Every winch in this guide is 4,500 lb, and that is deliberate: a loaded RZR runs 1,700–2,100 lb, the × 1.5 rule puts the floor near 3,150 lb, and mud headroom does the rest. The previous version of this guide also recommended a 3,000 lb winch whose specs cannot be verified anywhere and a 3,500 lb ATV winch — both are gone, and the reasons are printed in the sizing section. What remains is the honest RZR set: two WARNs, Polaris’s own OEM winch, an XP 1000 kit with its plate in the box, and two value picks with real spec sheets.
How we researched: WARN, Polaris, SuperATV, KFI and Champion specifications matched to exact model numbers, plus owner reports from RZR and UTV forums and verified-buyer reviews. We do not test winches. Where a maker publishes no figure — WARN publishes no horsepower for the VRX/AXON — the table says so. The wider UTV picture is our best UTV winch guide.
Short answer: the WARN AXON 45-S is the RZR winch to buy — IP68, integrated digital controls, synthetic line. The Polaris PRO HD 4500 is the painless OEM route, and XP 1000 owners who want winch and plate in one box should take the SuperATV kit.

Sizing and fitment: the two RZR questions
Sizing. Even the heaviest loaded RZR lands under a 4,500 lb winch’s working range once the × 1.5 rule is run honestly — which is why sub-4,500 winches have no place here: a 3,000 lb winch fails the rule for every RZR except an unloaded lightest Trail, and the 3,500 lb class belongs to ATVs (our ATV guide covers them there). Heavily built Pro R/Turbo R machines at the top of the weight range are the one step-up case — the calculator routes them to the 6,000 lb class in our UTV guide.
Fitment. RZRs need model-specific mounting plates, and Polaris’s own winch part numbers change by model family (XP, Turbo S, Pro R and Trail each take different kits). Two picks below are kits with the plate included — the SuperATV bundle fits the 2019–23 XP 1000 family only, and the Polaris winch is an integrated-mount kit whose variant must match your model. Universal winches (the WARNs, KFI, Champion) need the correct plate bought separately — order plate and winch together, or the install waits a week on a delivery.
Recovery safety: a stuck RZR on a side slope can roll toward the anchor. Winch from a stable position, keep passengers clear of the line path, and use the wireless/dash controls from outside the machine where the kit provides them.
1. WARN AXON 45-S — Best Overall
The AXON 45-S sat in the old guide’s FAQ and nowhere else, which was a waste of the best RZR winch here: WARN’s Motactor design (motor and contactor in one sealed unit), a digital Rockerbar switch and corded remote that report load and temperature, IP68 sealing and Spydura synthetic line. It is the modern, complete package at exactly the RZR class.
| Rated pull | 4,500 lb |
| Motor | Motactor integrated motor + digital contactor; horsepower not published |
| Gear ratio | 239:1, 3-stage planetary |
| Rope | Spydura synthetic, 50 ft x 1/4 in, Epic hawse fairlead |
| Sealing | IP68 |
| Controls | Rockerbar digital switch + digital corded remote (load/temperature feedback) |
| Max draw | 208 A at full pull |
| Weight | Not published |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime mechanical / 3-year electrical |
Pros
- Most complete controls package here
- IP68 + WARN warranty
- Digital load/temperature feedback
Watch-outs
- Premium price
- Mounting plate separate
- No HUB wireless receiver variant at this size in the box (the 55-S has it)
What owners say: Owner coverage for the AXON line is summarised in our UTV guide — compact, light, fair pricing, bring your own plate. RZR-specific AXON threads are still thin, and we say so rather than borrow verdicts.
