A bumper protector is a small purchase that prevents the most common damage a vehicle collects: loading scuffs on the sill, parking taps on the rear face, and shopping-cart grazes in a lot. This guide compares six protectors you can buy on Amazon, from a custom-fit topper to a hitch-mounted steel guard, and says plainly what each one does and does not cover. It sits in our Bumper Protectors section, inside Car Covers and Exterior Protection. If the bumper itself is being replaced rather than protected, start with our off-road bumper guide first.
How we researched this guide
Six bumper protectors compared, from six makers: WeatherTech, BumpTEK, BumperBoss, BumperBully, Tyger Auto and VkkArter. Four further lines were checked and set aside (the WeatherTech BumpStep line, the BumperBadger HD line, the wider BumpTek RP-53 variants, and the T-Rex wrap guard) for the reasons given in the research notes, so the six below are not six versions of the same strip.
Every specification comes from the Amazon listing for that product or from a maker or retailer document linked in Sources. Owner material is paraphrased and linked; we do not test bumper protectors, and where a listing publishes no figure the guide prints Not published instead of borrowing one from another model.
The 30-second answer
Custom fit and a factory look: the WeatherTech BumperTopper. Always-on narrow protection: the BumpTek RP-46 strip. Widest parking cover: the BumperBoss Guard. Toughest hang-on build: the BumperBully Gold. A truck or SUV with a receiver hitch: the Tyger Hitch Armor. Loading dogs, cases and gear: the VkkArter Loading Guard. Measure your bumper first, then match the job, not the widest guard, to the damage you actually get.
Best custom fit
WeatherTech BumperTopper BP0062
Best if you want a topper shaped to your own bumper: WeatherTech cuts it to the vehicle, so it sits like a factory trim piece instead of a universal strip.
Fitment note: this button is the Subaru Ascent fitment, part BP0062. Buyers with another vehicle must select their own vehicle on the listing.
Best stick-on strip
BumpTek RP Series RP-46
Best if you want always-on protection with no straps to remove: a rubber strip that sticks to the top edge of the bumper and stays there.
Best wide hang-on guard
BumperBoss Bumper Guard
Best if street parking is the daily risk: a wide foam guard that hangs over the rear face and covers far more bumper than a strip.
Best steel-reinforced guard
BumperBully Gold Edition
Best if a hang-on guard must survive repeated parking taps: steel-reinforced straps and stabilizer bars hold a rubber guard flat on the bumper.
Best hitch-mounted guard
Tyger Auto Hitch Armor TG-HS8U81238
Best if your truck or SUV already has a 2 inch receiver: a steel hitch guard that stands behind the bumper and doubles as a step.
Best loading mat
VkkArter Large Rear Bumper Guard RBG001
Best if loading is what scuffs your bumper: a foldable padded mat that covers the sill while cases, dogs and gear slide over it.

Bumper protector finder: which of these six fits your job?
Enter your rear bumper width in inches and pick the job that causes your damage. Every result names a protector from this guide with its button. A hang-on guard is not a collision device, and no result here claims one.
How to choose a bumper protector
Match the damage, not the guard
Start from the mark you already have. A scuffed sill calls for a topper or a loading mat, a dented rear face calls for a hang-on guard, and a battered hitch area calls for hitch-mounted steel. Buying the widest guard for a sill problem leaves the sill bare, and buying a strip for parking taps leaves the corners exposed.
Measure the bumper before ordering
Measure the flat top edge of the sill for a strip or topper, and the full rear face for a hang-on guard. A 46 inch strip cannot cover a 76 inch face, and a 76 inch guard will overhang a narrow car bumper and flap at speed.
Fit type decides how it lives on the car
Stick-on strips and custom toppers live on the bumper permanently and need a clean, dry surface and a warm day for the adhesive to set. Hang-on guards hang from the trunk or tailgate, so they can come off for washing but must be strapped flat or they swing. Hitch guards need a receiver and a pin, and loading mats fold away when the job is done.
