Best LED Halogen Bulbs (2026): 6 Medium-Base Picks

Disclosure: As an Amazon Associate, I earn from qualifying purchases. This comes at no extra cost to you.

How we researched this guide

We shortlisted 14 medium-base (E26) LED listings, checked maker and specification pages from Philips USA, GE Lighting and 1000Bulbs, and carried forward only the 6 bulbs whose Amazon listing title, base, shape and headline specs could be tied to an exact ASIN in a search result. Listings without that exact match were dropped, not guessed. Owner-report themes were paraphrased at article level from each product listing page, with no individual review quoted and no rating figure printed.

Every headline figure in this guide is a maker or listing figure, labelled as such: lumens, colour temperature, beam angle and rated life come from the listing or maker page named for that pick. Where a listing contradicted itself — the GE 3-way wattage fields are the example — we say so and print no single number. Nothing here is a test result.

The 30-second answer

For most standard lamps, buy the Philips A19 Daylight: 800 lumens of 5000 K daylight on a true E26 medium base. For recessed cans, buy the SYLVANIA BR30 Daylight; for driveways and security spots, the Philips PAR38 Spot; for a 3-way lamp, the GE Basic 3-Way A21; for the brightest garage or workshop coverage, the LEDERA A21 Daylight; and for stocking several rooms at once, the TCP A19 Soft White 6-pack. First check the base marking on your old bulb: if it does not say E26, none of these will fit, whatever the shape looks like.

Bulb finder: which pick matches your fixture?

Answer three questions and we will point you to the pick from this guide that fits your fixture, shape and priority. Every result recommends a bulb from this article, with its own button.

How to choose LED halogen bulbs with a medium base

Check the base first, not the shape

Medium base means E26: an Edison screw 26 mm across, the standard North American screw base. Read the marking on your old bulb or its packaging before anything else. A beautiful BR30 or PAR38 with the wrong base will not screw in at all, and an E12 candelabra bulb will rattle loose in an E26 socket. Base fit is the gate.

Match the shape to the fixture

A19 and A21 are general-purpose bulbs for lamps and open fixtures. BR30 is a bulged reflector made for recessed cans, where its wide face sits flush. PAR38 is a parabolic reflector for outdoor floods and security spots, where a defined beam matters. An A19 in a deep can wastes light; a PAR38 in a table lamp glares.

Compare lumens, not watts

Watts measure power drawn, not light produced. An 8-watt LED can outshine a 65-watt halogen because the technologies differ. The honest comparison across this guide is lumens: 650 for a single can, 800 for a standard lamp, 1300 for a spot, 2500 for a workshop. If a listing hides lumens behind an equivalence claim alone, treat the claim with suspicion.

Pick colour temperature for the room

2700 K soft white suits living rooms, bedrooms and dining areas, where warm light relaxes. 5000 K daylight suits garages, workshops, kitchens and security lighting, where detail and alertness matter. Decide per room and keep that room consistent.

Check dimming and enclosed-fixture limits

A bulb marked non-dimmable will flicker, buzz or simply not dim on a dimmer circuit, however good it looks on a plain switch. Conversely, a dimmable bulb still needs a compatible dimmer, and some listings warn against fully enclosed fixtures where heat builds up. Read both warnings for your exact pick before ordering.

Weigh rated life and warranty honestly

Rated life here runs from 10,950 hours to 50,000 hours, but each figure rests on the maker’s own test basis, usually a few hours of use per day, so figures are not directly comparable across brands. Treat a long rated life as a sign of maker confidence, not a promise, and note the warranty where one is published: 3 years on the Philips A19 and the SYLVANIA BR30 in this guide.

LED halogen bulbs medium base by budget

Tier What you get Example pick
Stock-up Several rooms covered from one pack, warm light, standard brightness TCP A19 Soft White 6-pack
Everyday One reliable bulb per fixture, daylight or warm, honest lumen figures Philips A19 Daylight
Specialist Shape-led picks for cans, spots or 3-way sockets, with dimming where listed SYLVANIA BR30, Philips PAR38, GE 3-Way
High-output Workshop-grade brightness from a single E26 socket, daylight colour LEDERA A21 Daylight

No tier here is a price claim: tiers describe what the bulb does and how many fixtures it covers, because this guide prints no prices anywhere. A stock-up pack costs more in one purchase but covers six sockets; a specialist bulb costs more per bulb because its reflector and beam are shaped for one job.

