BlitzBed Sleeping Platform Review (2026): Specs & Verdict

Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This comes at no extra cost to you.

How we researched this guide

This is a single-product review of one platform: the BlitzBed Sleeping Platform by TrunkMate of Costa Mesa, California, checked against the maker’s SUV, minivan and add-on listings and its full FAQ page — every dimension, weight and capacity below comes from those maker pages, including the two places where TrunkMate’s own figures disagree with each other, which this review prints as conflicts rather than resolving quietly. We also checked the BlitzBed’s Amazon availability directly, twice over, and set it against three alternatives whose Amazon listings we opened and verified line by line.

Owner evidence came from the two review aggregators that carry BlitzBed owners — Birdeye and Trustindex — paraphrased and linked in the owner section, with the honest caveat that independent forum coverage of this small maker is thin. We do not test products. Maker claims are written as the maker states them, the category home for this review is our sleeping platforms archive, and the wider context is the car camping and overlanding section.

The 30-second answer

Buy the BlitzBed if you sleep in your SUV or minivan often enough that a flat, level, rigid bed is worth a made-to-order purchase: it levels an uneven cargo floor, adjusts from 50 to 76 inches long, folds into a 24-inch square in the trunk, and is rated by TrunkMate for 275 lb as a single. Know the two catches before you order: it is sold direct from TrunkMate only — there is no Amazon listing — and it includes no mattress. If you want the sleep-flat job done from Amazon instead, the D-Hive SUV Air Mattress fills the cargo area directly, the Ciremiv SUV Air Mattress is the bundle to lay on a platform or a flat floor, and the LOSTHORIZON Air and Foam Mattress is the foam-comfort layer.

Reviewed Here: Rigid Folding Platform

BlitzBed Sleeping Platform

The unit under review: TrunkMate’s Baltic birch and aluminium platform that levels an uneven cargo floor and folds into the trunk. Best if you car-camp often and want a rigid, removable bed rather than a conversion. Sold direct from TrunkMate only — there is no Amazon listing for it.

Store only — direct from TrunkMate. Alternative with an Amazon listing: the D-Hive SUV Air Mattress below does the sleep-flat job without a rigid platform.

Alternative: Platform-Free Air Bed

D-Hive SUV Air Mattress

The no-platform route: a 300D Oxford air bed, about 79 by 55 inches, that fills the cargo area directly and packs into its own bag. Best if your cargo floor is already close to flat and you want one box, not a platform plus a mattress.

Alternative: Bundle Mattress

Ciremiv SUV Air Mattress

The mattress the BlitzBed does not include: a 6-inch flocked air bed sold with its pump, pillows, window screens and carry bag. Best as the comfort layer on top of a platform, or alone in a vehicle whose floor is already level.

Alternative: Foam Comfort Layer

LOSTHORIZON Air and Foam Mattress

The foam step up: a self-inflating air-and-foam pad, 4.5 inches thick in the listing, for buyers who find plain air beds bouncy or cold. Best on top of a platform or flat floor where insulation matters as much as flatness.

Everything around the bed lives in the same section: camp kitchen accessories, power stations, portable lighting and window screens for the ventilation this review’s safety section insists on.

How to choose: judging the BlitzBed against the field

A single-product review still needs the buying criteria, because a platform only earns its place against them. These are the six checks we applied to the BlitzBed — the same checks behind our Jeep camping accessories and overlanding tool kit guides.

Length first: measure behind your front seats

The BlitzBed’s frame adjusts from 50 to 76 inches long, and TrunkMate’s FAQ puts the usable bed at 5 feet to 6 feet 3 inches. That range covers most sleepers, but the platform fitting is not the same as you fitting: the maker itself warns smaller-SUV buyers to confirm they fit behind the first row before ordering. Measure your own cargo length with the seats folded, then measure yourself.

Level and rigid, or soft and simple

A rigid platform does two jobs an air bed cannot: it bridges the step and slope of folded seats so the mattress lies truly flat, and it holds that flatness at the edges. An air mattress on an uneven floor follows the floor. If your vehicle’s seats fold genuinely flat, the platform’s main job disappears and the D-Hive route below is the honest buy; if they do not, the platform is the product.

