A bull bar is the simplest front-end accessory there is: a centre hoop that bolts on in front of your stock bumper to shrug off brush, carry lights and change the look. It is not a bumper replacement, no bar here has a winch mount, and — this matters — no maker rates one for crash protection. This guide compares six bars from Black Horse, Rough Country, Westin, Tyger Auto, ARIES and Armordillo on the makers’ own specifications, honestly: if you want real strength or a winch, start with our winch bumper guide and front bumper winch guide instead. Everything else lives in our bull bars archive.
One warning before the picks: four of the six makers state in their own fitment notes that their bar may interfere with parking sensors, cameras or adaptive cruise. Only one bar here is built to relocate parking sensors. If your truck has sensors or ACC, read the sensor section before buying — owners who skipped it describe constant dash warnings. The same discipline we apply in our F-150 winch guide and Tacoma winch guide applies here.
How we researched this guide
We compared 6 bull bars from 6 makers, taking every tube size, material, finish, skid plate, light provision, sensor note and warranty from the maker’s own pages, application charts or dealer listings reproducing the maker’s spec tables. Where a maker publishes no figure, tables print Not published. Five bars have a verified Amazon listing for a named fitment; the Westin does not, so it carries a written alternative with an affiliate link everywhere it appears, per this site’s affiliate gate. We do not test bull bars, none is described as crash protection, and there are no prices here.
We reviewed owner reports across 3 forums — Tacoma World, 4Runners.com, Tundras.com — concentrating on the sensor and adaptive-cruise problems owners actually hit, paraphrased and linked in each owner section. Fitment years are the maker’s application years for the exact part number linked.
The 30-second answer
With parking sensors, start with the Black Horse Armour: the only bar here with sensor holes and a relocation kit in the box, plus a 20-inch LED. Light first? The Rough Country LED integrates a maker-rated 7,200-lumen bar. The Westin Ultimate is the classic 3-inch bar with a stainless plate — no verified Amazon listing, so it carries an alternative. The Tyger Auto Guard is the budget GM pick, the ARIES 3-inch the RAM pick, and the Armordillo AR Series the angular F-150 look. None is crash protection.
Best for Sensor-Equipped Trucks
Black Horse Armour Bull Bar AB-GM27
Best with parking sensors: capped sensor holes, a relocation kit in the box, an included 20-inch LED, bolt-on no-drill fit.
Best Integrated Light
Rough Country LED Bull Bar B-C4071
Best if light is the point: a 3-inch steel bar with the 20-inch Black Series LED built in — maker-rated 7,200 lumens, 90 watts — harness included.
Best Classic Bull Bar
Westin Ultimate Bull Bar 32-3875
Best for the traditional 3-inch bar done properly: stainless plate, mount kit included, 5-year warranty. Dealer-sold — no verified Amazon listing.
Alternative: no verified Amazon listing for this part — closest in-guide alternative with a verified listing: the Black Horse Armour Bull Bar.
Best Budget
Tyger Auto Guard Bull Bar TG-GD6C60048
Best if your 2007–2018 GM half-ton needs a bar without the spend: 2.5-inch carbon steel, a pre-welded light channel, 5-year warranty.
Best for RAM Trucks
ARIES 3-Inch Bull Bar B35-5006
Best if you run a RAM: 3-inch heavy-wall steel, a removable stainless skid plate, two pre-drilled light holes, no-drill fit on factory holes.
Best Angular Look
Armordillo AR Series Bull Bar 8714676
Best if the F-150’s grille should stay the star: an angular frame instead of a tube, a large skid plate and two light mounts.

Bull bar finder
Pick your truck, your priority, and whether it has parking sensors or adaptive cruise. It recommends only bars from this guide — with sensors, it routes only to the bar whose maker builds for them, or states the conflict plainly.
How to choose a bull bar
What a bull bar does — and what it does not do
A bull bar deflects brush, branches, carts and minor parking contact, carries lights and changes the look. That is the whole job. No maker here rates a bar for crash protection, it is not a safety device, and fitting one can change how front structure and sensors behave in a collision. Any seller promising crash safety is a reason to walk away.