Types of medium-base LED bulbs in this guide

Type Pros Cons Best for
A19 / A21 general Fits most lamps; widest colour choice Wastes light in deep cans; no beam control Table lamps, floor lamps, open fixtures
BR30 reflector Sits flush in cans; soft wide flood Too wide for small fixtures; modest lumens Recessed cans, kitchens, hallways
PAR38 spot / flood Defined beam; strong outdoor throw Narrow beam leaves dark edges; larger head Driveways, porches, security lighting
3-way A21 Three light levels from one socket Only works in a true 3-way socket Reading lamps, living-room 3-way fixtures

Detailed reviews: medium-base LED bulbs

Each review below follows the same order: why it is the pick, its listed specs, where it fits, honest pros and watch-outs, what owners report, who should not buy it, and what to pair it with. Specs are listing or maker figures; where a figure is unpublished or inconsistent, the review says so instead of filling the gap.

Best overall: Philips A19 Daylight, 60-Watt Equivalent

Best overall

Why the Philips A19 Daylight, 60-Watt Equivalent is our pick

The Philips A19 Daylight earns the top spot because it does the ordinary job with unusual honesty: 800 lumens, 5000 K daylight, a true E26 base and a published model number, 455600, with a 3-year warranty description on its listing. It replaces a 60-watt bulb in a standard lamp, with no new shape, socket or dimmer to learn. For task lighting and larger rooms, this is the bulb to buy first. Its limits are plain: non-dimmable, and 800 lumens will not carry a workshop alone.

Philips A19 Daylight, 60-Watt Equivalent key specs

  • Base: E26 medium screw base
  • Shape: A19 general-purpose
  • Listed watts: 9 W
  • Brightness: 800 lumens
  • Colour temperature: 5000 K daylight
  • Equivalent: 60-watt incandescent
  • Dimmable: No
  • Model number: 455600
  • Manufacturer: Philips Lighting
  • Rated life: up to 10,950 hours (listing basis)
  • Warranty: 3-year description on listing
  • Pack: 4-pack listing

Philips A19 Daylight, 60-Watt Equivalent: fits and best for

Standard table lamps, floor lamps and open ceiling fixtures with an E26 socket on a plain switch. Best for reading areas, home offices and kitchens where daylight colour helps detail stand out, and for any room where the old bulb was a 60-watt general bulb. Not for dimmer circuits, recessed cans or outdoor spots — the BR30 and PAR38 below cover those.

Philips A19 Daylight, 60-Watt Equivalent pros and watch-outs

  • True E26 base fits the commonest North American socket
  • 800 lumens is a genuine step up for task lighting
  • Daylight 5000 K keeps print and detail readable
  • Published model number and 3-year warranty description
  • Frosted, shatter-free plastic construction per listing
  • Non-dimmable: flicker or no dimming on dimmer circuits
  • 800 lumens will not light a large workshop alone
  • Daylight colour can feel cold in bedrooms
  • Not for use with Philips HUE products per listing

Philips A19 Daylight, 60-Watt Equivalent: what owners report

Owner themes on the product listing page centre on instant-on daylight brightness for task areas, with several owners noting the bulb brightens a work corner noticeably over the warm bulb it replaced. The recurring watch-out matches the spec: on dimmer circuits it does not dim. No individual review is quoted and no rating figure is printed.

Philips A19 Daylight, 60-Watt Equivalent: who should not buy

If your lamp is on a dimmer, do not buy this bulb: you will get flicker or a bulb that ignores the dimmer entirely. Buy a dimmable pick instead — the SYLVANIA BR30 below dims, or see the energy-efficiency bulb guide for dimmable alternatives in other bases.

Philips A19 Daylight, 60-Watt Equivalent: pair it with

Pair it with a plain on/off lamp and a light shade. For a full-room plan, see our portable work lights guide for task lighting that moves with the job.

