A Jeep winch is only as strong as the plate under it, and Jeeps make the plate question harder than most vehicles. The JK factory bumper has no winch pocket at all, and the JL and Gladiator steel bumper can take a winch only with the right plate.
This guide reviews the plates Jeep owners actually buy: two JK stock-bumper plates, a JK bumper with the plate built in, a budget JK bumper package, and the universal WARN plate that fits when nothing else does. Every fitment claim is checked against the maker install sheet or listing.
The 30-second answer
For a JK with the stock bumper, buy the Smittybilt 2804. For a JK with the front basic bumper, buy the TeraFlex 4638420. For a JK bumper and plate in one budget buy, get the Nilight bumper. For a full bumper replacement, get the Smittybilt 76801 XRC. For a universal plate, get the WARN 11078.
How we researched this guide
We compared 5 mounting plates and 3 recovery accessories for this guide, and checked the maker listing, install sheet or product page for every plate.
We read Jeep install guides and owner threads for fitment reports, including the JK install sheet for the Smittybilt 2804. We do not test plates.

Best Overall Universal Plate

Jeep winch mounting plates compared
The table below is the short version. The plate to buy is the one made for your Jeep model and bumper, not the one with the biggest number on the listing. Browse the full winch mounting plates category for every plate guide in this series.

Winch size calculator: what plate class do you need?
Enter your loaded vehicle weight (vehicle plus passengers, gear, bumper and winch). The calculator applies the 1.5x rule: minimum rated line pull is loaded weight times 1.5. The plate must be rated for a winch of at least that pull. A plate never makes an undersized winch safe.
How to choose a winch mounting plate for a Jeep
Jeep plates fail on fitment more than on strength. These six checks stop the common mistake: a plate for the wrong bumper.
Bolt pattern first, vehicle second
Most US winches use the 10 in x 4.5 in four-bolt pattern, and most plates in this guide use it too, but the pattern alone does not prove fit. Check the fairlead spacing, the drum length and the clutch handle clearance against your bumper or deck before you order. A plate that matches the pattern and fouls the bumper is still the wrong plate.
Plate thickness and steel grade
Look for at least 1/4 in cold-rolled steel on a full-size truck plate, and 1/5 in steel on a cradle that carries a 10,000 lb winch. Thickness is the number that resists bending under a stall pull. Where a maker does not publish thickness, this guide says so, and the plate earns its place on fitment and warranty instead of a guessed number.
Winch class, not winch brand
Match the plate to the winch class, not the badge on the winch. A plate rated for 8,000 to 13,000 lb winches suits any winch in that class on the same pattern. A plate rated to 3,600 lb is a hard ceiling, and a plate with no published rating should only carry light-duty winches until the maker publishes one.
Receiver class governs cradle pulls
A receiver cradle is only as strong as the receiver it slides into. A Class III 2 in receiver is the minimum for a full-size truck winch, and the pull must stay straight, because the cradle hangs the winch a foot out from the receiver face and an angled pull becomes a lever. No receiver maker publishes a winch-pull rating, so straight pulls and a sound receiver are the rule.
Fairlead and rope type must match
A hawse fairlead suits synthetic rope and a roller fairlead suits steel cable, and the plate has to carry the fairlead your rope needs. Check the fairlead bolt spacing on the plate against the fairlead you own. A plate with a 10 in fairlead mount and a fairlead that does not fit it is a second order and a second install day.
Weight, approach angle and sensors
Every pound on the nose changes steering weight and approach angle, and a plate plus a winch can add 80 lb or more ahead of the front axle. On modern trucks and Jeeps, check the front camera, parking sensors and adaptive cruise radar before you order, because a plate that blocks a sensor costs more than the plate to fix.
Jeep weights and the plate class they need
These are planning figures, not a substitute for your Jeep’s own weight. Weigh the loaded Jeep, multiply by 1.5, and match the plate to a winch of at least that pull. Check the door sticker and your owner’s manual for the exact figure.
| Vehicle / setup | Loaded weight | Minimum line pull (x 1.5) | Source |
|---|---|---|---|
| Wrangler JK 2-door, loaded | About 4,900 lb | 7,350 lb | Planning figure; check your door sticker |
| Wrangler JK Unlimited, loaded | About 5,700 lb | 8,550 lb | Planning figure; check your door sticker |
| Wrangler JL, loaded | About 5,500 lb | 8,250 lb | Planning figure; check your door sticker |
| Gladiator Sport, GVWR | 5,800 lb | 8,700 lb | Gladiator GVWR 5,800 lb per published figures |
| Gladiator Rubicon, GVWR | 6,250 lb | 9,375 lb | Gladiator GVWR 6,250 lb per published figures |
Jeep winch mounting plates by budget
A plate is not the place to save money by guessing. The tiers below show what each spend actually buys.
| Budget tier | What you get | Example pick |
|---|---|---|
| Budget | A plate-only answer for the JK stock bumper | Smittybilt 2804 |
| Mid-range | A bumper and plate in one package | Nilight JK bumper |
| Premium | A bumper with the plate built into its structure | Smittybilt 76801 XRC |
Types of Jeep winch mounting plates
Four shapes cover almost every Jeep install. The right one depends on your model, your bumper, and whether you are replacing the bumper at all.
| Mount type | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Universal flat plate | Fits the most winches and surfaces | Needs a flat, strong surface; no receiver | Trucks, trailers, custom bumpers |
| Vehicle-specific plate | Bolts to factory points; cleanest fit | Fits one vehicle family only | ATV, JK, JL and Gladiator owners |
| Receiver cradle | Moves front to rear and between vehicles | Receiver governs the pull; heavy to carry | Portable winches, shared winches |
| Bumper with built-in plate | Strongest arrangement; one install | Bigger job; costs more than a plate | Owners replacing the bumper anyway |