Height is a trade: storage below, headroom above

The BlitzBed sits 7 to 10.75 inches tall depending on setup. Every inch of platform height is an inch of under-bed storage — TrunkMate’s bin guide fits a 22-inch-wide bin under the 24-inch single — and an inch taken from the headroom you sit up in. The low end of its range is the design’s point: it was built to clear folded seats while staying as low as possible.

Modular widths and the single-first strategy

Singles come as 16, 20 or 24-inch modules; the standard SUV double is 40 inches wide, built as two 20-inch modules or a 16 plus a 24, and an add-on module turns a single into a double later. A drawer is likewise optional and addable. That modularity is the BlitzBed’s real defence against cheaper one-size platforms: you can start solo, keep gear beside a single bed, and widen only when a second sleeper arrives.

Capacity: read the maker’s conflict before you trust a number

TrunkMate rates the single at 275 lb consistently. For a double, its spec tables print 400 lb while its own FAQ pages print 500 lb combined for two sleepers. This review prints both, unresolved, in the spec list and tables. Heavier pairs should confirm with TrunkMate before ordering — the maker also notes additional middle supports for heavier loads — and nobody should treat the higher figure as the rating.

Removable gear or permanent conversion

The BlitzBed folds to a 24-inch square, straps to the cargo anchors, and comes out completely, which keeps the vehicle a daily driver. A built-in plywood conversion sleeps just as flat but owns your cargo area full-time. Choose the platform if the vehicle still does school runs and hardware-store trips; choose a fixed build only if the vehicle is already a dedicated camper, like the setups in our truck bed cap overlanding guide.

What the BlitzBed honestly fits, by vehicle type

Fit claims below come from TrunkMate’s listings and FAQ and from named owner installs in the research notes — not from a generic compatibility promise. The maker’s own rule is the right one: if your vehicle is in its Fit Guide database, the fit has been checked; if it is not, ask before ordering.

Sleep setups by budget tier: where the BlitzBed sits

No prices appear in this review, by site rule: check the live listing on each button. The tier is a statement about what the setup does, not about this week’s discount — and the platform tier’s true cost always includes the mattress the BlitzBed leaves out, which is why the awning systems and truck bed tents alternatives deserve a look before you commit to sleeping inside the vehicle at all.

Detailed review: the BlitzBed Sleeping Platform in full

One product gets the full treatment below: the BlitzBed. The three alternatives are summarised after it, each with its own verified button, and all four meet again in the spec comparison tables.

Reviewed: BlitzBed Sleeping Platform — the removable rigid bed

Rigid Folding Platform — best for frequent SUV and minivan car campers

Why the BlitzBed is our pick

The BlitzBed exists to solve the one problem every SUV sleeper knows: folded seats are not flat. TrunkMate’s answer is a Baltic birch deck on a T6 aluminium frame that levels the cargo floor, extends the bed beyond the folded seats to as much as 76 inches, and then folds away into a 24-inch square that lives in the trunk. It is camping gear, not a conversion — it straps in, sleeps flat, and comes back out when the trip ends.

Its modularity is the second half of the case. Widths combine from 16, 20 and 24-inch modules, a single becomes a double with an add-on, and a drawer can be fitted later rather than guessed at on day one. Against that, two facts are printed plainly in this review: there is no Amazon listing — you order from a small California maker, handmade to order — and there is no mattress in the box. Bought with both eyes open, it is the most considered removable platform in its class.

BlitzBed Sleeping Platform key specs

  • Maker: TrunkMate, Costa Mesa, California; handmade in the USA, made to order
  • Best use: Car camping — universal-fit SUV conversion; minivan and truck versions offered
  • Unfolded dimensions (SUV): Single 50-76L x 24W x 7-10.75H in; Double 50-76L x 40W x 7-10.75H in
  • Folded dimensions: Single 24L x 24W x 8H in; Double 24L x 40W x 8H in
  • Weight: Single 32 lb on the reviewed 1-drawer listing; maker FAQ lists bare modules at 20-28 lb without a drawer

BlitzBed Sleeping Platform: fits and best for

It fits SUVs, minivans, hatchbacks and trucks whose owners sleep in them repeatedly: trailhead nights, festival weekends, long drives broken by naps, and the kind of trips collected in our Jeep camping guide. It fits best as a single for solo travellers who keep gear beside the bed, or as the 40-inch SUV double for couples. It is not sized for sedans, and the maker’s Fit Guide — not a tape-measure guess — is the authority for any specific vehicle.