Best recessed: SYLVANIA BR30 Daylight, 65-Watt Equivalent

Best recessed

Why the SYLVANIA BR30 Daylight, 65-Watt Equivalent is our pick

The SYLVANIA BR30 Daylight is the recessed-can pick because its shape does the work a general bulb cannot: a bulged reflector face that sits flush in a can and spreads 650 lumens of daylight in a wide 120-degree flood. At 8 watts it replaces a 65-watt bulb in ceiling cans, and it dims for evening use. The listing names LEDVANCE as manufacturer and SYLVANIA as the brand. Its limits are modest output per bulb and dimmer compatibility varying by switch.

SYLVANIA BR30 Daylight, 65-Watt Equivalent key specs

  • Base: E26 medium screw base
  • Shape: BR30 bulged reflector
  • Listed watts: 8 W
  • Brightness: 650 lumens
  • Colour temperature: 5000 K daylight
  • Equivalent: 65-watt bulb
  • CRI: 80
  • Beam angle: 120 degrees
  • Dimmable: Yes
  • Model number: 73956
  • Manufacturer: LEDVANCE (SYLVANIA brand)
  • Rated life: 11,000 hours (listing field); warranty: 3-year description

SYLVANIA BR30 Daylight, 65-Watt Equivalent: fits and best for

Recessed cans in kitchens, hallways and bathrooms, and covered outdoor fixtures where a wide flood suits a porch ceiling. Best for rooms already wired with cans, where the old bulb was a 65-watt reflector and the fixture depth suits a BR30 face. Not for table lamps or narrow outdoor spots. Check can depth: a BR30 face is wider than an A19.

SYLVANIA BR30 Daylight, 65-Watt Equivalent pros and watch-outs

  • Reflector shape sits flush in recessed cans
  • Wide 120-degree flood suits kitchens and hallways
  • Dimmable for evening use in the same fixture
  • Indoor and outdoor use per listing
  • Published model number and 3-year warranty description
  • 650 lumens per bulb: large rooms need several cans
  • Dimmer compatibility varies by switch model
  • Daylight colour can feel stark in bedrooms
  • Wider face than an A19: check can depth first

SYLVANIA BR30 Daylight, 65-Watt Equivalent: what owners report

Owner themes on the product listing page centre on clean can fit and daylight colour over counters, with owners noting the bulb sits neatly where a general bulb left a gap or glare. The recurring watch-out is dimmer behaviour on older dimmers: dimmable does not mean universally compatible. No individual review is quoted and no rating figure is printed.

SYLVANIA BR30 Daylight, 65-Watt Equivalent: who should not buy

If your fixture is a standard lamp rather than a can, do not buy this bulb: the reflector shape is wasted and looks oversized. Buy the Philips A19 above for lamps, and see the bed lighting guide for small-space lighting ideas.

SYLVANIA BR30 Daylight, 65-Watt Equivalent: pair it with

Pair it with a compatible LED dimmer, checked before fitting. For outdoor runs, see our waterproof trail lights guide for weather-rated lighting beyond the porch.

Tip: replace a whole can run together so colour matches; see our trail lights guide for consistent-colour planning outdoors.

Best outdoor / security: Philips PAR38 Spot, 100-Watt Equivalent

Best outdoor / security

Why the Philips PAR38 Spot, 100-Watt Equivalent is our pick

The Philips PAR38 Spot is the outdoor pick because it is the only bulb in this guide with a beam: 1300 lumens through a 25-degree spot, made to throw light down a driveway or across a porch rather than scatter it. That narrow beam suits security lighting: it lights the path and door instead of the lawn. It dims per its listing and is rated to 50,000 hours on the listing’s basis. Outside the spot, edges go dark, so one bulb will not light a whole yard.

Philips PAR38 Spot, 100-Watt Equivalent key specs

  • Base: E26 medium screw base
  • Shape: PAR38 parabolic reflector
  • Listed watts: 13 W
  • Brightness: 1300 lumens
  • Colour temperature: 5000 K daylight
  • Equivalent: 100-watt incandescent
  • Beam angle: 25 degrees (spot)
  • Dimmable: Yes, flicker-free per listing
  • Rated life: up to 50,000 hours (listing basis)
  • Mercury-free per listing
  • Not for use with Philips HUE products
  • Pack: 1-pack listing

Philips PAR38 Spot, 100-Watt Equivalent: fits and best for

Outdoor flood and security fixtures, porch ceilings, driveway lights and garage exteriors with an E26 socket. Best for lighting a defined area — a door, a path, a parking pad — where throw and a clear edge matter. Not for general room lighting or small indoor fixtures. Check fixture size and weather rating: the bulb is not the housing.