Tube size and material
Most classic bars are 3-inch tube on full-size trucks, 2.5-inch on smaller applications — the Tyger is the 2.5-inch example. Diameter is mostly proportion; weld and bracket quality matter more. Carbon steel is the default; stainless resists rust best. The Armordillo is the alternative: an angular frame covering more bumper face than a hoop.
Skid plate: included, removable or none
A skid plate guards the lower bumper and radiator approach from stones and debris — brush duty, not rock crawling. Westin and ARIES plates are stainless; the ARIES plate unbolts for a bare look. The other three have no plate, and Rough Country’s bar cannot coexist with the factory aluminium plate.
Light mounting
Three patterns appear: an LED bar included and wired (Black Horse, Rough Country), pre-drilled holes for your own lights (ARIES, Westin with optional brackets), and a channel or mounts for later (Tyger, Armordillo). Included light is tidy; drilled crossbars are flexible. Auxiliary lights are off-road-only in the makers’ notes.
Sensors, ACC, cameras and tow hooks
This decides most modern purchases. Four makers warn of sensor, camera or cruise interference; Rough Country excludes adaptive-cruise models outright, and Armordillo’s 2021+ F-150 fitment excludes sensors/ACC. Only the Black Horse relocates parking sensors. Most bars also cost you the factory tow hooks — and a bull bar is never a recovery point.
Finish and rust
Black powder coat over steel is the standard finish and failure point: chips at welds and brackets rust first. E-coat under the powder (ARIES, Tyger) slows that; stainless shrugs off salt. On salted roads, ten spring minutes — wash, touch in, check bolts — keeps it presentable.
Fitment notes by vehicle
Each row is the verified fitment for the exact part number linked, from the maker’s application data. Bars are fitment-specific: one family wears many part numbers.
| Vehicle | Bar in this guide | Part | Fitment note (maker) |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ford F-150 | Armordillo AR Series | 8714676 | 2004–2024; excl. Heritage and Raptor; 2021+ only without sensors/ACC; cutting possible without tow hooks |
| Silverado / Sierra 1500 | Tyger Auto Guard | TG-GD6C60048 | 2007–2018 incl. 2019 LD/Limited; not 2007 Classic; tow hooks removed; may interfere with sensors |
| Silverado 1500 | Westin Ultimate | 32-3875 | 2016–2018; will interfere with sensors/camera; tow hooks cannot be re-used; air dam cutting |
| Silverado / Sierra 1500 & SUV | Rough Country LED | B-C4071 | 2007–2020 family; no adaptive cruise; factory skid plate must be removed; tow hooks removed on SUVs |
| Silverado / Sierra 2500/3500 HD | Black Horse Armour | AB-GM27 | 2020–2026; sensor holes + relocation kit; 20 in LED included |
| RAM 1500 / 2500 / 3500 | ARIES 3-Inch | B35-5006 | Select years per ARIES info; no-drill on factory holes; may interfere with cameras/sensors |
| Tacoma / 4Runner | No verified-ASIN pick | Not published | Makers sell applications (e.g. ARIES B35-2006, 2010–2024 4Runner) but no ASIN was verified for a Toyota part this pass — buy by exact part number from a dealer |
Bull bars by budget
| Tier | What you get | Example pick from this guide |
|---|---|---|
| Entry | A welded steel hoop, light channel, long warranty — no plate, no included light | Tyger Auto Guard TG-GD6C60048 |
| Mid | A skid plate or an included LED bar, better finishes | ARIES 3-Inch B35-5006 / Rough Country LED B-C4071 |
| Upper | Sensor relocation engineering and included lighting | Black Horse Armour AB-GM27 |
Types of front bar, compared
| Type | What it is | Pros | Cons | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|---|
| Classic bull bar | A single centre hoop, 2.5–3 in tube, often with a plate | Light, cheap, easy bolt-on, classic look | Centre coverage only; sensor conflicts common; no recovery point | Brush, lights and looks on trucks without sensors |
| Nudge bar | A lower, smaller hoop, common on SUVs | Subtle; least likely to crowd sensors or plates | Least brush coverage of the three | City SUVs that want a light mount and a nudge of protection |
| Full grille guard | Hoop plus headlight wings and uprights across the grille | Widest brush coverage; uprights can host sensor relocators | Heaviest; most sensor surface to manage; costs tow hooks | Ranch trucks that push through brush daily |
The bars below are classic bull bars. If your real requirement is the third row — or a winch — the honest upgrade is a full bumper: see hitch vs bumper mount winches and receiver hitch winch mounts.
