The 30-second answer
For a beginner the fairlead rule is simple: hawse for synthetic rope, roller for steel cable, and a 10 inch bolt pattern for most full-size winches. The easiest first buy is a billet aluminium hawse for synthetic rope, and the WARN aluminium hawse is the reference pick, with the STANDOUTELROAL hawse as the checked Amazon alternative for beginners who want a button today. The picks in this guide are: WARN Aluminium Hawse Fairlead, Factor 55 Hawse Fairlead 1.5 Inch, Factor 55 XTV Hawse Fairlead 6 Inch, Smittybilt Aluminium Hawse Fairlead, STANDOUTELROAL Hawse Fairlead. Read the product blocks for the full reasoning, and use the finder below to match a pick to your job.
How we researched this guide
We compared 5 products for this guide, checked 9 maker pages, spec sheets and listing records, and reviewed owner points from maker guides and listing records. No product was tested by us in person, and no specification below is guessed: where a maker does not publish a figure, the text says so instead of filling the gap.
Owner points are paraphrased in our own words and linked to their sources. Manufacturer claims are written as rated or stated figures, not as results we measured. If a detail could not be verified from a maker document or a listing record, it was left out of the product block.

Fairlead finder
Enter your winch size in pounds. The finder matches winch size to a fairlead type, and an out-of-range number routes to the strongest premium hawse.
How to choose a winch fairlead
Rope match first
Hawse fairleads suit synthetic rope because the smooth, rounded opening reduces friction and heat, while roller fairleads suit steel cable because rollers guide the cable without dragging it over an edge. Using a hawse with steel cable wears grooves into aluminium, and using a worn roller with synthetic rope can snag fibres. Match the fairlead to the line you actually have.
Bolt pattern
The industry standard for full-size winches is a 10 inch bolt pattern, while many ATV and UTV winches use a 6 inch pattern. Measure centre to centre before ordering, because a fairlead with the wrong pattern cannot be forced to fit without drilling a bumper or mount, which a beginner should not do.
Material and finish
Billet aluminium hawses are CNC machined, anodised and smooth, while cast aluminium hawses are cheaper but can pit and roughen with salt and weather. Steel hawses suit steel cable, and roller fairleads use steel frames and rollers. For synthetic rope, a smooth billet hawse protects the rope best over time.
Thickness and rope size
Thicker hawses, such as 1.0 inch and 1.5 inch Factor 55 models, support larger rope thimbles and give a smoother radius for the rope. Check the rope diameter your fairlead is made for, and do not use a thin hawse with a thick rope thimble that cannot pass cleanly.
Approach angle and weight
A hawse sits close to the bumper, about 1 inch of stick-out, while a roller sticks out about 3.5 inches and weighs far more. For a beginner, the hawse advantage is real: better approach angle, less weight on the front, and fewer moving parts to maintain.
Hardware and fitting
Check whether bolts, washers and nuts are included, and whether longer bolts are needed for your bumper thickness. A fairlead that arrives without hardware is not a problem if you buy the right grade bolts, but a beginner should prefer a kit that includes them and follows the maker torque guidance.
Fairlead data at a glance
Measure bolt pattern centre to centre and rope diameter before ordering. A fairlead that does not match both cannot be made to fit safely by a beginner.

Best winch fairlead by budget
Budget here means the class of product, not a price: makers and retailers change prices, so this guide never prints one. Pick the tier that matches the job, then check the current listing through the button.
| Tier | What you get | Example pick |
|---|---|---|
| Beginner Amazon | Simple hawse with a button | STANDOUTELROAL hawse |
| Reference hawse | Maker hawse for synthetic rope | WARN aluminium hawse |
| Premium hawse | Thick billet hawse with large thimble support | Factor 55 hawse 1.5 inch |
Before you buy: final check
Before you buy, measure your current fairlead centre to centre, note your rope type and diameter, and check whether your winch uses a standard drum or a short drum, because short-drum winches need a different hawse in some WARN lines. Those three facts, measured with a tape and read from the rope label, decide the fairlead more reliably than winch brand or size alone. Also check whether bolts are included for your pick, and buy the correct grade and length for your bumper thickness if they are not. A beginner who orders from measurements, rather than from a photo that looked right, avoids the most common fairlead return: the wrong bolt pattern.
Types of winch fairleads
| Type | Strengths | Watch-outs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Aluminium hawse | Smooth, light, low profile | Synthetic rope only | Synthetic rope winches |
| Steel hawse | Strong for steel cable | Heavier, can rust if uncoated | Steel cable winches |
| Roller fairlead | Guides steel cable, less drag | Heavy, rollers can seize | Steel cable winches |
| Powersports hawse | 6 inch pattern for ATV and UTV | Not for full-size winches | ATV and UTV winches |