Philips PAR38 Spot, 100-Watt Equivalent pros and watch-outs

  • 1300 lumens with a defined 25-degree spot beam
  • Strong throw for driveways and security areas
  • Dimmable with flicker-free dimming per listing
  • Long rated life for hard-to-reach fixtures
  • Mercury-free construction per listing
  • Narrow beam leaves dark edges outside the spot
  • Large PAR38 head will not fit small fixtures
  • Daylight colour feels harsh for warm porch evenings
  • One bulb will not light a whole yard

Philips PAR38 Spot, 100-Watt Equivalent: what owners report

Owner themes on the product listing page centre on strong narrow-beam throw for driveways and security spots, with owners noting the spot reaches further than the wide flood it replaced. The recurring watch-out matches the beam: owners expecting whole-yard coverage report dark edges. No individual review is quoted and no rating figure is printed.

Philips PAR38 Spot, 100-Watt Equivalent: who should not buy

If you want one bulb to wash a whole yard or a whole room, do not buy this spot: its beam is deliberately narrow. Buy the SYLVANIA BR30 for wide floods, or see our off-road light bars guide for wide-area vehicle lighting.

Philips PAR38 Spot, 100-Watt Equivalent: pair it with

Pair it with a weather-rated fixture and a motion sensor. For vehicle-mounted area lighting, see our LED light bars guide.

Tip: aim before tightening — a spot aimed at the lawn wastes the bulb; see our work lights under 30 guide for aiming task light the same way.

Best 3-way lamp: GE Basic 3-Way A21, 150/100/50-Watt

Best 3-way lamp

Why the GE Basic 3-Way A21, 150/100/50-Watt is our pick

The GE Basic 3-Way A21 is the only bulb in this guide that gives three light levels from one socket, and that single fact makes it the pick for the reading lamp by the chair. It answers each click with a real step in brightness, up to a listed 2610 lumens at high in soft 2700 K white with a listed CRI of 90, the highest in this guide. That matters for reading, where colour should look natural. The honest gap is wattage: the listing’s fields disagree, so this review prints no single wattage. In a one-level socket it gives one level only.

GE Basic 3-Way A21, 150/100/50-Watt key specs

  • Base: E26 medium screw base
  • Shape: A21 general-purpose, larger than A19
  • Brightness: 2610 lumens (high setting)
  • Colour temperature: 2700 K soft white
  • CRI: 90
  • Settings: 150 / 100 / 50-watt replacement levels
  • Dimmable: via 3-way socket steps, not a dimmer
  • Model number: 93130567
  • Manufacturer: GE Lighting
  • Voltage: 120 V
  • Use: indoor
  • Wattage: not stated consistently in listing — see watch-outs

GE Basic 3-Way A21, 150/100/50-Watt: fits and best for

True 3-way table and floor lamps in living rooms, bedrooms and reading corners with an E26 socket. Best for the lamp that serves both background light and reading light, where the low setting suits evening and the high setting suits detail work. Not for dimmer circuits or one-level sockets. Check the socket first: it needs extra clicks.

GE Basic 3-Way A21, 150/100/50-Watt pros and watch-outs

  • Three real light levels from one socket
  • Highest CRI in this guide at 90
  • 2610 lumens at high setting for reading
  • Warm 2700 K suits living rooms and bedrooms
  • Instant-on per listing feature
  • Wattage fields inconsistent in listing: no single figure printed
  • Only gives three levels in a true 3-way socket
  • Not a dimmer bulb: will not dim on a dimmer circuit
  • Larger A21 head: check shade and harp clearance

GE Basic 3-Way A21, 150/100/50-Watt: what owners report

Owner themes on the product listing page centre on the three levels working as expected in standard 3-way sockets, with owners noting the low setting suits evening use and the high setting suits reading. The recurring watch-out matches the socket rule: one-level sockets give one brightness. No individual review is quoted and no rating figure is printed.

GE Basic 3-Way A21, 150/100/50-Watt: who should not buy

If your lamp has a dimmer rather than a 3-way switch, do not buy this bulb: it will not dim. Buy a dimmable BR30 or PAR38 above for dimmer circuits, or see the energy-efficiency bulb guide for other dimmable options.

