The 30-second answer
Most automotive test lights are not waterproof, and the honest answer to this comparison is that waterproof is a rating, not a marketing word. A regular test light shows whether a circuit has power, a sealed or splash-resistant light keeps working in rain and wet engine bays, and a truly waterproof light carries an IP rating that states immersion depth and time. Buy the rating your job needs: a dry garage fuse check needs a regular light, a wet trailer or boat trailer job needs a sealed light, and no test light in this guide should be submerged unless its maker rating says so.
Our picks are: Power Probe III Circuit Tester PP3CS, Klein Tools ET45VP Electrical Test Kit, AWBLIN Automotive Test Light 3-48V Digital LCD, TopDiag P60 Power Circuit Probe Kit, Power Probe III EZ Circuit Tester.
How we researched this guide
We compared 5 products for this guide, checked 9 maker and listing records for specifications, and reviewed guide summaries and discussion threads linked in Sources. No product in this guide was trialled by this site, and every figure below is a maker or listing rating, or a paraphrased summary with a link.
Where the evidence checked gave no figure, the guide says Not published rather than guessing.
Search results for waterproof test lights mix three different things: lights with a real ingress rating, lights that are merely splash-resistant, and regular lights sold with the word waterproof in the title. This guide separates those three before recommending anything, and it prints the rating each pick actually carries, including where the maker and a secondary source disagree. If a pick has no published IP rating, this guide says so, rather than repeating a marketing claim as a specification.

Test light finder: what voltage will you test?
Enter the highest system voltage you will test, in volts. The finder routes to a tester whose published range covers that voltage, and every result names a tester from this guide with its button. Never use an automotive tester on mains circuits, whatever the number entered.
How to choose test lights
IP rating, not the word waterproof
An IP rating has two digits: dust protection first, water protection second. IP41 means protected against solid objects and dripping water, while a higher second digit means stronger water protection. A light with no published IP rating is not waterproof by default, however its title reads.
Voltage range for your vehicle
A 12 volt car, a 24 volt truck and a 48 volt system need different ranges. A light rated 6 to 30 volts covers cars and many trucks, a light rated 3 to 48 volts covers more systems, and a mains-rated tester covers household circuits that an automotive light must never touch.
What the light actually tells you
A simple light tells you power is present, a digital display tells you the voltage, and a circuit tester can also supply power or ground to activate a component. More information is better for diagnosis, but a component-activating tester can damage a sensitive circuit if used on the wrong wire.
Probe, lead and clip quality
A sharp stainless probe pierces insulation cleanly, a long lead reaches around a vehicle, and a solid ground clip gives a true reading. Short leads and weak clips cause false dead readings, which send a diagnosis in the wrong direction.
Safety rating and CAT class
Mains and high-energy circuits need a CAT-rated tester, while automotive 12 and 24 volt work needs a tester rated for vehicle systems. Never use an automotive test light on mains circuits, and never probe airbag circuits with a powered tester.
Wet working conditions
Rain, wet engine bays, boat trailers and pressure washing all expose a tester to water. A splash-resistant tester survives spray, a sealed tester survives rain, and only an immersion-rated tester survives submersion, so match the rating to the wettest job you actually do.

Detailed reviews
Each tester below is judged on its own published range and rating, with unrated water resistance stated as unrated rather than claimed.
Best professional circuit tester: Power Probe III Circuit Tester PP3CS
Best professional circuit tester
Why the Power Probe III Circuit Tester PP3CS is our pick
The Power Probe III is the professional pick because it does more than light up: it is a voltmeter and continuity tester with audible and visual indicators, two LED headlights for the work area, and the ability to supply battery voltage or ground to a component under test. Its listing gives a 12 to 24 volt system rating, a 20 ft cable that reaches anywhere around a vehicle, and a digital voltmeter range, which together cover serious vehicle diagnosis.
The honest limit is water: the evidence checked publishes no IP rating for this tester, so it is a regular tester for dry and damp workshop use, not a waterproof tester for submersion or pressure washing. A buyer who needs wet work should pair it with a sealed tester, not pretend this one is sealed.