Best JK Stock-Bumper Plate: Smittybilt 2804 Winch Mounting Plate
Best JK Stock-Bumper Plate — the JK plate that keeps your stock bumper
Why the Smittybilt 2804 Winch Mounting Plate is our pick
The 2804 solves the JK problem in the cheapest honest way: the factory bumper has no winch pocket, so this plate bolts to the frame and carries the winch in front of the stock bumper. Smittybilt rates it for winches up to 10,000 lb, builds it from 1/4 in steel with a powder coat, and ships the frame mounts and hardware with it. The install sheet covers 2007 to 2010 Jeep JK models, and owner guides report fit on later JK stock bumpers with only small adjustments.

Smittybilt 2804 Winch Mounting Plate pros and watch-outs

- Rated to 10,000 lb by the maker
- 1/4 in steel with powder coat
- Frame mounts and hardware included
- Keeps the factory bumper look
Watch-outs
- Install sheet covers 2007-2010 JK only

- Later JK fitment needs a check
- Fairlead and winch sold separately
Smittybilt 2804 Winch Mounting Plate: what owners report
- A mounting-plate guide notes the 2804 fits most Wrangler models from 2010 to 2017 with minimal adjustment. (WinchMania Smittybilt winch plates)
- The Smittybilt install sheet for part SB2804 covers 2007-2010 Jeep JK and lists the plate, frame mounts and hardware pack. (Smittybilt 2804 install instructions)
Owner coverage is through roundups and the install sheet. We print the sheet fitment and mark later-JK reports as owner-reported.
Smittybilt 2804 Winch Mounting Plate: who should not buy
Skip it if you drive a JL or a Gladiator, or if you want a new bumper as well. A JK owner who wants a bumper and a plate in one should look at the Smittybilt 76801 below.
Smittybilt 2804 Winch Mounting Plate: pair it with
Pair it with a winch cover, because a stock-bumper winch sits exposed to rain and road spray.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: Torque the frame bolts to the sheet figure and re-check them after the first trail day. New plates settle, and a loose plate is the common cause of a winch that looks crooked.
Best JK Plate Kit: TeraFlex 4638420 JK Winch Plate Kit
Best JK Plate Kit — the JK kit built for the factory basic bumper
Why the TeraFlex 4638420 JK Winch Plate Kit is our pick
The TeraFlex 4638420 is the kit for a JK owner whose Jeep already has the front basic bumper and who wants a plate that was made for it, not adapted to it. TeraFlex lists alloy steel construction and a 22 x 10 x 4 in package, and the plate takes the standard winch pattern, so most 8,000 to 12,000 lb winches bolt straight on. TeraFlex does not publish a line-pull capacity for the plate itself, and this guide prints that gap instead of borrowing a number from a bumper listing.