GE Basic 3-Way A21, 150/100/50-Watt: pair it with

Pair it with a 3-way lamp whose shade clears the larger A21 head, and keep the old 3-way bulb until you have confirmed all three levels click through. For movable task light beside the same chair, see our portable work lights guide.

Tip: test all three clicks on day one — one level usually means the socket; see our work lights guide for the same test-first habit on workshop lighting.

Brightest garage / workshop: LEDERA A21 Daylight, 150-Watt Equivalent

Brightest garage / workshop

Why the LEDERA A21 Daylight, 150-Watt Equivalent is our pick

The LEDERA A21 Daylight is the brightest bulb in this guide by a clear margin: a listed 2500 lumens of 5000 K daylight from a 23-watt E26 bulb, aimed squarely at garages, workshops and large rooms where a single 60-watt-equivalent bulb leaves shadows over the bench. Its 270-degree beam covers a bay rather than a corner, and its listing claims 25,000 hours. The equivalence claim is a range, not a measurement, so this review compares on lumens. Daylight colour and non-dimmable operation are its limits.

LEDERA A21 Daylight, 150-Watt Equivalent key specs

  • Base: E26 medium screw base
  • Shape: A21 general-purpose, larger than A19
  • Listed watts: 23 W
  • Brightness: 2500 lumens
  • Colour temperature: 5000 K daylight
  • Beam angle: 270 degrees
  • CRI: over 80
  • Equivalent: marketed as 150- to 200-watt (listing range)
  • Dimmable: No
  • Rated life: 25,000 hours (listing claim)
  • Use: garage, workshop, office, living areas per listing
  • Pack: varies by listing option

LEDERA A21 Daylight, 150-Watt Equivalent: fits and best for

Garages, workshops, basements and large rooms with an E26 socket on a plain switch and a fixture that clears the larger A21 head. Best for benches, tool walls and parking bays where shadow-free daylight matters more than warm atmosphere. Not for bedrooms or dimmer circuits. Check shade size: a high-output bulb in a small enclosed shade traps heat.

LEDERA A21 Daylight, 150-Watt Equivalent pros and watch-outs

  • Highest lumen figure in this guide at 2500
  • Wide 270-degree beam covers a bay, not a corner
  • Daylight colour suits detail and workshop work
  • Low 23-watt draw for its output class
  • CRI over 80 keeps colours readable
  • Non-dimmable: no dimming on dimmer circuits
  • Daylight colour feels harsh in bedrooms
  • Equivalence is a marketing range, not a measurement
  • Larger A21 head needs shade and fixture clearance

LEDERA A21 Daylight, 150-Watt Equivalent: what owners report

Owner themes on the product listing page centre on very bright garage and workshop coverage, with owners noting a single bulb changed a dim bay into a usable workspace. The recurring watch-out matches the colour: bedroom fits feel harsh. No individual review is quoted and no rating figure is printed.

LEDERA A21 Daylight, 150-Watt Equivalent: who should not buy

If the room is a bedroom or a dining room, do not buy this bulb: its daylight will fight the room. Buy the TCP soft-white pack below for warm rooms, or see our portable work lights guide for movable task light instead.

LEDERA A21 Daylight, 150-Watt Equivalent: pair it with

Pair it with an open fixture or a large shade that lets heat escape, and keep a spare: workshops are where bulbs get knocked. For bench task lighting, see our work lights guide.

Best value multi-pack: TCP A19 Soft White, 60-Watt Equivalent, 6-Pack

Best value multi-pack

Why the TCP A19 Soft White, 60-Watt Equivalent, 6-Pack is our pick

The TCP A19 Soft White 6-pack is the stock-up pick because it solves the boring problem well: six rooms, one purchase, no return trip when a bulb burns out. Each bulb is a soft-white 2700 K A19 on a true E26 base, listed at 8.5 watts with a 60-watt equivalence and a CRI of 80, and the listing puts rated life at 20,000 hours. TCP describes its A-lamps as replacements for incandescent, halogen or CFL bulbs. Its title rounds wattage to 9 watts while its field says 8.5 watts; both are printed here. Warm colour and non-dimmable operation are its limits.

