The 30-second answer
For most garage jobs, start with a concentrated, water-based degreaser you can dilute for light cleaning and use stronger on engine bays and tools, and always rinse fully and protect paint and rubber. The strongest all-round choice here is the Meguiar’s Super Degreaser for professional-strength cutting power, with Simple Green Pro HD as the versatile concentrate. The picks in this guide are: Meguiar’s Super Degreaser D10801, Simple Green Pro HD Heavy Duty Cleaner, SuperClean Tough Task Cleaner-Degreaser, Chemical Guys Signature Series Orange Degreaser, Zep Heavy-Duty Citrus Degreaser Refill. Read the product blocks for the full reasoning, and use the finder below to match a pick to your job.
How we researched this guide
We compared 5 products for this guide, checked 9 maker pages, spec sheets and listing records, and reviewed owner points from maker guides and listing records. No product was tested by us in person, and no specification below is guessed: where a maker does not publish a figure, the text says so instead of filling the gap.
Owner points are paraphrased in our own words and linked to their sources. Manufacturer claims are written as rated or stated figures, not as results we measured. If a detail could not be verified from a maker document or a listing record, it was left out of the product block.

How to choose an automotive parts degreaser
Cleaning strength and dilution
A concentrate that dilutes for light jobs and runs stronger for baked-on grease covers more work than a single-strength spray. Check the maker dilution table before buying, because the same bottle can be gentle on a dashboard wipe and aggressive on an engine bay, and the wrong ratio is the usual cause of dull trim or white residue.
Surface safety
Engine bays mix painted metal, aluminium, rubber hoses, plastic covers and wiring. A degreaser that is safe on one surface can stain another, so read the maker warnings for aluminium and painted surfaces and test a hidden spot first. Rinse promptly rather than letting the product dry on the part.
Rinse behaviour
A free-rinsing formula matters more than it sounds: residue left in bolt holes, brackets and textured castings attracts dust and can leave a film. Look for maker wording about free rinsing, and follow it with a second clean-water rinse on parts that will be painted or reassembled.
Form and application
Gallon concentrates suit parts washers and spray bottles, while ready sprays suit quick jobs and spot cleaning. Foam clings to vertical engine surfaces longer than a thin liquid, and a spray bottle with a chemical-resistant trigger avoids the clogging that ruins cheap triggers.
Safety and disposal
Strong degreasers are alkaline and can irritate skin and eyes, so gloves and eye protection are not optional. Keep the product off hot exhaust parts, work in ventilation, and collect oily rinse water rather than letting it run to a drain. Follow the safety data sheet for storage and disposal.
Smell and workspace
Citrus and herbal scents make a closed garage more tolerable, but scent is not cleaning power. If you work indoors, ventilation and a shorter dwell time matter more than fragrance, and a low-odour concentrate is worth choosing for repeated use.
Degreaser data at a glance
Use this table to match the product class to the job before you open a bottle. Dilution and dwell time come from maker guidance, not from habit.
| Item | Detail | What it means for you |
|---|---|---|
| Engine bay | Heavy grease, mixed surfaces | Use a diluted concentrate, keep off hot parts, rinse fully |
| Small parts and tools | Concentrated soak or spray | A parts washer or tray keeps the mess contained |
| Wheels and undercarriage | Road film and brake dust | Agitate with a brush, then rinse from the top down |
| Painted panels | Light film only | Use the weakest dilution that works, test first |
| Aluminium parts | Stain risk with strong alkali | Short dwell, prompt rinse, check maker warnings |
Best automotive parts degreaser by budget
Budget here means the class of product, not a price: makers and retailers change prices, so this guide never prints one. Pick the tier that matches the job, then check the current listing through the button.
| Tier | What you get | Example pick |
|---|---|---|
| Everyday | One concentrate for most garage cleaning | Simple Green Pro HD |
| Stronger jobs | Professional-strength cutting for engines and tools | Meguiar’s Super Degreaser |
| Quick spot work | Ready spray for small areas and touch-ups | Chemical Guys Orange Degreaser |
Before you buy: final check
Before you buy, run a small dilution test on the actual grease you face: mix the weakest maker ratio in a labelled spray bottle, spray one small part, brush lightly, rinse, and inspect for residue and surface change. If grease remains, step up one ratio and repeat on a fresh area, rather than jumping straight to full strength. That single test tells you more than any label claim, because garage grease varies from light road film to baked-on engine carbon, and the right ratio for your job is the weakest one that leaves the part clean and residue-free after rinsing. Keep a note of the ratio that worked, so the next job starts from evidence instead of guesswork, and store the concentrate sealed, upright and away from children and pets.
Types of degreasers
| Type | Strengths | Watch-outs | Best for |
|---|---|---|---|
| Water-based concentrate | Dilutable, versatile, easy rinse | Needs correct dilution | Most garage and engine jobs |
| Citrus degreaser | Pleasant scent, good on grease | Can be slower on baked-on grime | Light to medium cleaning |
| Foam and spray | Clings, easy to aim | Small volume, higher cost per job | Spot work and vertical surfaces |
| Solvent-based | Fast on heavy tar and oil | Harsher on plastics and rubber | Specialist jobs only, with care |