BlitzBed Sleeping Platform pros and watch-outs

Pros

  • Levels a genuinely uneven cargo floor — the job air beds cannot do
  • Folds to a 24-inch square and removes completely; the vehicle stays a daily driver
  • Modular widths, add-on doubles and a later-fit drawer mean you buy it in stages
  • Low 7-inch minimum height protects headroom while still clearing folded seats
  • Handmade in the USA by a small maker whose owners praise personal support

Watch-outs

  • No Amazon listing and no mattress included — both add steps and cost beyond the platform
  • Maker capacity conflict on the double: 400 lb in the spec table, 500 lb combined in the FAQ
  • Made to order: the maker FAQ puts typical shipping at about two weeks, longer at volume
  • A platform cannot fix a vehicle that is simply too short for its sleeper — measure first

BlitzBed Sleeping Platform: what owners report

The long-term ownership picture comes from Trustindex’s TrunkMate owner reviews, where owners describe taking the platform camping for five days immediately after purchase, lifting it in and out alone, and storing it on a garage shelf. One 2012 Prius v owner reports a perfect fit and a level bed after a homemade plywood-and-rope setup left them sore — the exact before-and-after this product is sold on — and a Honda CR-V owner compares the sleep to their bed at home.

The second aggregator record is Birdeye’s TrunkMate reviews, where the recurring themes are careful shipping, quality above expectations, and named staff checking in after delivery. A Honda HR-V owner runs a single on the passenger side with the front seat pushed forward and recommends adding the drawer; a September 2025 buyer’s long review, written only after extended use, urges readers not to wait.

The honest limit: BlitzBed owner coverage runs largely through the maker’s own review channels and these two aggregators. Independent forum coverage is thin, and the maker’s own setup video is a demonstration, not an owner report — this review leans on the maker’s published specifications for every number and treats the owner record as colour, not proof.

BlitzBed Sleeping Platform: who should not buy

Do not buy the BlitzBed if you camp in the car twice a year, if your seats already fold flat, or if you need it this weekend — it is made to order and mattress-free. The D-Hive SUV Air Mattress covers occasional trips in one box, and the full context sits in our sleeping platforms archive. Do not buy it on the FAQ’s higher double capacity figure either: heavier pairs should confirm the rating with TrunkMate first.

BlitzBed Sleeping Platform: pair it with

Pair it with the thing it deliberately leaves out: a mattress. The Ciremiv SUV Air Mattress is the practical match — a 6-inch flocked bed whose bundle even includes the window screens the safety section below wants for ventilation — while the LOSTHORIZON foam pad is the cold-night upgrade. Either turns the platform from a flat deck into a bed, and the pairing habit generalises across the camp kitchen and power gear in the same archive.

Store only for the BlitzBed itself — direct from TrunkMate at the link in the verdict and sources. The button above is for the Ciremiv mattress named in this section. We may earn a commission on Amazon purchases at no cost to you.

Tip: order the single first if you mostly travel solo, and store nightly gear in the under-bed space the platform creates — TrunkMate’s bin guide sizes a 22-inch-wide bin under the 24-inch single. Keep the in-bed essentials in the short-term space under the bed boards, and put the rest of the system — lighting, screens, kitchen — on a packing list you reuse every trip.

The alternatives in brief

D-Hive SUV Air Mattress — the platform-free route

The D-Hive skips the platform entirely: a 300D Oxford air bed at about 79 by 55 inches and 7.87 inches thick on its listing, rated there at 600 lb, at 7 lb with an electric car-plug pump, headboard and carry bag in the box. It is the right answer when the cargo floor is already near flat and the trip is occasional. Its limits are the category’s limits: it follows an uneven floor instead of levelling it, and any air bed can leak.

