The 30-second answer
A smart thermostat without a C-wire is a thermostat running on borrowed power: it reboots, drops Wi-Fi, or shows a power error, and the fix is not a new thermostat, it is a C-wire. This guide compares maker C-wire adapters, power connectors and plug-in transformers, so you buy the fix that matches your thermostat brand and your house wiring.
Our picks are: Honeywell Home C-Wire Adapter CWIREADPTR8001, Google Nest Power Connector GA02493-US, Honeywell Home C-Wire Adapter THP9045A2098/U, VIIVRIA 24V Transformer C Wire Adapter 315 Inch Cable, Xwartre UL Certified Thermostat C Wire 24V Transformer 26FT.
How we researched this guide
We compared 5 C-wire adapters for this guide, checked 4 maker and listing records for specifications and fitment, and reviewed thermostat guide summaries and HVAC discussion. No product in this guide was trialled by this site, and every performance figure below is a maker rating or a paraphrased guide summary with a link.
We print Not published wherever the evidence checked gave no figure, rather than guessing, and we rejected products whose identity or key specification could not be verified from a listing record or a maker document.
Diagnosis note: not every thermostat problem is a C-wire problem. Confirm the error is power-related, check for an unused wire tucked behind the wall, and check your furnace transformer before buying any adapter, because an adapter cannot fix a failed transformer.
Best Honeywell C-wire adapter
Honeywell Home C-Wire Adapter CWIREADPTR8001
This is the maker adapter for Honeywell Home smart thermostats. Resideo's own description states the rule: all Honeywell Home smart thermostats require 24 volts of C-wire power, and this adapter makes them compatible with most homes that do not have a common wire. It is the first pick for a Honeywell thermostat with no C-wire.
Best Nest C-wire substitute
Google Nest Power Connector GA02493-US
Google's own description calls this a C-wire substitute: Nest thermostats are designed to work without a C-wire in most homes, but some systems need consistent power, and this connector provides it without new thermostat wiring. It is the pick for a Nest thermostat that reboots, drops Wi-Fi or shows a power error.
Best Honeywell adapter kit
Honeywell Home C-Wire Adapter THP9045A2098/U
This Honeywell adapter, model THP9045A2098/U, is listed with an adapter, a magnetic backplate and a modern exterior cover, plus a remote control in the listing record. It is the pick when the thermostat wall plate itself is part of the job, not just the wiring behind it.
Best long-cable transformer
VIIVRIA 24V Transformer C Wire Adapter 315 Inch Cable
This is the transformer route, and its cable is the feature: a 315 inch cable, about 26 feet, lets the transformer reach an outlet far from the thermostat. It is listed as compatible with all versions of Ring doorbell and thermostats for Ecobee, Sensi and Honeywell, which makes it the flexible pick for a mixed-brand home.
Best certified transformer
Xwartre UL Certified Thermostat C Wire 24V Transformer 26FT
This transformer is listed as UL certified, with an input of 120V AC at 60Hz and 0.2A and an output of 24VAC at 500mA, on a 26 foot cable. That published certification and output rating are the reason to choose it over an uncertified transformer: the numbers are on the record, not implied.

C-wire finder: how long is the cable run from an outlet?
Enter the distance in feet from the nearest usable outlet to the thermostat. Short runs suit a furnace-board connector, while long runs need a long-cable transformer. This finder routes by cable length only; maker adapters are chosen by thermostat brand, not by length.
How to choose best c wire adapter
Thermostat brand first
Maker adapters are brand-specific: Honeywell adapters for Honeywell thermostats, and the Nest Power Connector for Nest thermostats. A universal transformer is the fallback, not the first choice, when a maker adapter exists for your thermostat.
Furnace board or plug-in
Furnace-board adapters need board access and careful wiring, while plug-in transformers need an outlet and a cable route. Choose by what you are willing to open: a board you will not open points to a transformer, and a visible cable run points to a board adapter.
Check for a spare wire
Many homes have an unused wire tucked behind the wall at the thermostat or at the furnace. If one exists, connecting it as a C-wire is free and needs no adapter at all, so check before buying anything.
Transformer rating
A plug-in transformer must match voltage and deliver enough current. The Xwartre transformer here publishes 24VAC at 500mA, and your thermostat manual states its requirement. An under-rated transformer causes the same symptoms as no C-wire.
Cable routing
A transformer cable crossing a visible wall, a door or a walkway is a trip hazard and an eyesore. Plan the route with clips and a channel before buying, and never use a switched outlet, or the thermostat dies with the lights.
Safety and power off
Turn off power at the breaker before opening a furnace panel or touching thermostat wiring. Photograph the board before moving any wire, because an unlabelled board turns a simple job into a service call.