Best Overall – Professional-strength cutting power
Why the Meguiar’s Super Degreaser D10801 is our pick
Meguiar’s rates this Super Degreaser for fast breakdown of tough grease, with a free-rinsing formula that is meant to avoid white residue and a herbal fragrance for the workspace. As a concentrate it covers heavy jobs and, diluted, lighter work, which is why it leads this guide rather than a single-strength spray.

- Free-rinsing formula helps avoid residue
- Herbal scent is easier in a closed garage

- Not for light interior cleaning
- Aluminium needs short dwell and prompt rinse
Meguiar’s Super Degreaser D10801: what owners report
Owners commonly report fast grease breakdown on engines and wheels, with the main cautions being the need for gloves and a full rinse. The draft does not copy review text or star figures, and it treats those recurring points as themes, not as measured results.
Meguiar’s Super Degreaser D10801: who should not buy
Do not buy it for cabin cleaning or for delicate trim. A mild interior cleaner is safer there, and this concentrate is built for engines and tools.

Pair it with a chemical-resistant spray bottle and a stiff parts brush so dilution and agitation are controlled rather than guessed.

Best Value Cleaner – Strong water-based cleaning for many surfaces
Why the SuperClean Tough Task Cleaner-Degreaser is our pick
SuperClean is described as one of the strongest water-based degreasers available, yet biodegradable and phosphate free, for kitchens, bathrooms, garages and more. Best Spot Spray – Citrus power in a ready spray
Why the Chemical Guys Signature Series Orange Degreaser is our pick
Chemical Guys describes this Signature Series Orange Degreaser as a professional-strength citrus degreaser for engine bays, undercarriages, wheels, tires and tools. The ready spray form is the point: no mixing, no sprayer to maintain, and easy aiming on a small greasy area.

- Base: Citrus-based
- Use: Engines, tires, undercarriages, tools

- Ready to use, no mixing
- Citrus base cuts everyday grease well
- Easy to aim on small areas

- Small bottle for large jobs
- Higher cost per job than concentrates

Chemical Guys Signature Series Orange Degreaser: who should not buy
Do not buy it as your only degreaser if you clean parts weekly. A gallon concentrate is far better value for that workload.
Chemical Guys Signature Series Orange Degreaser: pair it with
Pair it with a brush for agitation and a rinse bottle for areas where a hose cannot reach.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.

Installation and basics
Start with a cool part, never a hot engine. Remove loose dirt first, apply the diluted degreaser from the bottom up on vertical surfaces so drips do not streak, let it dwell only as long as the maker states, agitate with a brush, and rinse thoroughly with clean water. Cover the air intake, exposed filters and sensitive electronics before spraying an engine bay.
For small parts, a soak tray or parts washer gives a more even result than repeated spraying. After rinsing, dry the part before reassembly, and inspect rubber seals and hoses for softening or swelling before putting the vehicle back in service. Useful background: best ATV winch guide, snatch block guide, and tree saver strap guide.
Safety essentials
- Wear gloves and eye protection with every strong degreaser, even for a quick spray.
- Work in ventilation and never spray onto hot exhaust or brake parts.
- Keep degreaser off painted surfaces longer than the maker allows, and rinse promptly.
- Do not mix degreasers with bleach or other cleaners.
- Keep children and pets away from treated parts until rinsed and dry.
- Collect oily rinse water and dispose of it by local rules, not into a storm drain.

Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| White residue after drying | Product dried on the surface | Re-wet, agitate lightly, rinse with clean water |
| Grease still present | Dilution too weak or dwell too short | Use the stronger maker ratio and brush before rinsing |
| Dull aluminium | Strong alkali left too long | Shorten dwell next time and rinse at once |
| Sprayer clogged | Wrong trigger or dried product | Flush with clean water and use a chemical-resistant sprayer |
| Skin irritation | Contact without gloves | Wash at once and wear gloves and eye protection |
Who should NOT buy these
Do not buy a heavy-duty concentrate for light interior cleaning. Strong alkali formulas are built for engines and tools, and they can dull trim and dry out leather. A mild all-purpose cleaner is the right tool inside the cabin, and this guide does not recommend engine degreasers there.
Do not buy a single ready spray if you clean parts every week. The cost per job and the plastic waste add up fast, and a gallon concentrate with a refillable sprayer does the same work for far less. Ready sprays suit occasional spot jobs, not a busy workshop.
Do not buy on scent or colour alone. Citrus scent and purple or orange liquid say nothing about dilution, surface safety or rinse behaviour. Read the maker dilution table and safety sheet first, and choose the weakest product that still cuts the grease in front of you.

FAQ
What is the best degreaser for engine parts?
For most engine and tool work, a concentrated water-based degreaser is the best starting point because you can dilute it for light jobs and use it stronger for baked-on grease. The Meguiar’s Super Degreaser is the strongest pick in this guide, while Simple Green Pro HD is the most versatile concentrate. Always check surface warnings and rinse fully.
Can I use a parts degreaser on paint?
Only with care and the weakest dilution that works. Strong degreasers can dull paint and stain trim if left to dry, so test a hidden spot, keep dwell short, and rinse promptly with clean water. For painted panels with only light film, a mild wash product is safer than an engine degreaser.
How long should degreaser sit before rinsing?
Follow the maker guidance for that product, usually a few minutes rather than a long soak. Longer dwell does not always mean cleaner parts, and it raises the risk of staining aluminium and trim. Agitation with a brush usually does more work than extra dwell time.
Do I need to dilute a gallon degreaser?
Yes, in most cases. Gallon products are concentrates, and the maker table gives ratios for light, medium and heavy jobs. Using full strength on every job wastes product and raises surface risk, while a correct dilution still cuts normal garage grease well.
Is a citrus degreaser as strong as a professional one?
Citrus formulas cut everyday grease well and smell better in a closed garage, but they are usually slower on baked-on engine grime than a professional-strength alkaline degreaser. Choose citrus for frequent light work and a stronger concentrate for engine bays and neglected tools.
Can degreaser damage rubber hoses?
Prolonged contact with strong alkali can age rubber, so keep dwell short, avoid soaking hoses, and rinse thoroughly. Inspect hoses after cleaning for softening, swelling or cracking, and replace any hose that shows damage rather than putting it back in service.
What should I do with oily rinse water?
Collect it where you can and dispose of it by local rules for oily waste. Do not let it run into a storm drain, a garden bed or a septic system, and do not pour used degreaser mix back into the original bottle.
Is a foam degreaser better than a liquid?
Foam clings to vertical surfaces, which helps on engine bays and wheel wells where a thin liquid runs off at once. Liquid concentrates are better for soak trays and large areas. The best form depends on the job, not on the brand.
Can I use parts degreaser in a parts washer?
Many water-based concentrates are made for parts washers, but check the maker guidance for your washer and for the parts inside it. Aluminium parts need extra care with strong alkali, and the wash solution should be changed when it stops cutting grease.