Detailed reviews
Each bar is judged on the maker’s own specifications: tube or frame, skid plate, light provision, sensor position, warranty. Owner sections paraphrase real reports and link them; where coverage is thin, the block says so.
Best for Sensor-Equipped Trucks: Black Horse Armour Bull Bar AB-GM27
Sensor-ready pick
Why the Black Horse Armour is our pick
The only bar here designed around the sensors instead of in spite of them. Black Horse drills and caps sensor holes and includes a relocation kit, so a sensor-equipped GM HD keeps its parking aids — the feature every other maker warns you about losing. The included 20-inch LED and bolt-on fit finish the case.
Black Horse Armour Bull Bar AB-GM27 key specs
- Part number: AB-GM27
- Fitment: Silverado/Sierra 2500/3500 HD, 2020–2026
- Construction: cold-rolled mild steel, angular
- Finish: matte black powder coat
- Skid plate: none
- Lights: 20 in LED bar included, with harness
- Sensors: pre-drilled capped holes; relocation kit included
- Install: bolt-on, frame-mounted, no drill
- Warranty: 3 years (this part’s listing; some Armour variants list 1 year)
Black Horse Armour Bull Bar AB-GM27: fits and best for
A heavy-duty GM fitment, and that specificity is the point: the sensor work is engineered per application. For 2020+ Silverado/Sierra HD owners who want the bar-and-light look without giving up parking sensors. Other Armour applications exist, but the verified listing here is this HD part — match the part number. No recovery point is added; see our recovery kit guide.
Black Horse Armour Bull Bar AB-GM27 pros and watch-outs
Pros
- Only maker-stated sensor solution here
- 20 in LED included — no second purchase to add light
- Frame-mounted, bolt-on, no-drill install
- Matte black finish suits modern HD trims
Watch-outs
- No skid plate at all
- Verified fitment is GM HD only
- Warranty varies across the Armour line — confirm your part’s term
- Rushed relocation installs can misalign a sensor
Black Horse Armour Bull Bar AB-GM27: what owners report
Owner coverage for this exact HD part is thin, and we say so plainly. The most instructive report sits on a sibling Armour application for Toyota, where an owner complains the bar kept triggering the sensors — “sensor-compatible” works only when the relocation kit is fitted and aimed.
The wider pattern across Tundras.com sensor threads: owners who plan relocation first are happy; owners who discover the conflict afterwards are not.
Black Horse Armour Bull Bar AB-GM27: who should not buy
Skip it if you want skid-plate coverage — there is none — or if your truck is not a GM HD with a confirmable Armour application. Half-ton owners wanting light alone are better served by the Rough Country.
Black Horse Armour Bull Bar AB-GM27: pair it with
Pair it with a proper recovery plan, not a strap on the bar. Keep rated gear in the truck (safety section below); if you recover often, a bumper with rated points from our heavy-duty truck winch guide is the real fix.

Best Integrated Light: Rough Country LED Bull Bar B-C4071
Light-first pick
Why the Rough Country LED Bull Bar is our pick
It answers the most common reason people buy a bull bar — light — in one box. The 20-inch Black Series LED is integrated into the cross tube, not clamped on; harness, switch and fuse are included; Rough Country rates it at 7,200 lumens and 90 watts. For a GM half-ton on unlit roads, the tidy route.
