A compression test is the fastest honest answer to a tired engine: it tells you whether low power, hard starting or oil burning traces to the cylinders or somewhere else entirely. The right kit threads cleanly into your plug holes, holds its reading while you look at it, and covers the thread sizes your engines actually use. This guide compares five verified kits from OTC and BETOOLL on gauge range, adapters and hose design. See the full Compression Testers archive for the category. The 30-second answer
Buy the OTC 5605 Deluxe kit first for broad gasoline-engine coverage, the OTC 5606 when a simpler kit fits your fleet, the BETOOLL 9-piece kit for a budget all-rounder with a spark plug tester, the BETOOLL HW0130 for quick push-on checks, and the BETOOLL 9-piece kit with feeler gauge when plug gaps are part of the same job.
How we researched this guide
We compared 5 compression tester kits with verified US Amazon listings, then checked maker documentation for each finalist: OTC kit manuals and specification pages (5605 gauge 0 to 300 psi, deep-well and Ford Triton adapters; 5606 gasoline-engine coverage) and BETOOLL listing specifications (0 to 300 psi triple-range gauges, brass adapters, rubber cone ends). Only kits with a verifiable listing and published specifications made the final five.
We also reviewed owner reports on the product listings and independent diagnostic write-ups, paraphrased and linked in each product block. Owner coverage is strongest for the OTC kits and thinner for BETOOLL, and we say so where it matters. No engine was tested for this guide and no readings were invented; every figure below comes from a maker or listing specification.

How to choose a compression tester
Engine type: gasoline only, or diesel too
Every kit here is for gasoline engines. Diesel compression runs far higher and needs a diesel-specific tester with different adapters and gauge range. Buying a gasoline kit for a diesel wastes money and gives meaningless readings. Diesel engines need a different tester family altogether, so confirm fuel type before comparing gauge ranges or adapters.
Gauge range and readability
A 0 to 300 psi gauge covers virtually all gasoline engines, and a 2.5- to 3-inch face with a protective boot is easier to read while cranking. Digital gauges record readings, but analog gauges are simpler, need no battery and are easier to trust at a glance. A readable dial at arm’s length beats a wider range you cannot see clearly under a bonnet in poor light.
Adapter coverage
Count your engines’ plug thread sizes before buying: 10, 12, 14 and 18 mm cover most gasoline work, but recessed plug wells need a deep-well connector and some Ford Triton heads need a 16 mm adapter. The OTC 5605 exists for exactly those awkward cases. List your engines’ plug threads first, then buy the kit that covers them, rather than trusting a headline adapter count.
Threaded versus push-on
Threaded adapters seal best and give the most repeatable numbers. Rubber cone ends are faster for quick checks but can leak if tilted. Use push-on for triage and threaded adapters for any reading you will act on. Threaded adapters seal more surely on awkward plugs, while push-on cones win when you must test cylinders in quick succession.
Hose length and release
A longer hose puts the gauge where you can see it from the driver’s seat or beside the engine, and a side release button speeds sequential cylinder tests. Both features matter more than they sound on a multi-cylinder engine. A side release valve saves repeated refitting, and a longer hose keeps the gauge where you can actually read it.
Case and organisation
Adapters are small, numerous and easy to lose. A hard case with labelled slots keeps the kit complete between jobs, which is when most kits quietly lose the one adapter you need next. A lidded hard case keeps adapters together between jobs, which matters because one missing adapter can stall a diagnosis.

Best Overall: OTC 5605 Deluxe Compression Tester Kit
Best Overall
Why the OTC 5605 Deluxe Compression Tester Kit is our pick
OTC’s 5605 is the kit that covers the awkward engines, not just the easy ones. Alongside standard adapters it includes a deep-well connector for recessed plug wells and a Ford Triton adapter for 16 mm thread plugs, plus a 25-inch flexible hose and a 2.5-inch gauge reading 0 to 300 psi. That adapter spread is why it leads this guide: a compression tester that cannot thread into your engine is a paperweight.

- Widest adapter spread here
- Deep-well and Triton adapters
- Long readable hose
- Protective gauge boot
- Hard case included
- Gasoline only, not diesel
- Analog gauge needs manual recording
- Heavier kit than budget testers
OTC 5605 Deluxe Compression Tester Kit: what owners report
Owners on the listing describe the 5605 as the kit that finally threaded into recessed heads where cheaper kits failed, and praise the hose length for readable tests. The recurring watch-out is the analog gauge: you must record readings yourself, cylinder by cylinder. Reports are paraphrased from the listing linked in this block. Further owner discussion: Garage Journal tool forums; the listing carries the owner reports paraphrased above.
OTC 5605 Deluxe Compression Tester Kit: who should not buy
Skip this kit if you only own one simple engine with standard plug threads, or if you need diesel testing. The OTC 5606 or a budget BETOOLL kit covers the simple case for less bulk.