TCP A19 Soft White, 60-Watt Equivalent, 6-Pack key specs

  • Base: E26 medium screw base
  • Shape: A19 general-purpose
  • Listed watts: 8.5 W (title rounds to 9 W)
  • Colour temperature: 2700 K soft white
  • Equivalent: 60-watt bulb
  • CRI: 80
  • Dimmable: No
  • Rated life: 20,000 hours (listing figure)
  • Pack: 6-pack listing
  • Brand: TCP Lighting
  • Replacement class: incandescent, halogen or CFL per listing
  • Lumens: not published in listing fields

TCP A19 Soft White, 60-Watt Equivalent, 6-Pack: fits and best for

Living rooms, bedrooms, hallways and dining areas with E26 sockets on plain switches, especially houses where several rooms need the same warm bulb. Best for landlords, large homes and anyone who wants spares in the cupboard rather than a single-bulb emergency purchase. Not for workshops or dimmer circuits. If one room needs daylight, buy that room a daylight bulb separately.

TCP A19 Soft White, 60-Watt Equivalent, 6-Pack pros and watch-outs

  • Six bulbs in one purchase covers several rooms
  • Warm 2700 K suits living areas and bedrooms
  • True E26 base fits standard fixtures
  • 20,000-hour rated life per listing
  • Spares on hand end dark-room waits
  • Non-dimmable: no dimming on dimmer circuits
  • Warm colour looks dim in large daylight rooms
  • Lumen figure not published in listing fields
  • Title and wattage field disagree slightly (9 W vs 8.5 W)

TCP A19 Soft White, 60-Watt Equivalent, 6-Pack: what owners report

Owner themes on the product listing page centre on good soft-white colour for living areas in multi-packs, with owners noting the convenience of having spares ready. The recurring watch-out matches the colour: large rooms feel dimmer in warm light. No individual review is quoted and no rating figure is printed.

TCP A19 Soft White, 60-Watt Equivalent, 6-Pack: who should not buy

If the job is a workshop or a security spot, do not buy this warm multi-pack: it is the wrong colour and the wrong brightness class. Buy the LEDERA A21 for workshops or the Philips PAR38 for spots, or see our LED light bars guide for outdoor area lighting.

TCP A19 Soft White, 60-Watt Equivalent, 6-Pack: pair it with

Editorial judgement, not test results: the awards above weigh base fit, shape match, published lumen figures and honest gaps in the listings. A bulb with an unpublished figure was not penalised for the gap alone, but it was not credited with a figure it never published either.

Installation & wiring basics

Switch the power off at the switch before touching any bulb, and let a hot halogen cool completely — halogen bulbs run far hotter than the LED replacing them, and a burn from the old bulb is the commonest injury in this swap. Unscrew the old bulb, read its base marking, and confirm it says E26 before opening the new box. Screw the LED in firmly but without force: cross-threading a screw base damages the socket, and a bulb that wobbles is a bulb that will flicker. For cans, check the face sits flush; for outdoor fixtures, check the fixture itself is weather-rated. On a dimmer circuit, fit only a bulb listed as dimmable, then test the full dimming range the same day, while a return is still simple. If a bulb buzzes, flickers or refuses to dim, the dimmer is the first suspect, not the bulb. For the same test-first habit on vehicle lighting, see our replacement mirrors for Jeep JK guide and our off-road light bars for beginners guide.

Safety essentials

  • Switch power off before fitting or removing any bulb, and let halogen bulbs cool first.
  • Never force a bulb into a socket with the wrong base: E26 only in E26 sockets.
  • Respect enclosed-fixture warnings on the listing: trapped heat shortens LED life.
  • Use dimmable bulbs only on dimmer circuits, and test the full range on day one.
  • Check fixture wattage ratings and shade clearance, especially for high-output A21 bulbs.
  • Dispose of broken halogen bulbs carefully and keep LED spares boxed and upright.

No accessory buttons are printed in this section: the verified accessory pool for this site covers winch recovery gear, which has no place in a bulb guide, and no bulb accessory ASIN was verified in this post research. Buy dimmer switches or outdoor fixtures to your fixture maker specification.

