dimensions: 27.75 x 18 x 8 in
  • Type: closed drain container
  • Filter handling: molded-in oil filter drain cradle
  • Pour: built-in spout with no-leak cap
  • Grips: 3 ergonomic hand grips
  • Storage: upright or flat
  • Origin: made in USA
  • Ship weight: 5.0 lb

FloTool Super Duty 24-Qt Drain Container 42004MI: fits and best for

Best for 2023-and-later Power Stroke owners and anyone whose used oil travels to a recycling point. At 8 in tall it wants a lifted truck, ramps or stands. More context: our oils and fluids archive.

FloTool Super Duty 24-Qt Drain Container 42004MI pros and watch-outs

Pros

  • Clears the largest HD diesel drain with headroom
  • Filter cradle drains the filter while you work
  • Sealed cap makes the recycler run spill-free
  • Three grips tame a heavy, full container

Watch-outs

  • 8 in height is the tallest closed option here
  • Small spout gasket is easy to lose, per an owner report
  • Basin opening is smaller than an open pan

FloTool Super Duty 24-Qt Drain Container 42004MI: what owners report

A verified buyer on Walmart bought it for a 13 qt truck drain, praised the extra length and sturdiness, and warned that the small pour-spout gasket can go missing.

Retailer positioning matches the capacity math here: Northern Tool names 3/4-ton and 1-ton pickups and farm tractors as the intended users.

FloTool Super Duty 24-Qt Drain Container 42004MI: who should not buy

Skip it if your stock-height truck leaves you under 8 in of working room and you will not use ramps — the Capri Tools CP21023 is the low-profile answer in this guide.

FloTool Super Duty 24-Qt Drain Container 42004MI: pair it with

Pair it with the FloTool Super Quick Fill Funnel from Safety essentials for one-handed jug transfers at the recycler.

Tip: park the filter in the cradle first and crack it loose before the plug — the slowest drip gets the longest time. While it drips, run our maintenance checklist.

Best Compact Closed Container: FloTool Super Duty 16-Qt Drain Container 42003MI

Best Compact Closed Container

Why the FloTool Super Duty 16-Qt Drain Container 42003MI is our pick

The 42003MI is the sealed routine in a body that still slides under a stock truck: 16 qt clears a Duramax with 6 qt of headroom and a Cummins with 4 qt, the extended basin catches the full stream arc, and the leak-proof caps let it store upright or flat between changes.

FloTool Super Duty 16-Qt Drain Container 42003MI key specs

  • Part number: 42003MI (Hopkins FloTool)
  • Capacity: 16 qt (4 gal)
  • Dimensions: 20.06 x 17.19 x 6.25 in
  • Type: closed drain container, leak-proof design
  • Handles: integrated handle and corner grips
  • Storage: upright or flat without leaking
  • Material: plastic
  • Origin: made in USA
  • Warranty: 90-day limited (retailer spec blocks)

FloTool Super Duty 16-Qt Drain Container 42003MI: fits and best for

Best for Duramax and Cummins owners, and 2011–2022 Power Stroke owners at the 13 qt figure, working at stock height. On a 2023-and-later Power Stroke at 15 qt, the headroom is too thin — step up. See our heavy-duty truck winch guide.

FloTool Super Duty 16-Qt Drain Container 42003MI pros and watch-outs

Pros

  • Lowest closed container here at 6.25 in
  • Seals for transport; no separate jug on the road
  • Extended basin catches the strong initial stream
  • Stores flat or upright, saving shelf space

Watch-outs

  • Only 1 qt over a 15 qt drain — use the 24 qt instead
  • Catch opening is smaller than an open pan’s
  • 90-day warranty is the shortest stated here

FloTool Super Duty 16-Qt Drain Container 42003MI: what owners report

Owners answering questions on Advance Auto Parts report holding about 14 qt confidently without filling it completely, and retailer answers confirm the roughly 6 in flat height.