Rough Country LED Bull Bar B-C4071 key specs
- Part number: B-C4071
- Fitment: Chevy/GMC 1500 & SUV, 2007–2020 family (listing names 2007–2018 4WD Silverado)
- Tube: 3 in diameter steel tubing
- Finish: black powder coat
- Skid plate: none; factory full-coverage aluminium plate must be removed and cannot be reinstalled
- Light: integrated 20 in Black Series LED, Cree LEDs, maker-rated 7,200 lumens / 90 W, harness included
- Sensors/ACC: may interfere; does not fit Adaptive Cruise models
- Tow hooks: removed on Avalanche/Suburban/Tahoe/Yukon; minor pocket trimming there
- Warranty: 5-year limited on the bar; 3-year limited on the light bar
Rough Country LED Bull Bar B-C4071: fits and best for
For GM half-ton and SUV owners whose trucks predate adaptive cruise, or who accept the exclusion. A bolt-on home install — a common first mod alongside our essential accessories basics. With ACC, this is not your bar; the finder will not route you here.
Rough Country LED Bull Bar B-C4071 pros and watch-outs
Pros
- Light integrated — no drilling or mount sourcing
- Real published light figures: 7,200 lumens, 90 W
- Harness, switch and fuse included
- 100% bolt-on; plate bracket in the box
Watch-outs
- No adaptive-cruise fit; may interfere with parking/proximity sensors
- Factory full-coverage skid plate comes off permanently
- Tow hooks come off on SUV applications
- LED is off-road use only, per the maker
Rough Country LED Bull Bar B-C4071: what owners report
Owner discussion of LED bull bars on GM trucks concentrates on light output and tidy fit; the recurring complaint is sensor behaviour on newer trucks, as in the Tacoma World adaptive-cruise thread: bars and radar sensors do not mix unless the maker engineered for them.
Coverage of this exact part is moderate; the facts above come from the maker’s own notes, unusually explicit about exclusions — a point in the bar’s favour.
Rough Country LED Bull Bar B-C4071: who should not buy
Do not buy it with adaptive cruise, if you rely on front parking sensors, or if you want to keep the factory aluminium skid plate. Sensor owners: Black Horse. Plate-keepers: ARIES.
Rough Country LED Bull Bar B-C4071: pair it with
Pair it with disciplined wiring and a light cover. If the truck also runs a winch, keep the systems separate and fused — our winch wiring guide covers battery-side discipline.

Best Classic Bull Bar: Westin Ultimate Bull Bar 32-3875
Classic pick
Why the Westin Ultimate is our pick
The archetype the category copies: a 3-inch vehicle-specific hoop, a stainless skid plate with the logo cut into it, molded caps over the welds and a mount kit in the box. The application chart is deep; the black steel bar carries a 5-year warranty. It earns its place on specification, not nostalgia.
Westin Ultimate Bull Bar 32-3875 key specs
- Part number: 32-3875 (black); LED sibling 32-3875L
- Fitment: Silverado 1500, 2016–2018 (LED sibling adds 2019 LD)
- Tube: 3 in on full-size trucks (2.5 in on smaller applications)
- Material/finish: powder-coated steel; chrome stainless variant
- Skid plate: stainless, die-cut Westin logo; removable brushed stainless on LED version
- Lights: crossbar mounts; optional 20 in LED brackets (32-0045); LED version integrates a 45 W combo bar, 4,050 raw lumens (maker), harness included
- Sensors: will interfere with sensors/camera if equipped (maker)
- Tow hooks/air dam: hooks not re-usable; trimming + air dam cutting
- Install: mount kit included, no drill
- Warranty: 5 years (black steel); LED variant 3 years; chrome lifetime
Westin Ultimate Bull Bar 32-3875: fits and best for
The linked fitment is the 2016–2018 Silverado 1500 — new enough to look right with the bar, old enough that many have no sensors to lose. Westin’s chart covers more trucks under other part numbers (F-150, RAM, Tacoma); treat this as the line’s representative and match your part number. A bar and a bumper winch do not combine — see our pickup winch guide.
Westin Ultimate Bull Bar 32-3875 pros and watch-outs
Pros
- Stainless plate and finished weld caps
- Deep application chart; conflicts published honestly
- 5-year warranty; lifetime on chrome stainless
- Optional factory LED brackets available
Watch-outs
- No verified Amazon listing — dealer purchase; alternative carried below
- Will interfere with parking sensors and front camera (maker notes)
- Factory tow hooks cannot be re-used
- Air dam cutting required
Westin Ultimate Bull Bar 32-3875: what owners report
Westin bars feature in owner threads mainly as the established, no-surprises option. The useful signal here is the Tundras.com thread, where owners fitting guards are pointed to Westin’s own sensor relocator kits — the maker supports the sensor problem even though this bar carries the warning.