Sensors, cameras and plates come first
Never cover a parking sensor, a reversing camera, a number plate or a light with a guard. Hang-on guards are the riskiest here because they drape over the rear face. Before ordering, check the sensor and camera positions on your vehicle, and after fitting, test every sensor and the camera with a helper behind the vehicle before driving in traffic.
Material sets what it can absorb
Hard plastic toppers resist scratches and keep a neat edge, rubber strips flex and absorb light contact, foam hang-on guards cushion a parking tap, and steel hitch guards stand off the bumper entirely. No material in this guide is rated as collision protection, and a foam guard will not save a bumper from a reversing vehicle at speed. Match the material to light, repeated contact, not to crashes.
Removal, cleaning and resale
Think about the day the guard comes off. Adhesive strips and toppers can leave residue and can lift weak paint on an older respray, so test a corner first on a repainted bumper. Hang-on guards and mats leave no adhesive behind but can trap grit underneath, so lift and clean beneath them regularly.
Bumper protectors by budget
| Tier | What you get | Example pick |
|---|---|---|
| Simplest cover | A narrow strip that lives on the sill and stops loading scuffs | BumpTek RP-46 |

| Loading and pet use | A padded mat that covers sill and cargo edge for dogs and gear | VkkArter Loading Guard |
| Custom-fit finish | A vehicle-shaped topper that looks fitted rather than added on | WeatherTech BumperTopper |
| Steel hitch protection | A receiver-mounted steel guard that also works as a step | Tyger Hitch Armor |
Types of bumper protector
| Type | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Stick-on strip | Always on, nothing to remove | Narrow cover only | Sill scuffs |

Detailed reviews: bumper protectors
Each review below follows the same order: why it is a pick, its documented specs, where it fits, its pros and watch-outs, what owners and reviewers report, who should not buy it, and what to pair it with. Unpublished figures are marked Not published throughout.
Best custom fit: WeatherTech BumperTopper BP0062
Best custom fit
Why the WeatherTech BumperTopper BP0062 is our pick
The BumperTopper is the only pick here shaped to one vehicle rather than cut to a universal width. WeatherTech describes it as custom fit for the vehicle make and model, made from impact-resistant hard plastic, and designed to hug the profile of the bumper so it reads as fitted trim rather than an add-on. It also helps cover small scuffs already on the sill, which matters on a vehicle whose bumper is already marked from loading.
WeatherTech BumperTopper BP0062 key specs
- Maker: WeatherTech
- Model / part: BP0062
- Fitment shown: Subaru Ascent
- Material: Impact-resistant hard plastic
- Thickness: 3 mm
- Fit: Vehicle-specific
- Position: Rear bumper top
- Installation: Self-adhesive (line description; see research notes)
- Warranty: Lifetime Limited Warranty (BP0062 listing)
- UPC: 787765146975
- Colour: Black
- Step rating: Not published
WeatherTech BumperTopper BP0062: fits and best for
Best for an owner who wants the sill protected without a strap, a hanging guard or a universal strip edge showing. It is not a parking guard: it covers the top of the bumper, not the rear face, so a reversing tap in a lot will miss it entirely.
WeatherTech BumperTopper BP0062 pros and watch-outs
- Shaped to the vehicle, not cut universal
- Hard plastic resists scratches from loading
- Helps cover small existing scuffs on the sill
- No straps to remove before opening the boot
- Lifetime Limited Warranty on the listing
- Covers the bumper top only, not the rear face
- One part number fits one vehicle family only
- Adhesive fitting needs a clean, dry surface
- No published step rating, so do not stand on it
WeatherTech BumperTopper BP0062: what owners report
Owner coverage for this exact fitment is thin in the sources reviewed, so this section states that plainly rather than borrowing reports from another WeatherTech line. The maker transcript linked in Sources describes the topper as hugging the bumper profile and covering small scuffs, and the maker page requires the buyer to input vehicle information before ordering, which matches the vehicle-specific warning in this review. WeatherTech BumperTopper maker page
WeatherTech BumperTopper BP0062: who should not buy
Do not buy the BumperTopper if your damage is parking taps on the rear face, or if you cannot confirm your vehicle part number. A hang-on guard covers the face, and a universal strip covers the sill without a part-number hunt. If your vehicle has no BumperTopper part number at all, the BumpTek strip below is the honest fallback for sill protection.