Power Probe III Circuit Tester PP3CS: what owners report
Guide summaries for professional circuit testers place the Power Probe III as the shop standard for vehicle electrical diagnosis, and discussion threads value its long lead and component activation most. Owners reporting wet use note that it is a workshop tool, which matches this guide's unrated-water stance rather than a waterproof claim. (Professional Motor Mechanic)
Power Probe III Circuit Tester PP3CS: who should not buy
Do not buy this as your first tester, or for wet submersion work. Buy a simple or digital light first, and a sealed tester for wet jobs.
Power Probe III Circuit Tester PP3CS: pair it with
Pair it with a vehicle wiring diagram for your exact model, since component activation without identification risks a module.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: test the probe on a known live circuit before every diagnosis, so a dead reading is trusted.
Best sealed tester kit: Klein Tools ET45VP Electrical Test Kit
Best sealed tester kit
Why the Klein Tools ET45VP Electrical Test Kit is our pick
This kit earns the sealed place because its maker documentation is specific: the ET45 tests AC voltages from 24 to 240 volts at four levels and DC voltages from 32 to 330 volts at four levels, needs no batteries because it is powered by the applied voltage, and is built to survive a 9.8 ft drop. Its maker page describes IP41 dust and water resistance, which means dripping water protection, not immersion.
A secondary source describes the ET45 as IP44, which conflicts with the maker's IP41, and this guide uses the maker's figure, since the maker rating is the checkable one. Either figure means splash and drip protection, not submersion, so the buying advice is the same: fine in rain and wet bays, not for dropping in water.
Klein Tools ET45VP Electrical Test Kit key specs
- Kit: ET45VP, ET45 plus GFCI outlet tester

Klein Tools ET45VP Electrical Test Kit: what owners report
Maker documentation and secondary reviews agree on this tester's simplicity: bright LEDs, no batteries, and a pocketable size that survives drops. Reviews that call it waterproof overstate the rating, which is why this guide prints IP41 and the splash-only limit alongside the recommendation. (Klein Tools)
Klein Tools ET45VP Electrical Test Kit: who should not buy
Do not buy this for precise voltage measurement or for component activation. Buy a digital tester or a Power Probe for those jobs.
Klein Tools ET45VP Electrical Test Kit: pair it with
Pair it with a non-contact tester for checking a circuit is dead before touching it.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: keep the leads in the built-in holder, since loose leads are how a pocket tester gets damaged.
Best digital test light: AWBLIN Automotive Test Light 3-48V Digital LCD
Best digital test light
Why the AWBLIN Automotive Test Light 3-48V Digital LCD is our pick
A digital display changes diagnosis: instead of a light that merely says power is present, this tester shows the voltage, which separates a weak circuit from a healthy one and a charging fault from a dead battery. Its listing gives a 3 to 48 volt DC range, a current draw of 17 mA at lower voltages and 10 mA at higher voltages, and a sharp stainless probe for piercing insulation.
The range is the widest automotive range in this guide, covering cars, trucks and many low-voltage systems, which is why it is the default for an unknown system voltage. The limit is water: no IP rating is published in the evidence checked, so it is a regular tester for dry work, not a waterproof tester.
AWBLIN Automotive Test Light 3-48V Digital LCD key specs
- Voltage range: DC 3 to 48 V
- Display: Digital LCD
- Probe: Sharp stainless steel
- Current draw: 17 mA at 3 to 20 V, 10 mA at 20 to 48 V
- Standard: UL, CE, IEC 61010-1 per listing