Check Price

Ciremiv SUV Air Mattress — the bundle

The Ciremiv is the value bundle: about 77 by 51 inches, 6 inches thick, 10 lb, double-sided flocking, with pump, built-in pillow, two window screens, eye mask, ear plugs, repair patches and a carry bag on its listing, which states a 300 kg capacity. On the opened listing, one owner video summary calls it easy to inflate and move, soft but durable, while noting the air plugs can open too easily — the watch-out to know. It is the mattress we pair with the BlitzBed above.

Check Price

LOSTHORIZON Air and Foam Mattress — the comfort layer

The LOSTHORIZON splits the difference between air bed and home mattress: air-and-foam construction, 4.5 inches thick in its listing title with a maker R-value figure of 13, at about 79 by 54 inches and 14.33 lb in the Rivian R1S size we verified, with a 440 lb listing capacity. A 6th-generation 4Runner owner writing on the 6G4R forum reports a Lost Horizon truck-bed mattress fitting that cargo area closely and feeling plush, with the pump earning its place at deflation time. Choose it for cold nights and long trips.

Read the capacity row with the conflict in mind: TrunkMate’s spec table prints 400 lb for the BlitzBed double and its FAQ prints 500 lb combined. Both figures stay printed here, unresolved, and the alternatives’ capacities are their listings’ figures, not ours.

Setup and fitment basics

Per TrunkMate’s FAQ and product pages, the order is: confirm the vehicle in the maker’s Fit Guide, fold the seats, set the supports — SUV sets rest on the folded seats in three sizes, minivan and truck sets use levelling legs — extend the frame to length, level the deck with the adjustable supports, and strap the platform to the factory cargo anchors with the included ratchet straps before any bedding goes on. The maker’s video guides put the whole routine at 15 minutes or less, and the platform’s slight flex under load is by design, working, in the maker’s words, like a box spring.

Two habits matter more than speed. First, re-check the straps after the first drive: a platform that shifts at night was a platform that was already moving at noon. Second, decide the single-versus-double question with the vehicle loaded, not empty — the beside-bed space a single leaves for a fridge and storage drawers is, for many solo travellers, worth more than the empty half of a double. The same load-first thinking shapes our cargo basket and truck bed cover camping guides.

Safety essentials

Read before you sleep in any vehicle:

  • Never sleep with the engine running for heat or air conditioning in an enclosed or still-air space — carbon monoxide kills quietly; use ventilation and battery-powered climate gear instead.
  • Ventilate every night: crack windows behind screens so condensation and stale air escape — airflow is a safety feature, not a comfort extra.
  • Park level, brake set, on ground that will still be firm in the morning; a platform levelled on a slope is a bed that migrates.
  • Strap the platform to the cargo anchors before driving and before sleeping — an unsecured deck and its load move under braking.
  • Respect the rated capacity, and for the BlitzBed double use the lower published figure until the maker confirms otherwise in writing.
  • Keep an exit you can use half-asleep: keys reachable, one door unblocked by gear, and nothing heavy stored where it can fall into the bed.

Ciremiv SUV Air Mattress — its bundle includes the window screens that make the ventilation rule practical, which is why it is the safety section’s first pick as well as the BlitzBed’s pair-with.

LOSTHORIZON Air and Foam Mattress — insulation is safety in cold weather: a foam layer between you and a cold cargo floor is what keeps a flat platform from becoming a cold one.

Who should NOT buy the BlitzBed

Occasional car campers. Two or three nights a year does not repay a made-to-order platform plus a separate mattress. The D-Hive air bed in one box is the proportionate buy, and our sleeping platforms archive tracks the wider field as it grows.

Owners of genuinely flat-floor vehicles. If your seats fold into a floor a mattress can lie on directly, the platform’s core job is already done by your vehicle. Spend the money on the mattress layer and the camp kitchen instead.

