Six winches, one number: 4,500 lb is the hardest-working class in powersports winching — standard on RZRs, working UTVs and big quads alike — and this guide exists to separate the six honest versions of it. First, a confession about the previous edition: its #1 pick’s text reviewed the 4,500 lb Superwinch Terra 45SR while its buy link pointed at the 3,500 lb steel-cable Terra 35. Same family, wrong winch, 1,000 lb short. The link is fixed below, and the guide now checks every pick’s link against its own text. Riders cross-shopping quads should also read our combined 4500 lb ATV/UTV winch guide and the full UTV winch guide.
How we researched: WARN, Superwinch, SuperATV, Champion and MotoAlliance specifications matched to exact model numbers, plus owner reports from UTV forums. We do not test winches. One older link in this guide could not be tied to any product at all and was removed unnamed; the Viper slot below carries its own paperwork caveat, printed in its section.
Short answer: the WARN AXON 45-S is the best 4,500 lb UTV winch — IP68, integrated digital controls, 50 ft of Spydura. The VRX 45-S is the proven alternative, the Terra 45SR the established value, and the Champion kit the budget door.

Enter your UTV’s loaded weight (machine + passengers + fuel + cargo + accessories). We multiply it by 1.5 — if the answer is above 4,500 lb, this class is too small and we will point you up a class.

How our score works: sealing 20% · controls 15% · line length and type 15% · published-spec honesty 20% · warranty 15% · owner feedback 15%. All picks are 4,500 lb, so capacity does not separate them — the details do. Our Score is editorial judgement based on published specs and owner reports, not test results.
What actually separates six 4,500 lb winches
Line length: 50 ft (both WARNs, Terra, Black Ops) vs 40 ft (Viper) vs 38 ft (Champion) — on a long mud pull the short lines run out first. Sealing: the WARNs publish IP68 and MotoAlliance publishes IP67; Superwinch claims IP67 in its Terra literature; SuperATV and Champion publish no number at all, and this guide will not invent one. Controls: the AXON’s digital switch reports load and temperature; the Black Ops and Champion include wireless remotes; the Viper pairs wireless with a rocker. Warranty: from WARN’s lifetime/3-year down to SuperATV’s single year. Same badge number, six different ownership experiences — that is the guide.
Recovery safety: 4,500 lb is a rating for the first drum layer with the vehicle as anchor and load at once. Chock, use frame anchor points, keep the line path empty, and remember the winch’s rating assumes the rope is nearly fully spooled out — short, full-drum pulls deliver far less.
1. WARN AXON 45-S — Best Overall
The AXON 45-S leads the class for the same reason its 55-S sibling leads our UTV guide: the Motactor unit, IP68 sealing, digital controls with load and temperature feedback, and the strongest warranty paperwork in powersports. Full treatment in our RZR guide, where it is also the top pick.
| Rated pull | 4,500 lb |
| Motor | Motactor integrated motor + digital contactor; horsepower not published |
| Gear ratio | 239:1, 3-stage planetary |
| Rope | Spydura synthetic, 50 ft x 1/4 in, Epic hawse fairlead |
| Sealing | IP68 |
| Controls | Rockerbar digital switch + digital corded remote + HUB wireless receiver |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime mechanical / 3-year electrical |
Pros
- Best controls and feedback here
- IP68
- Lifetime/3-year warranty
Watch-outs
- Premium price
- Mounting plate separate
What owners say: Covered in our UTV guide — compact and light per owners, with the mounting plate the standing extra purchase.
2. WARN VRX 45-S — Best Proven
The VRX 45-S is the most proven 4,500 lb winch in existence across this site’s research: top of our ATV guide, the Can-Am OEM accessory, IP68, and WARN’s warranty. If the AXON’s digital layer is more than you want, this is the class’s reference winch.
| Rated pull | 4,500 lb |
| Gear ratio | 198:1 |
| Rope | Synthetic, 50 ft x 1/4 in |
| Sealing | IP68 |
| Motor | Not published |
| Warranty | Lifetime mechanical / 3-year electrical |
Pros
- Deepest owner record in the class
- IP68 + warranty
- The OEM choice (Can-Am)
Watch-outs
- No wireless in the box
- Plate separate
What owners say: Covered in depth in our ATV winch guide — the strongest owner record of any winch here.
3. Superwinch Terra 45SR — Best Established Value
The Terra 45SR is the pick whose own link this guide once got wrong, so its identity is stated twice: model 1145230, the 4,500 lb synthetic-rope Terra. It earns its slot on a light 19 lb installed weight, a 191:1 reduction and a long retail record. Two paperwork notes from our UTV research: the IP67 figure is Superwinch’s marketing language rather than a certified spec-sheet rating, and the rope is 50 ft per the spec sheet despite some retailers printing 55 ft. Availability has been spotty since Superwinch moved under Westin.
| Rated pull | 4,500 lb |
| Motor | 1.6 hp permanent magnet |
| Gear ratio | 191:1 |
| Rope | Synthetic, 50 ft x 1/4 in (spec sheet; some retailers print 55 ft) |
| Sealing | Maker claims IP67 sealing |
| Weight | 19 lb installed |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime mechanical / 3-year electrical (retailer spec blocks) |
Pros
- Lightest pick here
- Established value
- Synthetic line standard
Watch-outs
- Availability spotty
- IP67 is a claim, not a certification
What owners say: Owner reports are carried in our UTV guide: a straightforward Pioneer 1000-5 install (longer bolts helped) balanced against seal-shedding reports on some Terra units.