The recurring shopper question is the stream arc — oil leaving a diesel plug travels sideways before it falls — and the extended basin is the maker’s stated answer, echoed in the Northern Tool listing.

FloTool Super Duty 16-Qt Drain Container 42003MI: who should not buy

Skip it if your engine drains 15 qt or you routinely drain two trucks between recycler runs. The FloTool 24-Qt 42004MI is the same routine with real headroom.

FloTool Super Duty 16-Qt Drain Container 42003MI: pair it with

Pair it with the PIG oil-only pads from Safety essentials: sealed container plus pads is the cleanest home-garage setup here.

Best Open Pan for Stock Height: Lisle 17972 Oval Drain Pan

Best Open Pan for Stock Height

Why the Lisle 17972 Oval Drain Pan is our pick

The 17972 is the open pan done for big drains: Lisle claims a 60 percent larger catch area than its predecessor design, the oval holds 18 qt, and the 1.125 in spout pours into standard jugs without a funnel hunt. At 6.25 in it keeps stock-height work comfortable.

Lisle 17972 Oval Drain Pan key specs

  • Part number: 17972 (Lisle)
  • Capacity: 18 qt (4.5 gal)
  • Dimensions: 26 x 18 x 6.25 in
  • Material: high-density polyethylene, chemical and solvent resistant
  • Shape: oval, smooth wipe-clean surface
  • Spout: 1.125 in outer diameter
  • Splash control: anti-splash lip
  • Handles: multiple hand positions
  • Weight: about 1.7 lb
  • Warranty: lifetime (retail spec block)

Lisle 17972 Oval Drain Pan: fits and best for

Best for owners of any HD diesel here who pour into jugs on site and want the easiest clean-up. The wide oval forgives imperfect positioning, which matters on a creeper. See our truck winch guide.

Lisle 17972 Oval Drain Pan pros and watch-outs

Pros

  • Widest forgiving catch in a low pan
  • Jug-sized spout pours without a funnel
  • Smooth surface wipes genuinely clean
  • Anti-splash lip helps on the carry

Watch-outs

  • Open oil sloshes if carried far or full
  • No filter cradle; park the filter in a corner
  • No lid for storage or transport

Lisle 17972 Oval Drain Pan: what owners report

Owner coverage for this pan is thinner than for the FloTool containers, and we say so plainly: detailed write-ups are few, and the practical points live in retailer listings.

Those listings — AutoZone and MPR Tools — repeat the same notes: the wider catch ends mid-drain repositioning, and the smooth pan wipes out clean.

Lisle 17972 Oval Drain Pan: who should not buy

Skip it if your used oil rides in a vehicle to the recycler — an open pan is the wrong tool for transport. The FloTool 16-Qt 42003MI seals the same class of drain.

Lisle 17972 Oval Drain Pan: pair it with

Pair it with the Fumoto valve in Safety essentials if your plug thread matches: a hose-fed stream into this wide oval is the tidiest open-pan routine here.

Best Easy-Clean Open Pan: Capri Tools CP21023 Portable Oil Drain Pan

Best Easy-Clean Open Pan

Why the Capri Tools CP21023 Portable Oil Drain Pan is our pick

The CP21023 earns its place on height and handling: 6 in is the lowest profile here, leaving your free hand room to hold the drain plug through the last threads — the moment most driveway spills are born. The open body then wipes clean in seconds.

Capri Tools CP21023 Portable Oil Drain Pan key specs

  • Part number: CP21023 (Capri Tools)
  • Capacity: 4.5 gal (maker also lists 16 litres)
  • Dimensions: 23 x 19 x 6 in
  • Material: high-density polyethylene, chemical and solvent resistant
  • Type: open portable drain pan
  • Splash control: anti-splash lip
  • Handle: molded, for carrying, pouring and storing
  • Weight: 2.14 to 2.5 lb by listing
  • Warranty: 1 year

Capri Tools CP21023 Portable Oil Drain Pan: fits and best for

Best for stock-height trucks where every inch under the plug matters, and for owners who drain one truck at a time and pour off promptly. The green breaks the black-for-oil convention, so label it if your shop colour-codes fluids. See our pickup winch guide.