Owner coverage of this exact part is thin in the forums checked; the facts above are Westin’s published notes, conflicts included.
Westin Ultimate Bull Bar 32-3875: who should not buy
Do not buy it if your Silverado has parking sensors or a front camera you intend to keep, or if you need your tow hooks — Westin is explicit on both. Sensor owners: the Black Horse alternative is linked below.
Westin Ultimate Bull Bar 32-3875: pair it with
Pair it with Westin’s own 20-inch LED brackets (32-0045) if you add light later. No verified listing was found for them, so they are named without a button.
Alternative: No verified Amazon listing exists for the Westin 32-3875. The closest in-guide alternative with a verified listing — and the only sensor-ready bar here — is the Black Horse Armour; otherwise buy the Westin by exact part number from a Westin dealer.

Best Budget: Tyger Auto Guard Bull Bar TG-GD6C60048
Budget pick
Why the Tyger Auto Guard is our pick
It covers the budget brief: a patented, seamless-welded hoop in textured black, a channel welded in for a future light, plate holes drilled, and a 5-year warranty. For a 2007–2018 GM half-ton, the least money that still buys a designed, fitment-specific bar.
Tyger Auto Guard Bull Bar TG-GD6C60048 key specs
- Part number: TG-GD6C60048
- Fitment: Silverado/Sierra 1500, 2007–2018 incl. 2019 LD/Limited; not 2007 Classic
- Tube: 2.5 in heavy-duty carbon steel tubing, seamless welding
- Finish: textured black E-coating
- Skid plate: none
- Lights: pre-welded channel for optional LEDs (not included)
- Sensors: may interfere with front sensors (maker note)
- Tow hooks: removed if equipped; minor cutting without them
- Weight: about 28 lb (listing figure)
- Warranty: Tyger no-hassle 5-year against manufacturing defects
Tyger Auto Guard Bull Bar TG-GD6C60048: fits and best for
For GMT900 and K2XX GM half-tons, trucks old enough that sensors are uncommon. A driveway bolt-on, and the light channel means the second upgrade is ready when you are. It is also the finder’s “looks first” answer for these trucks.
Tyger Auto Guard Bull Bar TG-GD6C60048 pros and watch-outs
Pros
- Lowest commitment here; 5-year warranty
- Pre-welded channel — no drilling to add lights later
- Seamless-welded 2.5 in carbon steel, textured E-coat
- About 28 lb; hardware and instructions included
Watch-outs
- No skid plate at any price in the Guard line
- 2.5 in tube looks slimmer than 3 in bars on a full-size truck
- May interfere with front sensors
- Tow hooks come off; minor cutting without them
Tyger Auto Guard Bull Bar TG-GD6C60048: what owners report
Owner reports concentrate on fit and finish on high-mileage GM trucks; the listing behind our ASIN carries a deep review pool for a budget bar, themed on straightforward bolt-on fit for the named years.
The cautionary pattern is shared: on the minority of these trucks with front sensors, owners meet the interference the maker warns about — compare the 4Runners.com bull bar thread, where the same surprise plays out on a Toyota.
Tyger Auto Guard Bull Bar TG-GD6C60048: who should not buy
Skip it for a skid plate, a 3-inch visual or included lighting — Rough Country and ARIES cover those briefs. Skip it too if your truck has front sensors you rely on.
Tyger Auto Guard Bull Bar TG-GD6C60048: pair it with
Pair it with an LED bar in the channel when budget allows, and keep the removed tow hooks — you will want a rated recovery option, covered in our shackle guide.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you. Listing shown for Silverado/Sierra 1500, 2007–2018, incl. 2019 LD/Limited — select your truck and year on the listing.
Mark the channel centre before final torque; the later light is a ten-minute job if the channel is square. See our mounting guide.
