Best Parking for Trail of Lights
How we researched this guide
We compared the Austin Trail of Lights parking options and checked the organiser’s 2026 ticket pages and Austin event guides. The organiser’s own FAQ and ticket pages are the authority for prices and shuttle nights; this guide reports them as published for the 2026 season and tells you to check your ticket email before you travel, because the organiser’s pages and the city’s pages have disagreed on details.
No product was tested by us and no result is presented as a test outcome. Maker and official-source claims are written as claims, not as our findings.
The 30-second answer
For the Austin Trail of Lights at Zilker Park, 10 to 23 December 2026, the best parking is the option you book in advance: a pre-paid close-in pass for the Zilker Tree (Polo Field) lot if you want to park at the park, the Austin High surface lot if you accept about a mile’s walk, or the free Toney Burger shuttle on paid nights (12 and 18 to 23 December), where parking is free and the shuttle pass includes admission. There is no parking sold on site, and parking in surrounding neighbourhoods is prohibited and enforced.
The Austin Trail of Lights is a walking trail, not a drive-through: the trail itself is about 1.25 miles, and most visitors walk roughly 2.5 miles once the walks to and from parking are counted. That makes the parking decision the evening, not an afterthought. Get it wrong and you spend the night circling closed streets; get it right and you walk in calmly. This guide covers the four real ways in — close-in pre-paid parking, the Austin High lot, the Toney Burger shuttle, and rideshare or transit — with the 2026 dates, prices and rules as the organiser published them.

| Zilker Tree (Polo Field) lot | Pre-paid pass, about $25–$35 per vehicle | Trail nights, lots open 5.30pm | Across from the Grand Entrance |
| Austin High surface lot | Pre-paid pass, about $25–$35 per vehicle | Trail nights, lots open 5.30pm | About a mile, along Cesar Chavez St |
| Toney Burger shuttle | $10 per rider, includes admission | Paid nights: 12 and 18–23 Dec | Dedicated lane at Grand Entrance |
| Rideshare drop-off | Rideshare fare | Trail nights | 2107 Veterans Dr, then footbridge |

Option 1: Zilker Tree (Polo Field) parking, the closest lot
The Zilker Tree lot, on the Polo Field near the Zilker Tree and across from the trail’s Grand Entrance, is the closest parking to the event. It is available only with a pre-paid parking pass bought online in advance, in limited numbers each night, and no parking is sold on site. Lots open at 5.30pm and passes are good until 10pm. The organiser’s ticket pages warn not to follow ordinary GPS directions to the lot, because street closures are in effect on trail nights: follow the driving route printed on your parking ticket instead, and enter from the MoPac side, with no on-site parking access from Barton Springs Road. Accessible parking is available in this lot with a pre-paid pass plus a state-issued placard or plate. This is the best choice if someone in your group cannot walk far, or if you want the shortest walk back to the car at the end of a cold night.
Option 2: Austin High surface lot, the longer walk
The Austin High surface lot, at 1715 W Cesar Chavez Street, is the second close-in option, also pre-paid online only and also opening at 5.30pm. It sits about a mile from the entrance, reached on foot along Cesar Chavez Street, so it suits visitors who are happy to walk and who want a cheaper or more available pass when the Polo Field lot sells out. The walk is on city streets rather than through the park, so wear comfortable shoes and allow time for it in both directions. If you book this lot, treat the mile each way as part of the evening: the trail itself is 1.25 miles, so a visit from this lot is roughly 4.5 miles of walking in total.
Option 3: the Toney Burger shuttle, the best option on paid nights
On the paid nights — 12 December and 18 to 23 December — the shuttle from the Toney Burger Activity Center, 3200 Jones Road in South Austin, is the best parking option for most visitors. Parking at Toney Burger is free for shuttle riders, shuttles leave for Zilker between 5.30 and 8.30pm, and riders enter at 7pm through a dedicated lane at the Grand Entrance. A shuttle pass costs about $10 per person and includes general admission, so a family of four with school-age children needs four passes. The last shuttle back leaves Zilker at 10.45pm. Passes can be bought online or at the shuttle location, but buying with your tickets is the safer plan, because the shuttle only runs on those seven paid nights and does not run on the free nights. If your night is a free night, the shuttle is not an option at all.
Option 4: rideshare, bus and bike
If you do not want to park at all, the designated rideshare drop-off is 2107 Veterans Drive, followed by a walk over the footbridge toward the entrance. Expect surge pricing and heavy drop-off traffic on Barton Springs Road on busy nights, and agree a pickup point with your driver before the event ends, because the same congestion applies on the way out. CapMetro bus lines serve the area, and bike racks sit across Barton Springs Road from the Grand Entrance. These options work best for visitors staying nearby or downtown, and for anyone who would rather not drive in Zilker Park traffic at all.
What not to do
Do not drive to Zilker Park hoping to buy parking on the night: the organiser states plainly that parking will not be sold on site, and close-in passes sell out. Do not park in the surrounding neighbourhoods: the organiser’s FAQ states that neighbourhood parking is prohibited and enforced. Do not follow your sat-nav to the Polo Field lot on the night: street closures change the route, and the ticket’s driving directions are the ones that work. And do not assume the shuttle runs on your night: it runs only on the seven paid nights, so a free-night visit needs a pre-paid lot pass, a rideshare, a bus or a bike instead.
How to choose your parking
Paid night or free night?
Admission is free on 10, 11 and 13 to 17 December, and $8 for ages 12 and up on 12 and 18 to 23 December, with children 11 and under free with a ticketed adult. On a paid night the Toney Burger shuttle is usually the best value, because the $10 pass includes admission and parking is free. On a free night there is no shuttle, so a pre-paid lot pass is the plan.
Who is walking?
With small children, older visitors or anyone with limited mobility, book the Zilker Tree (Polo Field) lot and its accessible parking if you need it. With able walkers, the Austin High lot saves nothing in money but is often available when the Polo Field lot is sold out, and the mile’s walk is manageable. With a group, compare the shuttle honestly: four $10 passes cost about $40, against $25 to $35 for one parking pass plus $8 admission each on a paid night.
What time are you arriving?
Lots open at 5.30pm and the trail runs 7 to 10pm. Arriving at 5.30pm gives you the calmest entry; arriving after 7pm puts you in the peak queue. Shuttle riders should aim for the earlier departures, because the last shuttle out leaves at 8.30pm and the last shuttle back leaves Zilker at 10.45pm.
Your night, step by step
Buy admission, parking or shuttle passes together, online, in advance, and read the directions in your ticket email rather than trusting GPS. Leave early enough to park, walk and queue before 7pm. Dress for a long outdoor walk in December, including the walk back to the car or shuttle, and bring layers rather than one heavy coat. Keep your parking pass and your admission or shuttle pass together, because they are separate purchases and both are needed. And check the organiser’s site on the day: passes are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged or replaced if lost, so a lost pass is a lost evening.