Tip: test with the throttle open and all plugs removed for consistent readings. See also our guide to Best Automotive Multimeters Under 100.
Best Simple Kit: OTC 5606 Compression Tester Kit
Best Simple Kit
Why the OTC 5606 Compression Tester Kit is our pick
The 5606 is the 5605’s simpler sibling: an OTC gasoline-engine compression tester for domestic, import, motorcycle and marine engines with standard threads. It trades some of the deluxe kit’s specialty adapters for a smaller, easier-to-carry package. For a reader whose engines all use standard plug threads, that trade is sensible; the specialty adapters of the 5605 only earn their keep on recessed or Triton heads.
OTC 5606 Compression Tester Kit key specs
- Part number 5606
- Gasoline engines
- Domestic, import, motorcycle, marine
- Standard thread adapters
- Analog gauge
- Blow-moulded hard case

- Maker: OTC
- Format: threaded adapters
- Not for diesel
- Case: hard, lidded
- Warranty: maker standard
OTC 5606 Compression Tester Kit: fits and best for
This kit fits owners of standard gasoline engines who want OTC build without the deluxe kit’s adapter sprawl. Motorcycles and small engines are in scope, which matters for readers with mixed fleets. Check your plug thread sizes first: if any engine needs a deep-well or Triton adapter, step up to the 5605.
OTC 5606 Compression Tester Kit pros and watch-outs
- OTC build quality
- Simpler, lighter kit
- Motorcycle and marine coverage
- Hard case included
- Straightforward analog readings
- Fewer specialty adapters than the 5605

OTC 5606 Compression Tester Kit: what owners report
Owners comparing the two OTC kits describe the 5606 as the right size for a home garage that never sees recessed heads, and note the case keeps the kit together between jobs. Coverage specific to the 5606 is thinner than for the 5605, so we lean on OTC’s shared kit documentation here. See the listing linked in this block. Further owner discussion: Garage Journal tool forums; the listing carries the owner reports paraphrased above.
OTC 5606 Compression Tester Kit: who should not buy
Skip this kit if any engine in your fleet has recessed plug wells or Triton heads; buy the 5605 instead and avoid a second purchase.

Best for Tune-Up Jobs: BETOOLL 9-Piece Kit with Feeler Gauge
Best for Tune-Up Jobs
Why the BETOOLL 9-Piece Kit with Feeler Gauge is our pick
This BETOOLL 9-piece kit adds a 32-blade steel feeler gauge to the standard 300 psi compression tester, which suits tune-up work where plug gaps get checked in the same session as compression. The triple-range gauge reads 0 to 300 psi, 0 to 20 bar and 0 to 21 kg per square centimetre, and four connector adapters cover common gasoline threads. It is the kit for the reader who services their own ignition system end to end.
BETOOLL 9-Piece Kit with Feeler Gauge key specs
- 9 pieces
- Gauge 0 to 300 psi triple range
- 32-blade steel feeler gauge
- 4 connector adapters

Fitment and testing basics
Prepare the engine the same way every time: warm it if the maker directs, remove all spark plugs, open the throttle, and disable fuel and ignition as your service manual instructs. Consistent preparation is what makes cylinder-to-cylinder comparisons meaningful; a cold, closed-throttle test on one cylinder cannot be compared with a warm test on another. See our guide to best automotive multimeters under 100 for the electrical checks that complement compression testing.
Thread adapters by hand first and never force a cross-threaded adapter into an aluminium head. Seat the gauge where you can read it, crank the same number of revolutions per cylinder, and record each reading in firing order before releasing pressure. A single low cylinder points to valves, rings or gasket; evenly low readings across all cylinders point elsewhere. Our best brake bleeder kit one person guide covers the same record-as-you-go discipline for brake work.
After testing, release pressure with the gauge button, remove adapters carefully, and refit plugs to the maker’s torque specification. Store adapters in the case immediately; the adapter you lose is always the one your next engine needs. See best battery charger under 100 for the charging checks that belong beside any no-start diagnosis.