Best for RAM Trucks: ARIES 3-Inch Bull Bar B35-5006
RAM pick
Why the ARIES 3-Inch is our pick
The most configurable classic bar here: heavy-wall 3-inch steel under E-coat and semi-gloss powder, a removable brushed stainless plate, and two pre-drilled holes for a light bar or work lights. The warranty split — lifetime structure, three years finish, one year parts — is published plainly.
ARIES 3-Inch Bull Bar B35-5006 key specs
- Part number: B35-5006
- Fitment: select Ram 1500/2500/3500 (verify year in ARIES application info)
- Tube: 3 in diameter, heavy-wall tubing, high-strength carbon steel
- Finish: E-coat + semi-gloss black powder
- Skid plate: removable brushed 304 stainless, ARIES cutout pattern
- Lights: two pre-drilled holes for a light bar or two work lights
- Install: no-drill, factory frame holes, vehicle-specific brackets
- Sensors: may interfere with cameras/sensors (maker)
- Weight: 27 lb (listing figure)
- Warranty: limited lifetime (3-yr finish, 1-yr parts)
ARIES 3-Inch Bull Bar B35-5006: fits and best for
RAM owners are the target: the linked listing is the Ram application of a line covering most brands under other part numbers. The removable plate suits a winter daily driver and a summer trailhead truck. If the RAM also tows with a winch, our electric truck winch guide covers that half.
ARIES 3-Inch Bull Bar B35-5006 pros and watch-outs
Pros
- Removable stainless plate — protection or bare bar
- E-coat under powder is the better rust defence at this level
- No-drill fit on factory frame holes
- Pre-drilled holes take a bar or two round lights up to 5.5 in
Watch-outs
- Maker warns of camera/sensor interference
- Finish cover is three years within the lifetime structure — read the split
- Select application years — match the part number, do not assume
ARIES 3-Inch Bull Bar B35-5006: what owners report
Owner signal for the ARIES line is steady rather than loud: a modest, generally positive review pool behind our ASIN, forum mentions focused on the no-drill fit and the plate, and no recurring structural complaint pattern in the sources checked.
The category’s standing owner warning applies too — the Tacoma World thread documents how a bar in front of a radar sensor produces false readings, which is why ARIES prints its sensor note on every application.
ARIES 3-Inch Bull Bar B35-5006: who should not buy
Do not buy it if your RAM’s forward camera or safety sensors are non-negotiable — ARIES will not promise they survive. Want the light included, not provisioned? Rough Country is the one-box answer.
ARIES 3-Inch Bull Bar B35-5006: pair it with
Pair it with two round LED work lights in the drilled holes — the neatest light upgrade here, nothing needs drilling. Wiring discipline: our battery wiring guide.

Run the plate through one winter before removing it — owners who remove it for looks often refit it after the first stone strike.
Best Angular Look: Armordillo AR Series Bull Bar 8714676
Design pick
Why the Armordillo AR Series is our pick
Every other bar here is a bent tube. The AR Series is an angular, multi-faced frame — 3.25 inches wide, 2 inches deep, rolled edges — following the F-150’s lines instead of hiding the grille. It still does the work: a large skid plate, two light mounts, a three-stage matte finish. If looks are the honest reason for buying, this bar admits it.
Armordillo AR Series Bull Bar 8714676 key specs
- Part number: 8714676 (AR Series)
- Fitment: F-150 2004–2024; Expedition 2003–2017; Navigator 2003–2014; Mark LT 2006–2008
- Frame: angular multi-faced, 3.25 in wide x 2 in deep, rolled edges
- Finish: matte black, three-stage, corrosion-resistant
- Skid plate: included, large-area
- Lights: 2 mounts, up to 4 in round or 6 in LED bar
- Sensors: 2021+ F-150 only without parking sensors/ACC (dealer note)
- Install: brackets and hardware included; cutting may be required without tow hooks
- Warranty: not published
Armordillo AR Series Bull Bar 8714676: fits and best for
An F-150 bar first — two decades of the truck under one part number; verify against your exact year. The mesh-style plate keeps radiator airflow while covering the lower front, per dealer descriptions. Owners of 2021+ trucks: read the sensor line twice — this fitment excludes sensors and ACC.