WeatherTech BumperTopper BP0062: pair it with
Pair it with a loading mat for the days the load is heavy or dirty: the topper guards the sill edge, while the VkkArter mat below covers the sill and cargo floor together during the load itself.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: fit the topper on a warm, dry day after washing and fully drying the sill, and leave it undisturbed while the adhesive sets. See our winch cover guide for the same clean-and-dry discipline on exterior covers.
Best stick-on strip: BumpTek RP Series RP-46
Best stick-on strip
Why the BumpTek RP Series RP-46 is our pick
The RP-46 is the simplest honest answer in this guide: a rubber strip, 46 inches long, that sticks to the bumper and stays there. BumpTEK calls the material Proprietary Impact Flex Rubber, and the strip form means there is nothing to hang, strap or remove before a load.
BumpTek RP Series RP-46 key specs
- Maker: BumpTEK
- Model / part: RP-46 (part BTK on listing)
- Material: Proprietary Impact Flex Rubber
- Size: 46 in long x 2.75 in wide
- Thickness: Not published on the RP-46 listing
- Fit: Vehicle-specific (listing field)
- Surface: Bumper
- Installation: Stick-on
- Warranty: Not published on the listing excerpt
- UPC: 890701002737
- Colour: Black
- Finish: Not published on the RP-46 listing
BumpTek RP Series RP-46: fits and best for
Best for a car or SUV whose sill is the wear point and whose owner wants to fit protection once and forget it. Measure the flat top edge of your sill first: 46 inches covers most car sills, but a wide SUV or truck sill may need the strip centred on the wear zone rather than edge to edge, or a wider guard instead.
BumpTek RP Series RP-46 pros and watch-outs
- Always on, nothing to hang or remove
- Rubber flexes with light contact instead of cracking
- Narrow profile suits a sill without changing the look much
- Simple stick-on fitting with no receiver or straps
- Covers the sill edge only, not the face or corners
- Straight strip cannot follow a tight bumper curve
- Thickness and warranty not published on the listing
- Adhesive fitting risks residue on a repainted bumper
BumpTek RP Series RP-46: what owners report
Owner coverage for the RP-46 specifically is thin in the sources reviewed, and this review does not borrow star ratings or review text from the listing. AutoQuarterly bumper guard roundup is a useful background read on guard types; verify the RP-46 width against your own sill before ordering.
BumpTek RP Series RP-46: who should not buy
Do not buy the RP-46 if your bumper face takes parking taps, if your sill is much wider than 46 inches, or if your bumper top is sharply curved. The BumperBoss Guard below covers the face, and the VkkArter mat covers a wide sill during loading without any adhesive at all.
BumpTek RP Series RP-46: pair it with
Pair it with the VkkArter loading mat on heavy-load days: the strip guards the sill permanently, and the mat adds padded cover while a case or dog actually crosses it.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: clean the sill with soap and water, dry it fully, and test a small corner first if the bumper has ever been repainted. Our maintenance checklist covers the same inspect-before-you-trust habit for exterior gear.
Best wide hang-on guard: BumperBoss Bumper Guard
Best wide hang-on guard
Why the BumperBoss Bumper Guard is our pick
The BumperBoss Guard is the widest hang-on guard in this guide at 76 inches wide and 8 inches tall, in polyurethane foam 9 mm thick. That size is the point: most parking damage lands somewhere across the rear face, not neatly in the middle, and a 76 inch guard covers the face and reaches toward the corners where a strip cannot.
BumperBoss Bumper Guard key specs
- Maker: BumperBoss
- Model / part: BBS-TX
- Material: Polyurethane (PU) foam
- Size: 76 in wide x 8 in tall
- Thickness: 9 mm
- Fit: Universal
- Surface: Bumper
- Installation: Hang-on with straps
- Warranty: Not published on the listing excerpt
- UPC: 890701002614
- Colour: Silver (listing variant shown)
- Finish: Foam
BumperBoss Bumper Guard: fits and best for
Best for street-parked cars and SUVs whose rear face collects taps, cart grazes and parallel-parking contact. It suits a wide rear face best; on a narrow car bumper the ends will overhang, so measure the face and expect some overhang to be trimmed or folded by the strap positions rather than assumed away.