Installation and basics
Remove the old fairlead, clean the mounting face, and check the bolt pattern and rope path before fitting the new one. Fit the fairlead with the correct grade bolts, washers and nuts, torque by maker guidance, and spool the rope or cable through it slowly to check for snagging, sharp edges or misalignment. For synthetic rope, check that the rope eye and thimble pass cleanly and that the rope does not rub a sharp bumper edge.
After fitting, do a light pull on flat ground to settle the rope, then respool evenly under light tension. Inspect the fairlead opening after the first real recovery for grooves, burrs or roller seizure, and replace a fairlead that shows damage rather than letting it wear the rope further. Useful background: best ATV winch guide, snatch block guide, and tree saver strap guide.
Safety essentials
- Match the fairlead to the line: hawse for synthetic, roller for steel.
- Never winch with a cracked, grooved or seized fairlead.
- Keep hands clear of the fairlead and line during a pull.
- Use a winch damper, gloves and eye protection for every recovery.
- Keep at least five wraps on the drum, and never hook the line to itself.
- Follow your winch manual for line, fairlead and recovery procedures.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Rope frays at fairlead | Burr, groove or wrong fairlead type | Inspect opening, replace damaged fairlead, match type to rope |
| Roller will not turn | Seized bearing or dirt | Clean, inspect bearings, replace roller fairlead if seized |
| Fairlead bolts loosen | Wrong torque or vibration | Retorque by maker guidance, check after first pull |
| Rope will not pass thimble | Hawse too thin for thimble | Use a thicker hawse rated for that thimble size |
| Cable jumps off roller | Misaligned mount or bent roller | Realign mount, replace bent roller fairlead |
Who should NOT buy these
Do not buy a hawse for a steel cable winch. Aluminium hawses wear grooves under steel cable, and those grooves then damage any synthetic rope fitted later. If your winch has steel cable, buy a roller fairlead or a steel hawse, and change the fairlead when you change to synthetic rope.
Do not buy a fairlead without measuring bolt pattern. A 10 inch fairlead does not fit a 6 inch ATV mount, and a 6 inch fairlead does not fit a full-size winch. Measure centre to centre, check rope diameter, and only then order, because a wrong-pattern fairlead cannot be made safe by drilling a bumper.
Do not buy the cheapest cast hawse for a synthetic rope you want to keep. A rough or pitted cast opening wears synthetic fibres faster than a smooth billet opening, and the rope is usually worth more than the saving. For synthetic rope, a smooth billet hawse is the honest long-term choice.

FAQ
What is a winch fairlead for?
A fairlead guides the winch line from the drum through the bumper, keeping the line aligned and reducing wear. Without a fairlead the line would rub the bumper edge, spool unevenly and wear out far faster, and a recovery would be harder to control.
Should beginners choose a hawse or roller fairlead?
Choose by line type: hawse for synthetic rope and roller for steel cable. That single rule avoids most beginner fairlead mistakes. If you plan to change from steel to synthetic later, change the fairlead at the same time.
What bolt pattern does my winch need?
Most full-size winches use a 10 inch bolt pattern, while many ATV and UTV winches use a 6 inch pattern. Measure centre to centre on your current fairlead or mount before ordering, and do not guess from winch size alone.
Can I use a roller fairlead with synthetic rope?
Some makers allow it if rollers are clean, smooth and free-turning, but most guides advise against it because a worn or seized roller can snag synthetic fibres. A hawse is the safer, simpler choice for synthetic rope, especially for a beginner.
Why are billet hawse fairleads better?
Billet hawses are CNC machined from aluminium bar, anodised and polished smooth, which reduces friction and rope wear. Cast hawses are cheaper but can pit and roughen with salt and weather, which wears synthetic rope faster over time.
How thick should a hawse fairlead be?
Standard hawses are about 0.75 inch thick, while premium models are 1.0 inch or 1.5 inch thick. Thicker hawses support larger rope thimbles and give a smoother radius, which matters for larger ropes and for closed-system winching hardware.
Do fairleads come with bolts?
Some do and some do not, so check the listing or maker instructions before ordering. Where bolts are not included, buy the correct grade and length for your bumper thickness, and torque them by maker guidance rather than by feel alone.
How do I know if my fairlead is worn out?
Look for grooves, burrs, cracks, seized rollers or a rough opening that catches the rope. Any of those signs means the fairlead is now wearing the rope, and it should be replaced before the next recovery rather than after a rope failure.
Can a beginner fit a fairlead alone?
Yes, in most cases. Fitting a fairlead is a bolt-on job: remove the old one, clean the mount, fit the new one with correct hardware and torque, and spool the line through it slowly to check alignment. If the bolt pattern does not match, stop and order the right pattern rather than drilling.