Armordillo AR Series Bull Bar 8714676 pros and watch-outs
Pros
- Only non-tube design here; keeps the grille visible
- Large skid plate included, airflow kept in the design
- Broadest single-part F-150 coverage here: 2004–2024
- Two mounts sized for real auxiliary lights
Watch-outs
- 2021+ fitment excludes sensor/ACC trucks
- Cutting possible on trucks without tow hooks
- Warranty not published on the listing — weakest paperwork here
- Angular frame is style; no strength claim over tube
Armordillo AR Series Bull Bar 8714676: what owners report
Owner coverage for the AR Series is thinner than for the tube bars — we say so rather than pad it. Existing reports centre on the look: owners choose it because it does not hide the grille.
On sensors, the owner record is consistent — see the 4Runners.com owner thread, where a bar marketed as sensor-friendly still blocked a pre-collision sensor. Armordillo’s explicit 2021+ exclusion is the honest version of that story.
Armordillo AR Series Bull Bar 8714676: who should not buy
Do not buy it if your 2021+ F-150 has parking sensors or ACC — the application excludes your truck. If warranty length drives the decision, every other bar here publishes a longer, clearer term.
Armordillo AR Series Bull Bar 8714676: pair it with
Pair it with a compact 6-inch LED bar on the factory mounts, and wash the matte finish non-abrasively. If the F-150 is your recovery vehicle, start from our F-150 winch guide, not this bar.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you. Listing shown for Ford F-150, 2004–2024 — select your truck and year on the listing.
Check grille fit from both front quarters before final torque — the AR frame shows misalignment more than a tube does. Small shimming is normal; forcing it is not.

Fitment & installation
Every bar here is vehicle-specific and bolts to the frame or bumper mounts with the hardware in the box; none needs welding, and only the Westin (air dam) and some no-tow-hook applications ask for trimming. Read the instruction sheet before the truck is apart — the exclusions live there, not in the marketing copy. Work one side at a time, keep brackets loose until the bar is level, torque to the sheet, and re-check after a week.
Three conflicts decide most installs. Tow hooks: Westin’s cannot be re-used on the linked fitment, and Tyger and Rough Country require removal on several applications — plan recovery around a rated point elsewhere, as our snatch block guide assumes. Skid plates: Rough Country’s bar permanently displaces the factory aluminium plate. Sensors: only the Black Horse ships a relocation kit (Westin sells relocators separately, the 40-0015S family), and any relocated sensor needs an empty-lot test before traffic. Install discipline mirrors our winch mounting guide and rear winch install guide.
Safety essentials
Six rules that outrank any bar in this guide:
- 1. A bull bar is brush and light equipment — not crash protection, not a safety device, never a recovery point. No strap, chain or shackle attaches to it.
- 2. Recover only from rated points: a frame-mounted bumper, a rated receiver or the factory recovery points the bar did not displace.
- 3. After fitting, test sensors, camera and adaptive cruise in an empty lot before traffic. If a maker warned of interference, believe the maker.
- 4. Re-torque bracket bolts after the first week and at every service; a loose bar vibrates and rusts at the mounts.
- 5. Wire auxiliary lights on their own fused circuit, and keep them off on public roads where the maker marks them off-road only.
- 6. Tell your insurer the bar is fitted if your policy asks about modifications.
Recovery gear belongs with rated points, not a bull bar — but a truck off pavement should still carry it. These three are from this site’s verified pool and pair with the bumper or receiver setups in our accessories hub:
WARN Epic snatch block — doubles line pull with a winch on a proper mount.
GearAmerica tree saver strap — protects anchor and tree on a winch recovery.
AMBULL shackles — rated connection hardware for the kit.