- Package size: 22 x 10 x 4 in

TeraFlex 4638420 JK Winch Plate Kit: fits and best for
Best for JK owners with the front basic bumper who want a clean, factory-looking winch mount. It suits standard-pattern winches in the usual Jeep 8,000 to 12,000 lb class. It is not for JL or Gladiator bumpers.
TeraFlex 4638420 JK Winch Plate Kit pros and watch-outs
Pros
- Made for the JK front basic bumper
- Alloy steel construction
- Standard winch pattern
- Clean factory fit
- Fairlead sits where the bumper expects it
Watch-outs

TeraFlex 4638420 JK Winch Plate Kit: what owners report
- TeraFlex lists the 4638420 as a JK winch plate kit for the JK front basic bumper, in alloy steel. (TeraFlex)
- JK install guides note that a plate made for the factory bumper avoids the cutting and spacing that adapted plates need. (Off-Road Pull Jeep winch install guide)
Owner reporting specific to this kit is thin, so we lean on the maker listing and the install guides.
TeraFlex 4638420 JK Winch Plate Kit: who should not buy
Skip it if your JK has an aftermarket bumper already, or if you need a published capacity figure for a heavy winch. The Smittybilt 2804 above carries a published 10,000 lb rating for the stock bumper.
TeraFlex 4638420 JK Winch Plate Kit: pair it with
Pair it with a snatch block and a hawse fairlead matched to your rope, so the fairlead and the plate work as one system.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: Dry-fit the plate and the winch together on the bench first. Check the clutch handle clears the bumper before you torque anything.
Best Budget JK Bumper and Plate: Nilight Front Bumper with Winch Plate for Jeep Wrangler JK

- JK install guides note that an integrated plate removes the separate plate alignment step. (Off-Road Pull Jeep winch install guide)
Owner reporting here is mostly about fitment and lights, not the plate under load.
Nilight Front Bumper with Winch Plate for Jeep Wrangler JK: who should not buy
Skip it if you already have a bumper you like, or if you want a plate only. The Smittybilt 2804 above is the plate-only answer for the stock bumper.
Nilight Front Bumper with Winch Plate for Jeep Wrangler JK: pair it with
Pair it with a winch cover and rated shackles for the D-ring mounts.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: Fit the bumper with a helper and check the plate bolts after the first 50 miles.
Best JK Bumper with Plate: Smittybilt 76801 XRC Front Bumper with Winch Plate
Best JK Bumper with Plate — the XRC bumper with the plate already built in
Why the Smittybilt 76801 XRC Front Bumper with Winch Plate is our pick
The 76801 is for the JK owner who is replacing the bumper anyway: the XRC front bumper carries its winch plate inside the bumper, so there is no separate plate to buy, align or bolt to the frame. Smittybilt lists fitment for a wide range of Jeep Wrangler models, and notes that some models need a specific mounting bracket to install the bumper securely, so the bracket check matters before ordering. The plate is part of the bumper structure, which is the strongest arrangement for a JK.
Smittybilt 76801 XRC Front Bumper with Winch Plate key specs
- Part number: Smittybilt 76801
- Type: XRC front bumper with integrated winch plate
- Fitment: Jeep Wrangler models, bracket may vary by model