Capri Tools CP21023 Portable Oil Drain Pan pros and watch-outs

Pros

  • Lowest pan here at 6 in tall
  • Room to hold the plug on the last threads
  • Large direct opening; nothing to vent
  • Molded handle makes the pour controlled

Watch-outs

  • Green is the coolant colourway — label it for oil
  • Maker litre and gallon figures do not convert exactly
  • Open oil must be poured off promptly

Capri Tools CP21023 Portable Oil Drain Pan: what owners report

A long-term owner review at The Track Ahead replaced a closed pan whose spout cap crumbled after years of oil exposure, and valued this open design because there is no vent hole to manage when pouring.

The same owner credits the lower profile with ending a familiar failure: fighting a tall pan for hand room, dropping the drain bolt into the oil, and watching the drain overflow. Listing data via CarKart matches the maker figures.

Capri Tools CP21023 Portable Oil Drain Pan: who should not buy

Skip it if you need sealed transport or you colour-code strictly by fluid and will not label a green pan. The Lisle 17972 is the black open alternative.

Capri Tools CP21023 Portable Oil Drain Pan: pair it with

Pair it with the PIG oil-only pads from Safety essentials: lowest pan plus pads is the driveway-friendly combination.

Best Extra-Large Open Tub: ATD Tools 5183 Heavy-Duty Drain Tub

Best Extra-Large Open Tub

Why the ATD Tools 5183 Heavy-Duty Drain Tub is our pick

The 5183 is less a pan than a workstation: 30 qt under a wide apron that drains filters and washes small parts, so one tub covers the oil change and the transmission or coolant job after it. For mixed-fluid shops and farms, that apron is the reason to buy it.

ATD Tools 5183 Heavy-Duty Drain Tub key specs

  • Part number: ATD-5183 (ATD Tools)
  • Capacity: 30 qt
  • Dimensions: 33 x 22 x 8 in (maker)
  • Type: open drain tub with large apron
  • Uses stated by maker: radiators, crankcases, transmissions, differentials
  • Filter handling: apron serves as filter-drain and parts-washing surface
  • Weight: about 5 lb
  • Material: not published by the maker
  • Warranty: 1-year limited (maker)

ATD Tools 5183 Heavy-Duty Drain Tub: fits and best for

Best for lifted trucks, farms and small shops where the tub earns its shelf space across several fluid jobs. At 8 in deep it is the joint-tallest pick here, so stock-height owners without ramps should pick a 6 to 6.25 in pan instead. See our winch installation guide.

ATD Tools 5183 Heavy-Duty Drain Tub pros and watch-outs

Pros

  • 30 qt swallows any single drain here
  • Apron drains filters and parts, no second tray
  • One tub for oil, coolant, transmission and diff work
  • Wide stance resists tipping on shop floors

Watch-outs

  • 8 in depth is wrong for low stock trucks
  • Maker does not publish the tub material
  • Open and wide: a full tub is an awkward carry

ATD Tools 5183 Heavy-Duty Drain Tub: what owners report

Owner coverage for the 5183 is thin, and we say so plainly: detailed long-term write-ups are scarce, and most guidance comes from the maker and tool retailers.

That record — the ATD Tools product page and the Zoro listing — positions the tub for fleet and multi-fluid work rather than single oil changes, exactly the role this guide assigns it.

ATD Tools 5183 Heavy-Duty Drain Tub: who should not buy

Skip it if you only change engine oil at stock height — you are buying apron and depth you will not use. The Lisle 17972 does the single-job role lower and lighter.

ATD Tools 5183 Heavy-Duty Drain Tub: pair it with

Pair it with the FloTool funnel from Safety essentials: pouring 20-plus quarts from a wide tub into jugs is where a big funnel earns its space.