4. SuperATV Black Ops 4500 — Best Wireless Kit
The Black Ops 4500 is the wireless-included value of the class: sealed solenoid, dash rocker and a 50 ft-range wireless remote, with SuperATV’s UTV-first fitment knowledge behind it. Its paperwork is the thinnest of the named brands — no IP number, no published weight, one year of warranty — and the guide prints all three absences rather than filling them.
| Rated pull | 4,500 lb |
| Motor | 1.3 hp permanent magnet |
| Gear ratio | 166:1 |
| Rope | Synthetic, 50 ft |
| Sealing | Waterproof seals + solenoid; no IP number published |
| Controls | Wireless remote (50 ft range) + dash rocker |
| Weight | Not published |
| Warranty | 1 year |
Pros
- Wireless included at a mid price
- UTV-focused maker
- Sealed package
Watch-outs
- No published IP or weight
- 1-year warranty
- Some remote/solenoid owner reports
What owners say: Mirrored owner reviews praise the easy install; a minority report wireless-remote trouble and solenoid replacements — the full picture is in our UTV guide.
5. Champion 4500 Wireless Kit (14560) — Best Budget
Champion’s wireless kit is the budget benchmark of the 4,500 class: steel cable, a wireless remote and a 2-year warranty at the class’s friendliest price, from a maker whose kits anchor several of our guides. The 38 ft line is its real compromise — fine for plow-adjacent and short pulls, short for long mud work.
| Rated pull | 4,500 lb |
| Motor | 1.6 hp permanent magnet |
| Gear ratio | 180:1, 3-stage planetary |
| Rope | Steel, 38 ft x 15/64 in, roller fairlead |
| Controls | Wireless remote (~50 ft) + mini-rocker |
| Brake | Dynamic |
| Weight | ~19.7 lb |
| Warranty | 2-year limited |
Pros
- Lowest price in the class
- Wireless included
- 2-year warranty
Watch-outs
- Short 38 ft steel line
- No published sealing figure
What owners say: Champion kit owners are covered in our ATV guide, where this kit is the wireless value pick for quads as well.
6. MotoAlliance VIPER V2 4500 — Best Rope Spec
MotoAlliance’s Viper line has sold 4,500 lb winches to UTV owners for a decade, and the current V2 carries the best rope specification here: 40 ft of genuine AmSteel-Blue. Its paperwork needs the guide’s plainest caveat: MotoAlliance publishes IP67 and a lifetime winch warranty for the V2, but the current Amazon listing’s own part-number field is internally inconsistent (it carries a 6000-series code) — verify the listing title says V2 4500 before ordering, and treat the slot as the one pick to double-check at checkout. The older Viper Elite link this guide used to carry could not be verified at all and was removed.
| Rated pull | 4,500 lb |
| Motor | Sealed permanent magnet; horsepower not published |
| Gear ratio | 136:1 |
| Rope | AmSteel-Blue synthetic, 40 ft x 1/4 in |
| Sealing | IP67 (maker) |
| Controls | Wireless remote + rocker switch |
| Mounting pattern | 3.0 in x 4.875 in |
| Weight | ~20 lb |
| Warranty | Limited lifetime (winch) / 1 year (rope), per maker |
Pros
- AmSteel-Blue rope standard
- IP67 published by maker
- Lifetime winch warranty (maker)
Watch-outs
- Listing data inconsistency — verify at checkout
- 40 ft line
- Thinner owner record than the WARNs
What owners say: Direct owner coverage for the V2 specifically is still thin (the model is recent); the Viper line’s longer record is why the slot exists, and the paperwork caveat above is why it ranks last of the six.
4500 lb UTV winch FAQ
Is 4,500 lb enough for my UTV?
For most, yes: loaded UTVs run 1,600–2,400 lb, and × 1.5 lands at 2,400–3,600 lb of required pull. Heavy, accessorised machines can exceed the class — the calculator above checks your number and routes you up if needed.
Why did the old #1 pick change its link?
Its text reviewed the Terra 45SR (4,500 lb, synthetic) while the link sold the Terra 35 (3,500 lb, steel). The rebuild links the winch the text actually reviews — and checks every other pick the same way.
4500 lb winch: synthetic or steel rope?
Synthetic for most UTVs (five of six picks) — lighter and safer. Steel survives abrasive rock work; the Champion is the steel option here, and WARN’s steel VRX 45 is covered in our RZR guide.
Does gear ratio matter at the same rating?
It trades speed for pull feel: the Viper’s 136:1 retrieves fast under light load; the AXON’s 239:1 pulls slow and controlled. Same 4,500 lb ceiling, different character.
What mounting pattern do 4500 lb winches use?
The wider UTV pattern (3.0 in × 6.6 in class for most; the Viper uses 3.0 × 4.875 in) — and most machines still need a model-specific plate. Confirm both before ordering.
Our verdict
Buy the AXON 45-S for the class’s best package, the VRX 45-S for its deepest proof, and the Terra 45SR for established value. The Black Ops 4500 is the wireless value, the Champion kit the budget door, and the Viper V2 the rope-spec pick with a checkout double-check. Whichever you choose, confirm the link sells the winch the words describe — this guide once failed that test itself, and now treats it as the first rule.