AWBLIN Automotive Test Light 3-48V Digital LCD: what owners report
Listing summaries for digital test lights value the LCD most: owners moving from a bulb light report that a number ends arguments about whether a circuit is weak or dead. Guide summaries repeat the same caution this guide gives, that a digital light is still a regular tester unless its maker publishes a water rating. (The Garage Journal)
AWBLIN Automotive Test Light 3-48V Digital LCD: who should not buy
Do not buy this for mains work, or for work where submersion is possible. Buy a CAT-rated mains tester, or a sealed tester, for those jobs.
AWBLIN Automotive Test Light 3-48V Digital LCD: pair it with
Pair it with a wiring diagram, so a voltage number is read against the expected value for that circuit.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: write the expected voltage on the diagram before testing, so a low reading is recognised at once.
Best for low voltage checks: TopDiag P60 Power Circuit Probe Kit
Best for low voltage checks
Why the TopDiag P60 Power Circuit Probe Kit is our pick
The P60 suits the most common vehicle job, a 12 volt car check, with a 6 to 30 volt range that also covers 24 volt trucks and many small systems. Its listing describes a ground test and jump lead function, which checks whether a bad ground or a power supply failure is the fault, plus LED lights on top to illuminate dark work areas.
That ground-test function is genuinely useful, because bad grounds cause more mysterious vehicle electrical faults than dead components. The limit, again, is water: no IP rating is published in the evidence checked, so this is a regular tester, and its compact size is a workshop advantage rather than a wet-work credential.
TopDiag P60 Power Circuit Probe Kit key specs

No owner summary in the evidence checked claims a water rating for it, which matches this guide's unrated stance. (AP Tuning)
TopDiag P60 Power Circuit Probe Kit: who should not buy
Do not buy this if you need a precise voltmeter, a component activator, or a waterproof tester. Buy the digital light, the Power Probe, or a sealed tester respectively.
TopDiag P60 Power Circuit Probe Kit: pair it with
Pair it with a fuse puller and spare fuses, since fuse testing is its most common job.
We may earn a commission at no cost to you.
Tip: test ground first on every dead circuit, since a bad ground mimics a dead component.
Best learning circuit tester: Power Probe III EZ Circuit Tester
Best learning circuit tester
Why the Power Probe III EZ Circuit Tester is our pick
The EZ variant of the Power Probe III adds a learning and diagnostics mode to the standard Power Probe circuit tester, which helps a user who is new to component testing work through a test step by step rather than guessing. Its listing gives a 12 to 24 volt system rating, a digital style, and the same voltmeter and continuity testing family as the standard PP3.
For a beginner stepping up from a simple light, guided testing is a real advantage, because the most dangerous Power Probe mistake is supplying power to an unidentified wire. The EZ mode does not remove that risk, but it structures the test, which is why it sits here as a learning pick rather than a second professional pick.
Power Probe III EZ Circuit Tester key specs
- Model: PP3EZGRNAS
- System rating: 12 to 24 V
- Style: Digital
- Function: Circuit testing with learning and diagnostics mode
- Measurement: Voltmeter per listing