Anyone who needs it this weekend, or only shops on Amazon. The BlitzBed is handmade to order — the maker’s FAQ puts typical shipping at about two weeks — and there is no Amazon listing at any price. A trip this weekend belongs to the alternatives above.

Heavier pairs shopping on the higher capacity figure. TrunkMate prints 400 lb for the double in its spec table and 500 lb combined in its FAQ. Until the maker confirms which governs, plan on the lower figure, ask about the additional middle supports the maker mentions, and treat any seller who quotes only the higher number with suspicion.

Buyers who want one box that is the whole bed. The BlitzBed is a platform, full stop: no mattress, by the maker’s deliberate choice, so owners can pick their own sleep surface. If a separate mattress purchase feels like a catch rather than a choice, buy a mattress-first setup instead.

FAQ

Is the BlitzBed worth buying?

For frequent car campers, yes: it does the one job nothing else in this review does — levelling an uneven cargo floor into a rigid, removable bed — and its modular widths, add-on double and later-fit drawer mean it grows with your trips. For occasional use it is hard to justify: it is made to order, it is sold direct only, and the mattress is a second purchase. Worth is frequency here, not quality.

Does the BlitzBed fit my vehicle?

Probably, with a check first. TrunkMate builds for SUVs, minivans, hatchbacks and trucks, verifies fits in a vehicle database drawn from physical checks, customer installs and repeated use, and sizes the deck to sit between the wheel-well arches with a small gap each side. The maker’s rule is the right one: if your vehicle is listed in its Fit Guide, the fit is confirmed; if it is not, ask the maker before ordering.

How much weight can the BlitzBed hold?

The single is rated at 275 lb everywhere TrunkMate publishes it. The double is where the maker disagrees with itself: its spec tables print 400 lb, while its FAQ pages print 500 lb combined for two sleepers. This review prints both and advises heavier pairs to plan on the lower figure and confirm with TrunkMate, which also mentions additional middle supports for heavier loads.

Does the BlitzBed come with a mattress?

No — deliberately. TrunkMate does not include mattresses with its platforms, so owners can choose their own sleep surface, and the platform widths mirror common mattress sizes for exactly that reason. Budget for a mattress as part of this purchase: the Ciremiv air bed in this review is the practical match, and the LOSTHORIZON foam pad is the insulated upgrade.

Will the BlitzBed work if my seats do not fold flat?

Yes — that is the problem it was designed around. Adjustable supports fine-tune the deck height so it clears the step and slope of folded seats: SUV sets include supports that rest on the folded seats in three sizes, while minivan and truck sets use levelling legs that reach the footwell. If your seats folded flat, you would need this product less, not more.

How long does the BlitzBed take to set up and pack away?

The maker’s video guides put setup at 15 minutes or less, and its demonstration video shows the deck folding out in about a minute once installed. Packing is the reverse of setup: the platform folds into a 24-inch square — 24 by 24 by 8 inches as a single — that stores in the trunk, which is what keeps the vehicle usable as a daily driver between trips.

Can I buy the BlitzBed on Amazon?

No. We checked the maker’s store and Amazon directly for this review: the BlitzBed is sold only through TrunkMate’s own store, handmade to order in California, and no Amazon listing for it exists. Any marketplace listing using the BlitzBed name should be treated as a different product until the maker says otherwise. The three alternatives in this review are the Amazon-available routes.

BlitzBed single or double: which should I order?

Order the single if you mostly travel solo. It leaves beside-bed space for a fridge and storage, it is the lightest configuration, and TrunkMate sells an add-on module that turns a single into a double later — the 40-inch SUV double is two modules combined. Order the double from the start only if a second sleeper is a regular fact, not an occasional possibility.

How is the BlitzBed different from a DIY plywood platform?

Three things: weight, removal and adjustment. The aluminium-framed BlitzBed folds to a trunk-sized square and straps in and out without tools or carpentry, its length and height adjust to the vehicle, and its capacity is a published maker figure. A plywood build costs less and fits one vehicle exactly, but it is heavier, permanent while fitted, and its strength is whatever your joinery made it. Owners in this review’s sources made exactly that switch.