Safety essentials
- Let a hot engine cool enough to work on without burns before removing plugs.
- Disable fuel and ignition as the service manual directs before cranking for a test.
- Keep hands, clothing and tools clear of belts, fans and moving parts while cranking.
- Wear eye protection; compressed air and debris can escape from plug holes.
- Never crank an engine with loose adapters that could eject under pressure.
- Work in a ventilated area and keep ignition sources away from fuel vapour.
Three picks from this guide support safe testing: a long hose keeps you clear of moving parts, and a proper case keeps adapters from becoming loose hazards.
OTC 5605 Deluxe Compression Tester Kit: The broad-coverage kit: deep-well and specialty adapters, a long hose and a 0 to 300 psi gauge.
OTC 5606 Compression Tester Kit: OTC quality in a simpler gasoline-engine kit for standard plug threads.
BETOOLL 9-Piece Compression Tester with Spark Plug Tester: A 300 psi kit plus a spark plug tester, covering cars and motorcycles in one small box.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| One cylinder reads low | Valve, ring or gasket fault on that cylinder | Retest threaded, then follow the service manual’s leak-down path |
| All cylinders read low | Test method or gauge fault, or general wear | Recheck preparation and throttle position, then verify the gauge |
| Reading will not hold | Leaking adapter seal or gauge valve | Reseat the adapter, check O-rings, retest |
| Adapter will not thread | Wrong thread size or damaged threads | Stop, confirm thread size, never force it |
| Gauge reads zero | Blocked hose or unseated cone | Check the hose and reseat the cone squarely |
| Inconsistent repeat readings | Varying crank revolutions or throttle | Standardise revolutions and throttle position per cylinder |
Who should NOT buy these compression testers
Diesel owners should not buy any kit here. Diesel compression pressures and adapters are a different world, and a gasoline kit gives readings that mean nothing. Buy a diesel-specific tester instead, and see our best automotive multimeters under 100 guide for the electrical side of diesel diagnosis.
Single-engine owners should not buy the deluxe spread. If your one car uses standard threads, the OTC 5605’s specialty adapters are dead weight. A simpler kit leaves money for the next diagnostic tool.
Nobody should buy a tester for a number they will not act on. A compression test earns its keep only when low readings lead to a repair decision. If the plan is to ignore the result, skip the tool.
Shops should not rely on push-on readings alone. Cones are for triage. Any reading that decides an engine rebuild deserves a threaded retest with a documented sequence.

FAQ
What does a compression test actually tell me?
It measures how well each cylinder seals and builds pressure. A healthy engine shows even readings across cylinders; a single low cylinder points toward that cylinder’s valves, rings or head gasket, while evenly low readings suggest general wear or a test-method problem.
What is a good compression reading?
There is no universal good number: it varies by engine design, so compare your readings with the maker’s specification and, more importantly, with each other. Variation between cylinders matters more than any single absolute figure, and your service manual gives the allowed spread.
Should the engine be warm or cold for the test?
Follow your service manual. Many makers specify a warm engine with all plugs removed and the throttle open, because that standardises the test. Whatever you choose, test every cylinder the same way or the comparison is meaningless.
Can I test a diesel engine with these kits?
No. Diesel compression pressures are far higher and the adapters differ. These kits are gasoline-only, and using one on a diesel gives meaningless readings and risks damaging the gauge.
Threaded or push-on adapters: which is better?
Threaded adapters seal best and give the most repeatable numbers, so use them for any reading you will act on. Push-on cones are faster for quick triage but can leak if tilted, so retest suspicious push-on readings threaded.
Why does one cylinder read low?
Common causes are a leaking valve, worn rings or a head-gasket fault on that cylinder. A retest confirms the reading, and a leak-down test then narrows the cause. Do not condemn an engine on one unrepeated reading.
Do I need to remove all spark plugs?
Yes for a comparable test. Removing all plugs lets the engine crank evenly and quickly, so each cylinder gets the same cranking speed. Testing with other plugs still fitted skews the comparison.
What is the Ford Triton adapter for?
Some Ford Triton heads use 16 mm thread plugs in recessed wells that standard adapters cannot reach cleanly. The OTC 5605 includes that adapter, which is why it leads this guide for mixed fleets.
How often should I compression-test an engine?
When symptoms point that way: hard starting, misfires, oil burning, coolant loss or a used-car purchase. Routine annual testing is unnecessary on a healthy, well-running engine.