Installation and use basics
Connect the tester's ground clip to a clean, unpainted ground point first, then touch the probe to the circuit under test, keeping your hands clear of moving parts and hot surfaces. Read the light or display, then move to the next point in the circuit, working from the power source toward the load, so a dead reading localises the break. For a powered circuit tester, follow the maker manual exactly before supplying power or ground to a component, and never supply power to a circuit you have not identified. After testing, disconnect the ground clip, coil the lead without kinking it, and store the tester dry. Vehicle electrical guides on this site, including the winch wiring and battery guides, cover the same sequence of ground first, test in order, and never force a result. Safety essentials
Never use an automotive test light on mains circuits. Never probe airbag circuits with a powered tester. Never pierce a wire and leave the insulation damaged without sealing it. Never test with wet hands on a high-energy circuit. Never supply power to an unidentified circuit with a circuit tester. Never trust a single dead reading: check your ground clip on a known live circuit first.
Three buttoned picks that belong in a vehicle electrical kit are the top circuit tester in this guide, the digital LCD tester for quick voltage numbers, and the sealed tester kit for wet and household-adjacent work. The top pick is the Power Probe III Circuit Tester PP3CS, and the other two are the AWBLIN digital tester and the Klein ET45VP kit, each with its own button in its card and block.
Troubleshooting
| Symptom | Likely cause | Fix |
|---|---|---|
| Light never lights on a live circuit | Bad ground clip connection, or a broken lead | Refit the clip to clean metal and test on a known live circuit |
| Light lights on every wire | Tester grounded to a live point, or a shorted circuit | Recheck the ground point and test the circuit with a meter |
| Display jumps around | Loose probe contact, or a corroded connector | Clean the contact point and hold the probe steady |
| Tester works dry but not wet | Water in the tester body, or an unrated tester in rain | Dry the tester fully and switch to a sealed tester for wet work |
| Component will not activate | Wrong wire, blown fuse, or a tester limit reached | Identify the circuit from a diagram before supplying power |
| Probe pierces but the reading is dead | Wire insulation sealing, or a break further up the circuit | Work back toward the power source point by point |
Who should NOT buy these
Do not buy a regular unrated test light for boat trailer or pressure-wash work. Water will get into an unsealed tester, and a dead tester in wet conditions is worse than no tester, because it gives false dead readings. Buy a sealed or rated tester for wet jobs.
Do not buy a powered circuit tester as your first tester. Supplying power to the wrong wire can damage a module, so learn diagnosis with a simple or digital light first, and add a powered tester when you can identify circuits from a diagram.
Do not buy a mains tester for a car, or a car tester for mains. The voltage ranges and safety ratings are different, and using either on the wrong system risks the tester and the user.

FAQ
What does waterproof mean for a test light?
Waterproof should mean a published IP rating that states how much water the tester withstands, and for how long. A tester with no published IP rating is not waterproof by default, however its title reads, and a splash-resistant tester is not submersible.
Is a waterproof test light better than a regular test light?
It is better only if you work wet. For dry garage fuse checks, a regular light is simpler and cheaper, and its reading is just as valid. For rain, wet engine bays and boat trailers, a sealed or rated tester keeps working where a regular tester fails or gives false dead readings.
What IP rating do I need for wet vehicle work?
IP41 covers dripping water, which suits light rain and splashes, while higher second digits cover spray and jets. Only an immersion rating covers dropping the tester in water, so check the second digit against the wettest job you actually do, not against the word waterproof.
Can I use an automotive test light on household mains?
No. Automotive testers are rated for vehicle systems, usually 12 to 48 volts, while mains circuits are far higher energy. Use a CAT-rated mains tester for household circuits, and never cross the two jobs.
Can a test light damage my car's electronics?
A simple or digital light draws very little current and is generally safe on vehicle circuits, but a powered circuit tester that supplies voltage or ground can damage a module if used on the wrong wire. Identify the circuit from a diagram before supplying power.
Why does my test light show dead on a live circuit?
The most common cause is a bad ground clip connection, followed by a broken lead or a corroded probe point. Refit the clip to clean metal, test on a known live circuit, and work back toward the power source point by point.
Do I need a digital test light or is a bulb enough?
A bulb tells you power is present, while a digital display tells you the voltage, which separates a weak circuit from a healthy one. For fuse checks a bulb is enough, while for charging and sensor diagnosis a number is much more useful.
Can I probe airbag circuits with a test light?
No, not with a powered tester, and not without the maker procedure for that vehicle. Airbag circuits are sensitive and safety-critical, so leave them to the vehicle manual and a qualified technician.
How do I test a ground with a test light?
Connect the probe to a known live point and the clip to the ground under test, or use a probe with a ground test function as the P60 provides. A good ground lights the tester brightly, while a bad ground gives a dim or dead result that explains many mysterious faults.