Smittybilt 76801 XRC Front Bumper with Winch Plate: fits and best for
Best for JK owners who want a new front bumper and a winch mount in one install. It suits owners who will use the bumper for recovery, not just looks. It is not for owners who want to keep the stock bumper.
Smittybilt 76801 XRC Front Bumper with Winch Plate pros and watch-outs
Pros
- Bumper and plate in one structure
- Strongest JK mounting arrangement
- Wide Wrangler fitment
- No separate plate to align
- Smittybilt XRC range
Watch-outs
- Maker publishes no plate capacity
- Some models need a specific bracket
- Bumper swap is a bigger install
- Winch and fairlead sold separately
Smittybilt 76801 XRC Front Bumper with Winch Plate: what owners report
- A Smittybilt plate guide describes the 76801 as a bumper with the plate integrated, fitting a wide range of Wrangler models. (WinchMania Smittybilt winch plates)
- JK install guides note that a bumper swap on a JK is a 3 to 5 hour job including wiring, so plan the day, not the hour. (Off-Road Pull Jeep winch install guide)
Owner reporting here is general to the XRC range.
Smittybilt 76801 XRC Front Bumper with Winch Plate: who should not buy
Skip it if you want to keep your stock bumper. The Smittybilt 2804 plate above is the keep-the-bumper answer.
Smittybilt 76801 XRC Front Bumper with Winch Plate: pair it with
Pair it with a tree saver strap and rated shackles, so the new bumper works as a recovery point on the first trip out.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: Check which mounting bracket your JK needs before you order. The bumper fits a wide range, but the bracket is model-specific.
Best Overall Universal Plate: WARN 11078 Universal Foot Forward Winch Mount Kit
Best Overall Universal Plate — the universal plate that fits the most winches, from the maker most owners trust
Why the WARN 11078 Universal Foot Forward Winch Mount Kit is our pick
The 11078 is the plate to buy when the vehicle has no mount of its own, or when the winch must move between a truck bed, a trailer and a bumper. WARN designed it for its M12, XD9, VR8, M6, M8, 9.5xp and M8274-50 winches, and the elongated holes accept most other standard-pattern winches. It is a flat plate, so the surface must be flat and strong; it cannot fix a weak bumper or a thin bed floor.
WARN 11078 Universal Foot Forward Winch Mount Kit key specs
- Part number: WARN 11078
- Mount type: Universal flat plate, foot-forward
- Winch fitment: WARN M12, XD9, VR8, M6, M8, 9.5xp, M8274-50
- Bolt pattern: 10 in x 4.5 in, foot-forward and foot-down
- Fairlead mount: 10 in on-center
- Material: Steel, black powder coat
- Face shield: Included
- Plate thickness: Not published
- Weight: Not published
- Hardware: Included
- Warranty: Not published
- Winch class: Up to 13,000 lb class, per third-party guides
WARN 11078 Universal Foot Forward Winch Mount Kit: fits and best for
Best for owners who need one plate for a flat surface: a truck bed, a trailer deck, a custom bumper or a shop-built carrier. It suits 8,000 to 13,000 lb class winches on the standard pattern. It is not a vehicle-specific bolt-on, so a stock plastic bumper or a curved surface needs a different solution.
WARN 11078 Universal Foot Forward Winch Mount Kit pros and watch-outs
Pros
- Fits most WARN and standard-pattern winches
- Foot-forward and foot-down mounting holes
- Face shield guards the drum
- Steel plate with black powder coat
- Hardware included
Watch-outs
- Needs a flat, strong mounting surface
- No published plate thickness or weight
- Cannot move front to rear, no receiver shank
- Fairlead fixed at 10 in on-center
WARN 11078 Universal Foot Forward Winch Mount Kit: what owners report
- Winch forums call the 11078 the go-to universal plate where no vehicle-specific mount exists, and praise the WARN M-series fit. (WinchMania winch mounting plates guide)
- A mounting-plate roundup notes the flatbed design and 10 in fairlead spacing. (OffRoadersWorld best winch mounting plates)
Owner coverage for a bare plate is thin: plates are reviewed as part of a winch install, not alone.
WARN 11078 Universal Foot Forward Winch Mount Kit: who should not buy
Skip it if your vehicle already has a dedicated mount, or if you need a portable receiver cradle. A JK owner should look at the Smittybilt 2804 instead.
WARN 11078 Universal Foot Forward Winch Mount Kit: pair it with
Pair it with a snatch block for angled pulls and a fairlead that matches your rope type.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: Bolt the plate down first, then check the drum clears the face shield before you torque the bolts.

Installation and fitment basics
Start by naming your bumper. A JK with the stock plastic bumper needs a plate like the Smittybilt 2804 that bolts to the frame, a JK with the front basic bumper needs a kit like the TeraFlex 4638420, and a JL or Gladiator with the factory steel bumper needs a plate made for that bumper. Our best winch for Jeep JK guide and best winch for Jeep Gladiator guide cover the bumper check for each model.
Dry-fit everything on the bench before you touch the Jeep. Set the winch on the plate, check the drum clears the bumper, check the clutch handle moves, and check the fairlead sits square. A JK bumper swap is a 3 to 5 hour job including wiring, and a JL plate install is 2 to 4 hours, so plan the day. Our mount a winch to a front bumper guide shows the dry-fit order.
Torque the plate bolts to the maker figure and re-check them after the first trail day. New plates settle on their mounts, and a loose plate is the common cause of a winch that looks crooked after a month. Check the front camera, parking sensors and adaptive cruise radar before the first drive, because a plate or winch that blocks a sensor costs more than the plate to fix.
Safety essentials
A winch is safety equipment, and the plate is part of it. These six rules apply to every pull, whatever the plate.
Safety essentials — read before your first pull
- Stand clear of the line and never stand in line with it. A broken line or hook can snap back across the plate and bumper.
- Use a winch damper or a heavy blanket over the line on every pull, and wear gloves when you handle rope or cable.
- Never hook the line back to itself. Anchor to a rated point with a tree saver or a shackle, never to the plate edge.
- Keep at least 5 wraps of steel cable or 10 wraps of synthetic rope on the drum, or the line can pull free of the drum.
- Keep pulls short and let the motor cool. A long stall pull overheats the motor and loads the plate bolts past their design.
- Check every plate bolt and the fairlead bolts before a trip. A loose plate turns a straight pull into a lever on the frame.
WARN Epic Snatch Block — A snatch block lets you double the line back to the vehicle, which halves the load on the winch and the plate on a hard pull.
WARN Winch Cover 91414 — A cover keeps rain, mud and road salt off the winch and the plate bolts between trips, which slows rust at the mounting holes.
AMBULL D-Ring Shackles — Rated shackles connect strap to plate and line without a hook that can slip off under load.
Our accessory guides go deeper: best snatch block for winching, best tree saver strap and best D-ring shackles for recovery.
Troubleshooting
Most plate problems show up on the first install or the first pull. The fixes below come from install sheets and owner reports.
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Winch will not sit flat on the plate | Plate holes do not match the winch feet | Check the 10 in x 4.5 in pattern against the winch manual; do not elongate holes with a drill |
| Plate flexes on the first pull | Mounting surface is too thin, or bolts are loose | Stop the pull, re-torque to the maker figure, and add a backing plate or move to a frame mount |
| Fairlead does not line up | Fairlead spacing differs from the plate mount | Measure the fairlead bolt centers before ordering; buy the fairlead adapter the plate maker lists |
| Winch hits the bumper on install | Drum or clutch handle fouls the bumper | Dry-fit on the bench first; use the offset holes if the plate has them, or change the bumper |
| Bolts loosen after the first trip | New plate settled on its mounts | Re-torque after the first trail day and again after a month, then at every service |
| Rust starts at the bolt holes | Paint cracked at the holes during install | Clean, dry and touch up the paint, and fit a winch cover between trips |
Who should NOT buy these
A plate for the wrong Jeep model: JK, JL and Gladiator plates are not interchangeable. A JK plate will not fit a JL bumper, and a JL plate will not fit a JK. Check the model and the bumper before you order.
A winch over the plate rating: Never put a 12,000 lb winch on a plate rated to 10,000 lb. The plate is the weak link, and it will show it on the hardest pull, which is the one that matters.
A plate on a plastic bumper: The stock plastic bumper cannot carry a winch on a plate alone. You need a frame-mounted plate, a steel bumper, or an aftermarket bumper first.
A plate with no published rating for heavy work: If the pull is heavy and the maker publishes no capacity, do not guess. Use a plate with a published rating, like the Smittybilt 2804 at 10,000 lb or the Nilight at 12,000 lb.