2. WARN VRX 45 (Steel) — Best Steel-Cable
The steel-cable VRX 45 is the synthetic 45-S’s sibling (our ATV guide’s proven pick) with a 50 ft steel line and roller fairlead. For RZRs that live in rock country — where rope meets sharp edges daily — steel is the defensible choice, and this is the only steel WARN in the guide. WARN publishes no horsepower for it; anyone who quotes you ~1.8 hp is reading a retailer data feed, not WARN.
| Rated pull | 4,500 lb |
| Motor | Permanent magnet; horsepower not published by WARN |
| Gear ratio | 198:1, 3-stage planetary |
| Rope | Steel, 50 ft x 1/4 in, roller fairlead |
| Sealing | IP68 |
| Controls | Dash rocker + corded remote |
| Brake | Mechanical load-holding |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime mechanical / 3-year electrical |
Pros
- Steel line for abrasive terrain
- IP68 + WARN warranty
- Same proven VRX platform as the 45-S
Watch-outs
- Steel line weight and handling
- Plate separate
- No wireless in the box
What owners say: A Rocky Mountain ATV/MC verified buyer reviewing the VRX wire-rope winch with its mount-plate kit reports the install went as planned, the winch works, and he would recommend it — retailer-review level evidence, labelled as such.
3. Polaris PRO HD 4500 (Rapid Rope Recovery) — Best OEM
Polaris’s own winch is the integration play: pre-wired, integrated mount, an Auto Stop fairlead that halts the line before the hook arrives, and Rapid Rope Recovery, which re-spools about five times faster at no load — the feature owners actually feel every ride. Two honest notes: Polaris publishes no IP number (“fully sealed, operates submerged” is the claim, printed as a claim), and the correct part number varies by RZR model — match the kit to your machine, not to this page.
| Rated pull | 4,500 lb |
| Motor | 1.6 hp |
| Gear ratio | Not published |
| Rope | Synthetic, 50 ft |
| Features | Rapid Rope Recovery (~5x no-load re-spool), Auto Stop fairlead |
| Sealing | Fully sealed motor/gears; no IP number published |
| Controls | Wireless remote (50 ft range) |
| Mounting | Integrated mount included (model-specific kit) |
| Kit weight | ~31 lb |
| Warranty | 1 year (Polaris accessories) |
Pros
- Factory integration: pre-wired, mount included
- Rapid Rope Recovery is a real quality-of-life feature
- Auto Stop protects the fairlead
Watch-outs
- Model-specific part numbers — verify fitment
- 1-year warranty
- No published IP rating or gear ratio
What owners say: Owner coverage is thin: the strongest report found is a mirrored owner review calling it a great winch with a quick retracting gear and dependable service. Polaris sells a great many of these; the forum record has not caught up, and we print that honestly.
4. SuperATV Black Ops 4500 + XP 1000 Plate Kit — Best Kit for XP 1000
This listing is a KIT, and the guide flags it as one: the Black Ops 4500 winch bundled with SuperATV’s mounting plate for the 2019–23 RZR XP 1000 and XP 4 1000. If that is your machine, it removes the plate hunt entirely. If it is not, buy the bare winch from our UTV guide and your model’s plate separately — this plate will not fit.
| Rated pull | 4,500 lb |
| Motor | 1.3 hp permanent magnet |
| Gear ratio | 166:1 |
| Rope | Synthetic, 50 ft |
| Sealing | Waterproof seals + solenoid; no IP number published |
| Controls | Wireless remote + dash rocker |
| Kit fitment | RZR XP 1000 / XP 4 1000, 2019–23 (plate included) |
| Weight | Not published |
| Warranty | 1 year |
Pros
- Winch + correct plate in one box (for the named models)
- Wireless included
- Exact-fit convenience
Watch-outs
- Plate fits the XP 1000 family only
- No published IP rating or weight
- 1-year warranty
What owners say: Black Ops owner sentiment is covered in our UTV guide: easy installs praised, a minority reporting remote trouble and solenoid replacements. SuperATV’s own RZR install guides document the kit format.