BumperBoss Bumper Guard pros and watch-outs
- Widest hang-on cover in this guide
- Foam cushions a parking tap instead of passing it on
- Universal fit, no part-number search
- Removable for washing and long runs
- Must be strapped flat or it can swing and flap
- Can cover sensors, cameras, plates or lights if placed carelessly
- Foam is a cushion, not collision protection
- Warranty not published on the listing
BumperBoss Bumper Guard: what owners report
Owner coverage for this exact part number is thin in the sources reviewed, so no owner claim is invented here. What the listing itself documents is the size, the foam construction and the universal fit, and those three facts are the whole basis for this pick. AutoExpro bumper guard roundup gives the type background; the fit check on your own vehicle is still yours to do.
BumperBoss Bumper Guard: who should not buy
Do not buy the BumperBoss Guard if your bumper is narrow enough that 76 inches overhangs badly, if your sensors or camera sit in the guard zone and cannot be left clear, or if your damage is only on the sill. The BumpTek strip covers a sill, and the WeatherTech topper covers it neatly, without draping anything over the face.
BumperBoss Bumper Guard: pair it with
Pair it with a sill strip for a vehicle that suffers both jobs: the guard covers the face in the lot, and the BumpTek RP-46 below guards the sill during loading.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: after fitting, test every parking sensor and the reversing camera with a helper behind the vehicle before driving in traffic. See our hitch versus bumper mount guide for how rear-face accessories interact with vehicle hardware.
Best steel-reinforced guard: BumperBully Gold Edition
Best steel-reinforced guard
Why the BumperBully Gold Edition is our pick
The BumperBully Gold Edition is the hang-on guard for a driver who has already watched a foam guard wear out or shift. Its listing gives alloy steel and rubber construction, a model number BBULLY-3CM, and an outer rear position, and secondary guides describe steel-reinforced straps and stabilizer bars that keep the guard flat against the bumper. The listing does not publish a size, so this review does not quote one, and buyers should confirm the covered area against their own bumper before ordering.
BumperBully Gold Edition key specs
- Maker: BumperBully
- Model / part: BBULLY (model BBULLY-3CM)
- Material: Alloy steel and rubber
- Size: Not published on the Amazon listing
- Fit: Universal
- Position: Outer, rear
- Vehicle type: Cars (listing field)
- Installation: Hang-on with straps
- Warranty: Not published on the listing excerpt
- Colour: Gold
- Stabilizer bars: Described in secondary guides
- Impact rating: Not published
BumperBully Gold Edition: fits and best for
Best for a car that lives in street parking and takes repeated light taps, where a guard that stays put matters more than the widest possible cover. It is a car-oriented listing, so truck and large SUV owners should measure carefully and not assume the same coverage as the 76 inch BumperBoss above.
BumperBully Gold Edition pros and watch-outs
- Steel-reinforced straps resist cutting and shifting
- Stabilizer bars hold the guard flat on the bumper
- Rubber face cushions light parking contact
- Removable when the vehicle is not parked in a risky spot
- Size not published on the listing, so coverage must be confirmed
- Car-oriented listing, not a confirmed truck fit
- Hang-on form can still cover sensors if placed badly
- No published impact rating, so no collision claim is made
BumperBully Gold Edition: what owners report
This pick has the best secondary coverage of any hang-on guard in the guide. The Truth About Cars bumper guard roundup describes the Gold Edition as a large guard with steel-reinforced straps and stabilizer bars, and BestReviews bumper guard guide notes the flat-against-the-bumper design for parking use.
BumperBully Gold Edition: who should not buy
Do not buy the BumperBully Gold if you need a published size before ordering, if your vehicle is a large truck or SUV whose face is far wider than a car guard, or if your damage is on the sill. The BumperBoss Guard publishes its 76 inch width, and the BumpTek strip covers a sill without any hanging hardware.