Tip: use the apron as the filter station from the start — filter upside down on the apron, plug draining into the tub. See our winch power guide.

Best Rolling Pan for Shops and Fleets: Lisle 19202 Low-Profile Truck Drain

Best Rolling Pan for Shops and Fleets

Why the Lisle 19202 Low-Profile Truck Drain is our pick

The 19202 removes the two worst parts of fleet oil work: lifting the truck and lifting the oil. Sixty quarts roll on four rollers under most cab-over axles, the lid and curved sides keep fluid in while it moves, and pour handles empty it without a dead lift. It is a shop tool.

Lisle 19202 Low-Profile Truck Drain key specs

  • Part number: 19202 (Lisle)
  • Capacity: 60 qt (15 gal)
  • Dimensions: 49 x 32.25 x 7.5 in
  • Material: high-density polyethylene (retailer spec block)
  • Mobility: 4 rollers plus positioning handle
  • Containment: cover/lid and curved sides for movement
  • Pour: handles and pour spout for evacuation
  • Stated use: rolls under most cab-over axles; no jacks or jack stands needed
  • Weight: 26 lb
  • Warranty: lifetime (ToolWeb)

Lisle 19202 Low-Profile Truck Drain: fits and best for

Best for shops, farms and families draining several HD trucks or a small fleet in one session. The 49 in length needs a storage plan — measure its corner before ordering. See our full-size truck winch guide.

Lisle 19202 Low-Profile Truck Drain pros and watch-outs

Pros

  • Four drains between emptying, even at 15 qt each
  • Rolls full; nobody lifts 60 qt of oil
  • Lid contains fluid while it moves
  • Works under cab-over axles without jacking

Watch-outs

  • 49 in long: storage is a real constraint
  • 7.5 in height will not suit low cars
  • Shop-tier cost for a home garage

Lisle 19202 Low-Profile Truck Drain: what owners report

Owner coverage for the 19202 is thin, and we say so plainly: this is a trade tool whose feedback sits with retailers rather than forums.

The retailer record is consistent — AutoZone and ToolWeb both describe the rollers, lid and cab-over use, and flag the size to plan around.

Lisle 19202 Low-Profile Truck Drain: who should not buy

Skip it if you drain one truck twice a year in a small garage — the footprint will annoy you more than the carrying ever did. The FloTool 24-Qt 42004MI is the home-scale answer.

Read the table by your constraint: height if stock, capacity if a late Power Stroke, sealed transport if the recycler is a drive away.

Use and installation basics: draining a heavy duty truck cleanly

Warm the engine for a few minutes so the oil flows, then let it sit briefly — warm oil drains fully, scalding oil punishes mistakes. Park on flat concrete, set the brake, chock a wheel. Position the pan biased toward the plug’s arc, crack the filter loose a quarter turn, then remove the plug in one motion and keep hold of it. Crush washers are single-use parts on many trucks: fit a new one, torque the plug to your manual’s figure, and wipe the area clean so a fresh leak shows later.

Let the filter drain in the pan, cradle or apron while you inspect the truck — the routine pairs with our maintenance checklist and accessories guide. Refill, run briefly, shut down, and recheck the dipstick on level ground.

Disposal is law: the US EPA used-oil guidance tells home changers to collect used oil in a leak-proof container, never mix it with other fluids, and take it — and the drained filter — to a collection point. Never pour it on the ground, into a drain or into trash. Local rules vary, so check yours.

Safety essentials

Safety rules

  • Treat drained oil as hot until proven otherwise: warm the engine briefly, never drain straight off a hard tow.
  • Never work under a truck held by a jack alone. Use rated stands on flat concrete, set the brake and chock a wheel.
  • Keep the drain plug in your hand through the last threads. A plug dropped into the pan can overflow it, and fishing in hot oil burns.
  • Contain first, clean second: lay absorbent pads before you start, and stop a spill at its edge.
  • Used oil goes in a sealed, labelled container to a collection point. Never into drains, ground or trash, and never mixed with coolant or solvent.
  • Wash skin after contact and keep used oil away from children and animals.