5. KFI SE45-R2 Stealth — Best Value
KFI’s Stealth is the value pick with a real spec sheet: 1.7 hp, all-metal planetary gears, a dash switch and a 14 ft corded remote, at 33.65 lb for the complete kit. Its one paper weakness is line length — 38 ft of synthetic where the WARNs carry 50 — which matters on long mud pulls and not at all on short ones. KFI publishes no IP rating (“water-resistant seals”), and the model-specific RZR mount is a separate purchase.
| Rated pull | 4,500 lb |
| Motor | 1.7 hp permanent magnet |
| Gear ratio | 166:1, all-metal planetary |
| Rope | Synthetic, 38 ft x 15/64 in (with 5 ft protective sheath) |
| Fairlead | Multi-directional roller (POM) |
| Sealing | Water-resistant seals; no IP number published |
| Controls | Dash switch + 14 ft corded remote |
| Mounting pattern | 3.00 in x 4.875 in (model-specific RZR mount sold separately) |
| Weight | 33.65 lb (complete kit) |
| Warranty | 1-year limited |
Pros
- Full published spec sheet
- Corded remote + dash switch both included
- Complete-kit weight is reasonable
Watch-outs
- Short 38 ft line
- 1-year warranty
- Mount sold separately
What owners say: A NC Hunt and Fish owner self-installed a KFI Stealth and calls it pretty much plug and play, with another owner in the thread vouching for its reliability; on RME4x4, an owner running 4,500 lb KFI units on Teryx4s sums them up as slow and noisy but working every time — which, for a value winch, is the review that matters.
6. Champion 4500 Wireless Kit (14560) — Best Budget
Champion’s kit closes the list as the budget door: a 4,500 lb winch with wireless remote and mini-rocker, steel cable and a 2-year warranty, at the lowest price pattern here. It is also a multiple-guide veteran — top of our ATV plowing research as an accessory pairing and a pick in the 4,500 lb class guide — with one honest gap: RZR-specific owner coverage is thin.
| Rated pull | 4,500 lb |
| Motor | 1.6 hp permanent magnet |
| Gear ratio | 180:1, 3-stage planetary |
| Rope | Steel, 38 ft x 15/64 in, roller fairlead |
| Controls | Wireless remote (~50 ft) + mini-rocker |
| Brake | Dynamic |
| Weight | ~19.7 lb |
| Warranty | 2-year limited |
Pros
- Lowest price here
- Wireless included
- 2-year warranty
Watch-outs
- Short, thin steel line
- RZR-specific owner coverage is thin
- Plate separate
What owners say: Champion’s broader owner record is covered in our ATV guide. For RZRs specifically we found no substantial owner thread, and the pick stands on its spec sheet and price — stated plainly.
RZR winch FAQ
What size winch does a Polaris RZR need?
4,500 lb for practically every RZR: loaded weights run 1,700–2,100 lb, and the × 1.5 rule plus mud headroom lands on that class. The calculator above runs your machine; the heaviest builds route to 6,000 lb.
Why is there no 3,500 lb winch in this guide?
Because an RZR is not an ATV. Sub-4,500 lb winches fail the × 1.5 rule on loaded RZR weights; the older version’s 3,000 and 3,500 lb entries were removed for exactly that reason.
Do I need a mounting plate?
Yes, unless you buy a kit that includes one (the SuperATV bundle for XP 1000 models, or Polaris’s integrated kits). Plates are model-specific — confirm your RZR’s plate before ordering.
OEM Polaris winch or aftermarket?
The PRO HD’s pre-wiring, integrated mount and Rapid Rope Recovery are genuinely convenient. Aftermarket WARNs answer with IP68 sealing and far longer warranties. Both are defensible; the indefensible choice is an undersized winch of any brand.
Wireless or dash controls?
Wireless lets you stand clear of the line path, which is where you should be. Every pick here offers wireless or a corded remote long enough to work from outside the machine.
Our verdict
Buy the AXON 45-S for the best RZR winch outright, the VRX 45 steel for rock country, and the Polaris PRO HD for factory convenience. XP 1000 owners get the SuperATV kit; value buyers get the KFI Stealth or the Champion kit. All six are the same honest class — because on an RZR, 4,500 lb is not a marketing tier, it is the maths.