BumperBully Gold Edition: pair it with
Pair it with a loading mat for the loading job it does not do: the guard stays on the face in the lot, and the VkkArter mat below covers the sill while gear crosses it.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: check the straps and stabilizer bars each time the guard goes back on, and look for grit trapped behind it. Our recovery kit guide covers the same check-straps-before-you-trust-them discipline.
Best hitch-mounted guard: Tyger Auto Hitch Armor TG-HS8U81238
Best hitch-mounted guard
Why the Tyger Auto Hitch Armor TG-HS8U81238 is our pick
The Tyger Hitch Armor is the only pick here that stands off the bumper instead of lying on it. It slides into a 2 inch hitch receiver, uses a dual girder system with 2 inch diameter tubes at 0.120 inch wall thickness, and ships with a pin lock and a stabilizer, according to its listing. That construction gives two uses at once: a guard that takes a low-speed tap before the bumper does, and a step for reaching a roof load or a truck bed. It is not collision protection, and it is useless without a receiver, so both limits are stated here rather than discovered after purchase.
Tyger Auto Hitch Armor TG-HS8U81238 key specs
- Maker: Tyger Auto
- Model / part: TG-HS8U81238
- Material: Carbon steel
- Finish: Textured powder-coated
- Receiver: 2 in hitch receiver
- Tube: 2 in diameter, 0.120 in wall (listing description)
- Includes: Pin lock and stabilizer
- Item weight: 9 kg
- Warranty: Lifetime (manufacturer description on listing)
- UPC: 816239024454
- Vehicle types: Truck, SUV, RV (listing field)
- Impact rating: Not published
Tyger Auto Hitch Armor TG-HS8U81238: fits and best for
Best for a truck, SUV or RV that already has a 2 inch receiver and whose rear bumper takes taps in lots, on trails or at a loading dock. It suits a vehicle that also needs a rear step, because the step use is real and documented, not an afterthought.
Tyger Auto Hitch Armor TG-HS8U81238 pros and watch-outs
- Stands off the bumper instead of covering it
- Carbon steel with a textured powder-coated finish
- Pin lock and stabilizer included on the listing
- Doubles as a step for roof and bed access
- Lifetime manufacturer warranty description
- Needs a 2 inch receiver, so cars without one cannot use it
- No published impact rating, so no collision claim
- Adds weight and length behind the vehicle
- Must be inspected after any impact before stepping on it
Tyger Auto Hitch Armor TG-HS8U81238: what owners report
Owner coverage for this exact part number is thin in the sources reviewed, and this review does not invent it. The listing description itself documents the dual girder design, the pin lock and the stabilizer, and the hitch-step instruction sheet linked in Sources warns that a step after an impact must be inspected before further use. Hitch step installation instructions (CARiD mirror)
Tyger Auto Hitch Armor TG-HS8U81238: who should not buy
Do not buy the Tyger Hitch Armor if your vehicle has no 2 inch receiver, if you need a guard that covers the full rear face, or if you want a step you can stand on without ever inspecting it. A hang-on guard covers the face, and a receiver must be fitted first for any hitch-mounted option.
Tyger Auto Hitch Armor TG-HS8U81238: pair it with
Pair it with a loading mat for the sill job: the armor guards the rear face and hitch area, while the VkkArter mat below covers the sill edge that the armor never touches.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: torque and pin-check the hitch hardware before the first trip, and re-check it after any contact. Our winch mounting plate guide covers the same receiver-and-hardware inspection habit.
Best loading mat: VkkArter Large Rear Bumper Guard RBG001
Best loading mat
Why the VkkArter Large Rear Bumper Guard RBG001 is our pick
The VkkArter guard is the loading specialist of this guide: a foldable mat, 38 inches by 25 inches, that covers the sill and the cargo edge while a load crosses it, then folds away. Its listing describes 600D Oxford cloth with 5 mm pearl cotton padding, and lists cars, SUVs, trucks and vans as vehicle types, so it is the broadest fitment here. It is not a parking guard, because it is only deployed for a load, and it will not protect a rear face left exposed in a lot.