Build the full kit from our essential accessories guide and tree saver guide, not at the trailhead.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Rust blooming at welds and bracket edges | Stone chips through the powder coat; water at the weld toes | Wash, dry, touch in with matching paint; check brackets each spring |
| Parking sensors beeping at nothing | Bar sits in the sensor field; maker warned of this | Relocate with the maker’s kit (Black Horse includes one) or accept the loss — do not just unplug sensors |
| Adaptive cruise or pre-collision warnings | Radar/camera view blocked by the hoop or plate | Maker excludes your application — remove the bar or go sensor-ready; recalibration is a dealer job |
| Light vibration or flicker at idle | Loose light mounts or a shared, undersized circuit | Torque mounts, wire the light on its own fused circuit, check ground |
| Bar sits crooked after install | Brackets torqued one side at a time while the bar hung uneven | Loosen all bolts, level the bar, torque evenly in sequence |
| Front plate obscured or ticketed | Bar or plate bracket covers the plate | Fit the maker’s relocator (Tyger pre-drills; Westin sells one; Rough Country includes one) |
Who should NOT buy these
You want real front-end protection. A bull bar will not deliver it, and no maker here claims otherwise. If deer strikes, gate posts and trail damage are the real risk, buy a full replacement bumper with rated structure — start with our winch bumper guide, which compares bumpers by mount and rating.
Your truck has sensors or ACC you rely on. Four of six makers warn you in writing. Unless the Black Horse fits and you fit its relocation kit properly, the honest purchase is no bar.
You need a winch or a front recovery point. No bar here mounts a winch or rates a recovery point, and most cost you the tow hooks. That build starts at truck winches and a bumper or receiver mount.
You will not maintain a finish. Powder-coated steel lives in the stone spray. If washing and touch-ins will never happen, buy stainless where offered or stay stock.

FAQ
Are bull bars worth it?
Worth it for the three jobs they do: deflecting brush and minor contact, carrying lights and changing the look. Not worth it as protection equipment, because no maker rates them for crashes. Buy one with that job description and the value is fair; buy one expecting armour and physics will disappoint you.
Do bull bars protect your truck in a crash?
No maker here claims crash protection, and we do not claim it for them. A bull bar is a bolt-on hoop; in a real collision the engineered crumple structure is the bumper and frame behind it, and a bar can change how that structure and the sensors behave. If crash performance is the concern, keep the stock front end or buy an engineered bumper.
Will a bull bar interfere with parking sensors or adaptive cruise?
Often, yes. Four of six makers here print an interference warning or an outright exclusion: Rough Country does not fit adaptive-cruise models, and Armordillo’s 2021+ F-150 fitment excludes sensors/ACC. The exception is the Black Horse Armour, with sensor holes and a relocation kit. Whatever you fit, test every assistance feature in an empty lot afterwards.
Do bull bars affect airbags?
Airbag deployment is triggered by deceleration sensors, and makers do not certify bull bars as part of that system. A bar changes the mass and stiffness at the very front of the truck, which is why the makers here sell bars as brush and light equipment only. If airbag behaviour decides it for you, keep the factory front end.
Bull bar vs grille guard: what is the difference?
A bull bar is a single centre hoop. A grille guard adds uprights and headlight wings across the whole grille — more coverage, more weight, more sensor surface. A nudge bar is the smaller, lower cousin common on SUVs. The types table above compares them; this guide reviews classic bull bars.
Can you mount a winch on a bull bar?
No — not on any bar here, and not on the type generally. There is no winch tray, no rated mount and no recovery point. Winching belongs on a bumper or receiver mount engineered for line pull. Never pull from a bull bar.
Do you have to remove tow hooks to fit a bull bar?
Frequently. Westin states the hooks cannot be re-used on the linked Silverado fitment, and Tyger and Rough Country require removal on several applications — the brackets use the same space. Keep the hooks, and know your remaining rated recovery point before you need it.
Are bull bars legal?
Widely sold and fitted in the US, but rules vary by state and country, and some jurisdictions restrict rigid front bars on pedestrian-safety grounds. Front plate visibility rules also apply — hence the plate relocators several makers include or sell. Check local rules before ordering, especially outside the US.
How hard is it to install a bull bar?
Most bars here are bolt-on driveway jobs with the mount kit included: ARIES and Black Horse are no-drill, Westin asks for air dam cutting, Armordillo warns cutting may be needed without tow hooks. Budget an hour or two, a torque wrench, and a second pair of hands to hold the bar level.