Troubleshooting

Symptom Likely cause Fix
Bulb flickers Non-dimmable bulb on a dimmer Move it to a plain switch or fit a dimmable bulb
Bulb will not dim Dimmer not compatible with that LED Check dimmer compatibility list; change dimmer or bulb
Bulb will not screw in Wrong base for the socket Confirm E26 marking; do not force it
3-way bulb shows one level Socket is not a true 3-way socket Fit it in a 3-way lamp; a dimmer is not a substitute
Room feels dim after swap Warm colour or fewer lumens than expected Compare lumens, not watts; add a second fixture
Bulb fails early in a can Heat trapped in an enclosed fixture Use an open fixture or a bulb rated for enclosed use

Who should NOT buy these

Drivers looking for headlight bulbs should not buy these. Every bulb here is a 120 V screw-base household bulb, not an automotive headlight bulb. Headlight housings take H-series bases with their own optics and legality rules, covered in our energy-efficiency bulb guide, and fitting a household bulb there is not possible or legal.

Owners of candelabra fixtures should not buy these. Chandeliers and small sconces usually take the smaller E12 base, and an E26 bulb will not fit them however similar it looks. Measure the socket first, and buy the E12 size for those fixtures instead of forcing this guide.

Anyone whose only circuit is a dimmer should not buy the non-dimmable picks. Three of the six bulbs here do not dim, and fitting them on a dimmer buys flicker, not light. Choose the dimmable SYLVANIA BR30 or Philips PAR38, or change the switch to a plain switch first.

Buyers who need a single bulb to light a whole yard should not buy a spot. The PAR38 beam is deliberately narrow; whole-yard coverage needs several fixtures or a wide flood, not one brighter spot. See our LED light bars guide for wide-area lighting thinking.

FAQ

What does medium base mean on a light bulb?

Medium base means an E26 Edison screw base, 26 mm across, the standard screw base in North America. The letter E stands for Edison, and the number is the base diameter in millimetres. If your old bulb says E26, or measures about 26 mm across the threads, these bulbs fit. E12 is the smaller candelabra base and will not fit.

Can an LED bulb really replace a halogen bulb?

Yes, where base, voltage and fixture match: an E26 LED screws into the same E26 socket a halogen or incandescent bulb used, and the LED produces similar or greater light on far fewer watts. Trust lumens, not watts, and the fixture warnings still apply.

How do I know if my fixture takes E26?

Read the marking on the old bulb, its packaging, or the fixture itself, where E26 is usually printed near the socket. If no marking survives, measure across the threads: about 26 mm is E26, 12 mm is E12, 17 mm is E17. When in doubt, photograph the base marking before ordering.

Is a 60-watt-equivalent LED as bright as a 60-watt halogen?

Equivalence claims are marketing shorthand, not measurements, so compare lumens instead. A 60-watt halogen typically produces roughly 800 lumens, and the Philips A19 here lists 800 lumens. A bulb with no published lumen figure cannot be checked the same way.

Why does my new LED bulb flicker on a dimmer?

The commonest cause is a non-dimmable bulb on a dimmer circuit: it was never designed to dim, so it flickers, buzzes or stays at full brightness. The fix is a dimmable bulb on a compatible dimmer, tested on day one. Test the bulb on a plain switch first to rule out a loose socket.

Can I use these bulbs outdoors?

Some of them, in the right fixture: the SYLVANIA BR30 lists indoor and outdoor use, and the Philips PAR38 suits outdoor flood and security fixtures. The fixture, not the bulb, must carry the weather rating.

What is the difference between 2700 K and 5000 K?

Colour temperature describes the light colour: 2700 K is warm soft white, the colour of a traditional living-room bulb, while 5000 K is daylight, a cooler white that suits workshops, kitchens and security lighting. Brightness is lumens, not temperature, so choose per room and keep each room consistent.

Do LED bulbs work in enclosed fixtures?

Only where the listing says so. Enclosed fixtures trap heat, and heat shortens LED life even though LEDs run cooler than halogens. If your fixture is fully enclosed, choose a bulb explicitly rated for it.

How long do these LED bulbs last compared with halogen?

On maker and listing figures, halogen bulbs last roughly 2,000 to 3,000 hours, while the LED picks here list 10,950 to 50,000 hours depending on the bulb and the maker’s test basis. Those bases differ, so treat a long rated life as maker confidence, not a guaranteed calendar life.