VkkArter Large Rear Bumper Guard RBG001 key specs
- Maker: VkkArter
- Model / part: RBG001
- Material: Polyester and polyethylene (PE) on listing; 600D Oxford cloth with 5 mm pearl cotton padding (description)
- Size: 38 in x 25 in
- Fit: Universal
- Vehicle types: Car, SUV, truck, van
- Position: Rear
- Form: Foldable trunk mat
- Item weight: 1.29 lb
- Warranty: Two Years Replacement Guarantee (listing wording)
- Colour: Black
- Waterproof rating: Not published
VkkArter Large Rear Bumper Guard RBG001: fits and best for
Best for pet owners, families and workers whose bumper damage is a loading story: a dog with claws, a case with hard feet, a toolbox with sharp corners. The 38 inch width covers most trunk openings, but a wide SUV or truck opening may leave the outer sill corners exposed, so measure the opening before ordering.
VkkArter Large Rear Bumper Guard RBG001 pros and watch-outs
- Covers sill and cargo edge during the actual load
- Padded surface cushions cases, dogs and gear
- Folds away when the load is done
- Broadest vehicle fitment in this guide
- Light at 1.29 lb, so it is easy to carry and store
- Only protects while deployed, not while parked
- 38 inch width may leave wide openings partly exposed
- No published waterproof rating
- Needs unfolding and positioning for every load
VkkArter Large Rear Bumper Guard RBG001: what owners report
Owner coverage for this part number is thin in the sources reviewed, because the listing is recent, so this review states that plainly. The listing description itself documents the loading, pet-entry and wheelchair and stroller use cases, and the padding construction, and those documented uses are the basis for this pick rather than any borrowed review text.
VkkArter Large Rear Bumper Guard RBG001: who should not buy
Do not buy the VkkArter mat if your damage is parking taps on the rear face, or if you want protection that stays fitted between trips. A hang-on guard covers the face, and a stick-on strip or a custom topper covers the sill permanently. The mat is for the loading moment, and it is honest about that limit.
VkkArter Large Rear Bumper Guard RBG001: pair it with
Pair it with a permanent sill strip for between-load protection: the BumpTek RP-46 below stays on the sill, and this mat adds padding when the load is heavy or sharp.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: shake and wipe the mat after muddy or wet loads so grit does not get dragged across the sill next time. Our essential accessories guide covers the same clean-gear-before-it-touches-paint habit.

Fitment and installation
Fitment for a bumper protector is a measurement job, not a vehicle-name job. Universal guards still need a width, a sensor map and a plate check, and vehicle-specific toppers still need an exact part number. Dry-fit every guard before any adhesive sets or any strap is tightened for a journey: lay a strip along the sill, hang a guard and check its drape, slide a hitch guard into the receiver and check its clearance. Clean every adhesive surface with soap and water, dry it fully, and fit on a warm, dry day. After fitting, test parking sensors and the reversing camera with a helper, check that the number plate and lights are fully visible, and check that a hang-on guard cannot swing into an exhaust tip. For the wider question of what else bolts to the rear of a vehicle, see our how to install a winch on a truck, our how to mount a winch on a truck and our how to install a rear winch on a truck.
Safety essentials
Never cover a parking sensor, reversing camera, number plate or light with any guard.
Never present a bumper protector as collision protection; none in this guide carries a published impact rating.
Inspect a hitch guard for cracks after any contact before stepping on it or loading it again.
Keep a hang-on guard strapped flat; a swinging guard is a hazard to paint, sensors and following traffic.
Keep exhaust tips clear of any guard material, and check for heat damage after a long run.
Remove a guard that traps grit, water or road salt against paint, clean beneath it, and refit it dry.
The three accessories below are not bumper protectors. They are recovery accessories for a vehicle that also carries recovery gear, included because a hitch guard on a truck often travels with a recovery kit. Each has its own verified button from the brief pool.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Strip lifting at the ends | Curved sill or dirty surface | Refit on a clean, dry, warm sill; centre it on the flat section |
| Guard swinging at speed | Straps loose or uneven | Re-strap flat and evenly; remove it for a long fast run if it still moves |
| Sensor false alarms | Guard over a sensor | Move the guard clear of the sensor and re-test with a helper |
| Camera view blocked | Guard draped over the lens | Reposition or remove the guard; never drive with a blocked camera |
| Hitch guard rattling | Loose pin or no stabilizer | Refit the pin lock and stabilizer and re-check before driving |
| Grit marks under a guard | Trapped dirt rubbing paint | Lift the guard, clean beneath it, and refit it dry |
Who should NOT buy these
Drivers expecting crash protection should not buy any of these. No pick here carries a published impact rating, and a foam or rubber guard will not save a bumper from a road-speed collision. A replacement bumper, not a protector, is the answer to crash damage, and our off-road bumper guide is the starting point for that job.