Installation and basics
Installing a C-wire adapter starts with diagnosis, not with wiring. Turn off power at the breaker, remove the thermostat from the wall, and check for an unused wire tucked behind it. If one exists, check the furnace end too, because a wire that is spare at the wall but unconnected at the furnace still needs connecting at the board. If no spare wire exists, choose your route: a maker adapter or power connector installs at the furnace board, following that product's own wiring guide exactly, with every existing wire photographed and labelled first. A plug-in transformer installs differently: plug it into an unswitched outlet, route its cable neatly to the thermostat with clips, and connect its two wires to the C and RC terminals as the product guide says, using the included jumper between RH and RC if your system has cooling and the guide calls for it. Restore power, check the thermostat powers up and stays powered, and watch it for a day before calling the job done, because an intermittent power fault takes time to show itself. If the thermostat still misbehaves, the fault is elsewhere, and an adapter will not fix it.
For background on the wider system, see how to use a winch, how to wire a winch and winch maintenance checklist.
Safety essentials
Follow the maker manual for your product and vehicle. Never exceed a rated capacity. Keep hands clear of moving parts and pinch points. Disconnect power before wiring work. Wear eye protection and gloves for cutting, drilling and adhesive work. Work on a stable, supported vehicle, never under a load held only by a jack. Stop and diagnose unusual noise, heat or leaks instead of continuing.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Thermostat still reboots | Fault is not power, or transformer under-rated | Confirm diagnosis and check transformer rating |
| Thermostat dead after install | Breaker off, wire loose, or switched outlet | Check breaker, connections and outlet switching |
| Wi-Fi drops intermittently | Marginal power, not no power | A C-wire adapter or connector should fix marginal power |
| Furnace board confusion | Wires moved without labels | Photograph and label before any wiring work |
| Cable looks messy | Transformer route not planned | Route with clips and a channel, or switch to a board adapter |
| Wrong thermostat brand adapter | Maker adapter for another brand | Buy the maker adapter for your thermostat brand |
Who should NOT buy these
Owners with a spare wire should not buy an adapter yet. Check behind the wall and at the furnace first, because a spare wire connected as a C-wire is free and needs no product at all.
Nest 3rd generation owners should not buy the VIIVRIA transformer. Its listing note excludes that thermostat. Buy the Nest Power Connector or a transformer that lists your model.
Owners who will not open a furnace panel should not buy a board adapter. A board adapter needs board access. Buy a plug-in transformer instead, and plan the cable route.

FAQ
What is a C-wire?
A C-wire, or common wire, delivers continuous 24 volt power from the furnace transformer to a thermostat. Older thermostats ran on batteries and did not need one, while smart thermostats with Wi-Fi and displays need continuous power.
Do I need a C-wire adapter?
You need one if your thermostat needs continuous power, your system has no C-wire at the wall, and no spare wire exists to connect as a C-wire. If a spare wire exists, connecting it is free and no adapter is needed.
What is the difference between a C-wire adapter and a transformer?
A maker C-wire adapter or power connector installs at the furnace board and repurposes existing wiring, while a plug-in transformer plugs into an outlet and runs a cable to the thermostat. Both deliver 24 volt power, by different routes.
Will a C-wire adapter work with any thermostat?
No. Maker adapters are brand-specific, and some transformers exclude specific models, such as the Nest 3rd generation exclusion on one transformer here. Check your thermostat model against the product listing before ordering.
Is it safe to install a C-wire adapter myself?
It is a low-voltage job, but it still needs the breaker off, a photograph of the furnace board before any wire moves, and the product's own wiring guide followed exactly. If the board confuses you, hire an HVAC technician.
Why does my smart thermostat keep rebooting?
Often because it is running on borrowed power without a C-wire, so it reboots when its battery or power-stealing circuit cannot keep up. A C-wire adapter fixes that cause, but not other causes such as a failed transformer or a Wi-Fi fault.
Can I use a doorbell transformer for a thermostat?
Some 24 volt transformers are listed for both doorbells and thermostats, but the output rating and compatibility must match your thermostat. Check the listing and your thermostat manual, because voltage alone is not enough.
Where does a plug-in transformer cable go?
One wire goes to the C terminal and the other to the RC terminal on the thermostat, with a jumper between RH and RC if your system has cooling and the product guide calls for it. Route the cable neatly and use an unswitched outlet.
What if my furnace has no 24 volt transformer?
Then no C-wire adapter will help, because there is no 24 volt source to deliver. That is an HVAC repair, not an adapter purchase, and a technician should diagnose it.