Three accessories complete the setup, each with a verified listing. The FloTool 10714WR Super Quick Fill Funnel covers refills and jug transfers.

Who should NOT buy these drain pans

Owners of low cars and tight-plug half-tons. These pans are sized for HD trucks. If your vehicle needs a sub-5 in pan, a car-focused guide serves you better; our F-150 guide covers that class.

Anyone who wants the oil extracted from above. Every pick here is a gravity drain. If you will not get under the truck at all, a topside extractor is the honest alternative — slower on a 13 qt diesel sump, but no plug work. Match the tool to the job, as in our winch sizing guide.

High-volume commercial shops. Even the rolling Lisle 19202 is a gravity tool. Shops draining trucks all day graduate to steel drains with pump evacuation, sold through dealers.

Buyers who will not handle disposal. A bigger pan concentrates used oil, and the duty to recycle it does not shrink. If sealed transport to a collection point is not a trip you will make, a shop oil change is the responsible purchase. Our how-to guides take the same line: the routine is part of the product.

FAQ

How big should an oil drain pan be for a diesel truck?

Bigger than the engine’s full oil volume, with headroom. A Power Stroke drains 13 to 15 qt with the filter, a Cummins 12 qt and a Duramax 10 qt. Our rule is capacity at least 2 qt over the engine figure, so this guide starts at 16 qt.

Will a 16 qt pan work for a 6.7 Power Stroke?

For 2011 to 2022 trucks at 13 qt, yes, with about 3 qt of headroom once the filter drains. For 2023 and later trucks listed at 15 qt, the margin is too thin. Those owners should buy the 24 qt FloTool or an 18 qt low-profile pan instead.

Open pan or closed container: which is better?

Neither, universally. Open pans catch best, sit lowest and wipe clean fastest, but they slosh when carried. Closed containers catch through a smaller basin, then seal so oil can ride to a recycler. Choose by the trip after the drain: pour on site means open, drive to recycle means closed.

How tall a pan fits under a stock heavy duty truck?

Most stock HD trucks accept the 6 to 6.25 in pans in this guide without lifting, which is why the Capri, Lisle oval and compact FloTool sit at that height. The 8 in options need a lifted truck, ramps or stands. Measure floor to plug and leave room for hand and wrench.

Can I drain two trucks into one pan?

Only if the math says so. Two Duramax drains are about 20 qt plus filter oil, which the 24 qt FloTool and 30 qt ATD handle. Two late Power Stroke drains are about 30 qt before filters, which is rolling Lisle 19202 territory.

Do I need a new crush washer at every oil change?

On trucks whose makers specify a crush washer or plug gasket, treat it as single-use. A reused washer is the common cause of the slow plug drip owners chase for weeks. Keep spares with your filters, fit one new washer per change, and torque to the manual figure.

How do I dispose of used oil legally?

Collect it in a leak-proof, labelled container, do not mix it with coolant, solvent or fuel, and take it and the drained filter to a collection point. Many auto parts stores accept used oil. Never pour it on the ground, into a drain or into household trash.

Is a drain valve worth it on a diesel truck?

For many owners, yes: a valve turns a sideways stream into a controlled flow you can hose into the pan, and it ends over-torqued plugs. The catch is fitment — thread size varies by engine, and a valve hangs slightly lower than a plug. Confirm your thread before ordering.

Why does the Capri pan in this guide come in green?

Green is Capri Tools’ anti-freeze colourway for this pan; the identical pan in black is the CP21021. The pan handles oil the same way, and owners use the green one for oil. In shared shops, label a green pan dedicated to oil, or choose the black Lisle oval.

What makes a rolling drain worth it?

Volume and weight. Sixty quarts of used oil is far beyond a safe carry, and a rolling, lidded drain turns four back-to-back drains into one pour-off. For a single truck changed twice a year, the footprint and cost are hard to justify.