Owners with sensor-heavy rear bumpers should not buy a hang-on guard blind. If sensors, cameras and driver-assist hardware fill the rear face, a draped guard risks blocking them. A topper or a strip on the sill, or a hitch guard that stands clear of the face, is the safer route, and every sensor must be re-tested after fitting.
Drivers who will not measure should not buy a universal guard. A 76 inch guard on a narrow car, a 46 inch strip on a wide truck sill, and a hitch guard without a receiver are all predictable disappointments. Measure the sill and the face, check the receiver size, and confirm the part number before ordering.
Anyone with a freshly resprayed bumper should pause before adhesive. Stick-on strips and toppers can lift weak paint and leave residue, so test a corner, wait for a full cure, and prefer a hang-on guard or a mat until the paint is fully hardened.

FAQ
Do bumper protectors fit any car?
No. Universal guards still need a width and a sensor check, and custom-fit toppers need an exact part number for your vehicle. Measure the sill for a strip or topper, measure the full rear face for a hang-on guard, and confirm the receiver size for any hitch guard before ordering.
Will a bumper protector stop parking damage?
It helps with light, low-speed contact: a foam or rubber guard cushions a parking tap, and a topper or mat stops loading scuffs on the sill. It will not stop a road-speed collision, and no pick in this guide carries a published impact rating.
What is the difference between a strip, a guard and a mat?
A strip is a narrow rubber or plastic piece stuck to the sill edge and left there permanently. A guard hangs over the rear face and protects against parking taps, and it can usually be removed. A mat is a padded cover unfolded for a load, covering sill and cargo edge, then folded away.
Do hang-on bumper guards block parking sensors?
They can, which is why placement matters more than the guard itself. A guard draped over a sensor will cause false alarms, and one over a camera or number plate is a safety and legal problem. Before fitting, map every sensor, camera, plate and light, keep the guard clear of all of them, and test the sensors and camera with a helper.
Can I leave a bumper protector on all the time?
Strips and toppers are designed to stay on, and hang-on guards can stay on for daily parking use, but every guard should be lifted and cleaned beneath regularly. Trapped grit, water and road salt will mark paint over time. Hitch guards can stay fitted, but check the pin and stabilizer before each trip, and inspect any hitch guard for cracks after contact before stepping on it.
Will an adhesive bumper strip damage my paint?
On sound factory paint, a properly fitted strip should not, but it can leave residue when removed, and it can lift weak or freshly resprayed paint. Clean and dry the surface before fitting, test a small corner first on any repainted bumper, and wait until a respray is fully cured before fitting adhesive protection. If in doubt, choose a hang-on guard or a loading mat instead.
Do I need a hitch receiver for a bumper guard?
Only for hitch-mounted guards such as the Tyger Armor in this guide, which needs a 2 inch receiver. Stick-on strips, custom toppers, hang-on guards and loading mats need no receiver at all. Do not buy a hitch guard hoping to fit a receiver later unless that receiver job is already planned, because the guard cannot be used at all until the receiver exists.
Are bumper protectors worth it for a leased vehicle?
Often yes, because the damage they prevent is exactly the scuff and tap damage that shows up at return: sill scuffs from loading and rear-face marks from parking. A topper or strip that covers the sill, or a removable hang-on guard for parking, can keep the bumper presentable.
How do I clean under a bumper protector?
Lift or remove the guard, wash the bumper and the back of the guard with soap and water, dry both fully, and refit only when dry. Do this regularly in winter and after muddy loads, because grit trapped behind a guard is itself a paint hazard.