FAQ
Do Jeep Wranglers need a winch mounting plate?
Yes, unless the bumper already has one built in. The JK factory bumper has no winch pocket, so a plate or a new bumper is required. The JL and Gladiator factory steel bumper can take a winch with the right plate, while the plastic bumper cannot carry one on a plate alone.
What is the best winch mounting plate for a Jeep Wrangler JK?
For a JK with the stock bumper, the Smittybilt 2804 is the plate in this guide, rated to 10,000 lb with the frame mounts included. For a JK with the front basic bumper, the TeraFlex 4638420 is the kit made for it. Both are covered in full above.
Will a JK winch plate fit a JL Wrangler?
No. JK and JL bumpers and frame horns differ, and the plates are model-specific. A JK plate will not bolt to a JL bumper correctly. Buy the plate made for your model, and check the year range on the listing before you order.
Can I mount a winch on a stock Jeep bumper?
On a JK, no, not without a plate: the stock bumper has no winch pocket, so a frame-mounted plate like the Smittybilt 2804 is required. On a JL or Gladiator with the factory steel bumper, yes, with a plate made for that bumper. On any Jeep with the plastic bumper, no, you need a steel bumper or an aftermarket bumper first.
What bolt pattern do Jeep winch plates use?
Most Jeep winch plates use the standard 10 in x 4.5 in four-bolt pattern, which is the same pattern most 8,000 to 12,000 lb winches use. The pattern alone does not prove fit: check the fairlead spacing, the drum length and the clutch clearance against your bumper.
How much does it cost to install a winch plate on a Jeep?
This guide carries no prices, because they change. The install itself is a 2 to 5 hour job depending on the model: a JL plate is 2 to 4 hours, and a JK bumper swap is 3 to 5 hours including wiring. A shop will charge for that time on top of the parts.
Do I need a new bumper to fit a winch on a JK?
No, not always. A frame-mounted plate like the Smittybilt 2804 lets you keep the stock bumper. A new bumper is the better answer if you also want protection and recovery points, and the Smittybilt 76801 XRC is the bumper-and-plate option in this guide.
What size winch fits a Jeep winch mounting plate?
Most plates in this guide suit winches from 8,000 to 12,000 lb on the standard pattern. Match the winch to the plate rating: a 10,000 lb plate should not carry a 12,000 lb winch. Use the 1.5x rule on your loaded Jeep weight to pick the winch class first.
Can I install a Jeep winch plate myself?
Yes, if you are comfortable with hand tools and you follow the install sheet. A JL plate is a bolt-on job for most owners. A JK bumper swap is heavier and needs a helper. Torque every bolt to the sheet figure and re-check it after the first trail day.
